Duhawks win!!

With a score of 39-17. Maurice Young led the defense with 3 interceptions on the day.

What a great start of the season. I was screaming at my computer from here in Colorado.

Go Duhawks!

Loras seemed to look promising against Concordia. It was only two quarters, but they ended up winning 13-10. Coach H is a great coach and I am excited for what is to come in his first season.

Their first game is this Saturday against Elmhurst.

Here is the article from the scrimmage: http://duhawks.com/news/2014/8/31/FB_0831140314.aspx?path=football

GO DUHAWKS!

I wish duhawkin would come back to fill us in on the coaching situation at Loras.

There was a Dubuque Telegraph-Herald article recently announcing the start of a new pledge drive at Loras.  Saying it was crucial to raise the endowment at Loras because the current average pay for professors there is $20k less than the average in the region.  I wonder if that also included coaching pay?

I have also heard that the Loras pipeline to the Chicago area Catholic leagues has dwindled due to some Chicago area Catholic colleges adding football over the last decade or so.  St. Xavier and St. Francis in the NAIA are the ones I can think of.

All of that might have worked against coach Mierk, from the 20 years he had been away from the Loras campus.

Mierk was forced to sign his resignation and did not want to leave. I would say the timing was terrible due to it happening the day before the game and Mierk being the offensive play caller.

My thought is that retention and record was the key to this move happening.

Why couldn't it wait until the end of the season?  Were recruits not visiting campus?

It was a shock to most close to the program. There are still recruits visiting, there may be some more information out as time goes on.

From the Dubuque Telegraph-Herald...

Loras' Nate Carrier named athlete of the week.

From the article...

Loras College running back Nate Carrier was named the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's male athlete of the week.

Carrier, a sophomore from Shullsburg, Wis., had 38 carries for 263 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Duhawks to a 44-33 win at Rockford University.

Carrier's rushing total is the highest for an Iowa Conference back in a single game since Luther's Tyler Sherden ran for 297 yards and five scores in a 47-41, double-over time win over Simpson on Nov. 3, 2007.

Loras placekicker Louie Oswald also was recognized for his performance Saturday. Oswald, a senior who prepped at Dubuque Wahlert, connected on field goals of 21, 30 and 26 yards and made five extra points.

Louis Oswald was named special teams player of the week. Things looking up for the Duhawks

Game day in the IIAC.  From the Dubuque Telegraph-Herald...

From the article...

Outlook: The Duhawks went 2-8 in 2012 but open the season expecting success and hope to rely a little less on sophomore running back Nate Carrier, who led the Iowa Conference in rushing a year ago with 1,210 yards, but who played sparingly in last year's opener against Elmhurst. Balance would be a positive for the Duhawks.

Elmhurst is coming off its best season in school history at 10-2 and won a share of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin for the first time since 1980 and became the first Elmhurst team to qualify for the NCAA Playoffs, where they defeated Coe College in the first round. The Bluejays, however, must replace seven starters on offense and six on defense in Joe Adams first season as head coach.

What are your guys thoughts on today's game?

Well that's encouraging, for both Loras and Dubuque.  Of course last year, Dubuque beat Oshkosh 21-14 over a half of play and that didn't necessarily translate into the season.

Very true. But it was nice to see the offense making some big time plays. Hopefully they can build on this to get ready for Elmhurst next Thursday.

I haven't heard any news of the Loras/Luther/Dubuque scrimmages against the WIAC teams from yesterday, but I did find a picture of the indoor practice facility going up at UD.

You can see the elevator shaft of the suite style dorm being built behind the indoor practice facility

Loras played a quarter of football against La Crosse, and won 21 to 6
