Has anyone seen or heard from Rick, aka the (former) mayor of McMinnville? He used to sit at the top of section A for all the Linfield home games, but I haven't seen him this year.

Looking at Linfield in the first round of the playoffs for the 20 years from 2000 through 2019

  • missed the playoffs: 5x
  • first round bye: 3x
  • played a "new" team: 5x
  • played a rematch: 7x

The only team we've played in the first round that was neither SCIAC nor NWC is Hardin-Simmons (2016 and 2017).
The only really surprising thing I found was that we hadn't played a rematch since 2015.

General football / Re: Question on NCAA rule

I don't know if this is still the case, but a decade or two ago I remember seeing Linfield punt, and the returner called for a fair catch after a nice high bounce. He was hit almost immediately after he caught the ball, but a flag was thrown for calling for the fair catch after the bounce (unsportsmanlike conduct, IIRC). I felt a bit sorry for the guy -- called for a fair catch, but then got hit almost immediately and also penalized 15 yards.

If I remember correctly, this the first time Linfield has lost in the first round of the NCAA playoffs. Next year we go all the way (can only do that in even numbered years).

General football / Re: 2019 Pool C

How much of Redland's pool-C case depends upon Linfield winning out (assuming Redlands does win out)? Right now Redlands has a very strong SoS and is 1-1 against RRO, but their RRO will weaken over the next two weeks, and if (God forbid) Linfield were not to win out, then they would fall out of the regional rankings, leaving Redlands 0-1 against RRO. Obviously their case for pool-C would weaken, but would this prove fatal to their pool-C hopes?

All 61 of Brett's TD passes in 2004: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwxHhcCW_78
I remember that first TD against Oxy. It was the first offensive play of the game by Linfield, and we started every game with a run play (everyone knew we could pass, so we wanted to prove we could run too). I looked down and saw that expanse of open space (all 11 defenders were within 5 yards of the line) and thought that we should throw it deep. He did and the rest was history.

In all this discussion about women playing on men's sports team we're missing a milestone: in a few days is the 20th anniversary of the first points scored by a women in a college football game.
On Oct 18th 1997, Liz Heaston kicked a couple of PATs for Willamette (against Linfield), and this was when Willamette was good.

If I've counted correctly, a win by Linfield will give the 'Cats 40 straight wins over the Pios.
The last win by L&C was in 1973 (by 4-7!); the teams did not meet between 1987 and 1990, nor in 2005, although they met twice in 1991.

Yesterday the NWC teams gave up a total of 0 points (i.e., no one scored against any of the teams in the NWC). When was the last time that happened in the regular season?
On a related note, when was the last time only one NWC team played during a regular season weekend?

I don't think either Linfield or UMHB had a snap in the red zone. All three UMHB TDs were long plays, and none of the field goal attempts were less than 40 yards.
I thought the first half was fairly even (aside from one huge play by UMHB); the second half less so.

What really impressed me in the first half (I watched the streaming video) was the inability of Linfield's D to get off the field / UMHB's ability to convert on 3rd and long. Looking at the stats, UMHB went 7 of 10 on 3rd down in the 1st half, including 5 of 7 on 3 and 9 or longer (and only had one 3rd down of 5 or fewer yards). The D did an incredible job in the 3 quarter though.

Taking a quick look through the record book, it seems to be the worst loss since 8 - 52 beating by Texas Lutheran in 1974, and the most points we've given up in school history. Far too many mistakes were made today, but the bulk of the season is still ahead with lots of time to make adjustments and improvements. We're still undefeated against UMHB in the post-season, and they're undefeated against us in the regular season; which would you rather be?

I see that Whitworth lost in OT when Central ran in a 2-pt conversion. Let me guess, Central tried for a kick, it went bad (kicker slipped?), but somehow they were still able to run it in for the score.

My computer hangs for a few minutes, and I too missed the TD. Seems the 'Cats are doing better when I'm not watching.

Last weeks the gurus were a net +3 for Linfield (+3, +1, -1), so Linfield, in a show of fairness and sportsmanship, let MHB score the first three TDs.
This week the gurus are a net +18 for St. Thomas (+7, +7, +4), so will the Tommies let Linfield score the first 18 TDs? It seems only fair and sporting that they should.
