A great season for a great team.  The three didn't fall tonight.
MACON- You asked for my "turn" on tonites game and here it is. We got BEAT.... By a better team tonite! We picked the wrong time to have an off game! They did to us what we usually do to other teams, plain and simple. We made stupid mistakes.... Threw the ball away and gave them easy baskets.... At LEAST 6..... and they flat out shot the lights out- they shot 55% and we shot 38% and we only went to the line 4 times.... They went 17-21..... I've got to hand it to them.... They took every run we had at them and came right back and stuck it to us. The officiating wasn't very good but that's not what beat us..... WE BEAT US! They took it to the hole consistently and dished off when we cut them off and made us pay! Will Coble was 1-10 from 3 pt range I think and nobody else was much better. The crowd had very few opportunities to even get in it they beat us so bad.... In all aspects of the game .... All in all, a bad time to have a bad game! Great season and great run for our guys but I can't help but wonder what happened.... And WHY??? But good teams force you to look bad too! If they play this way the rest of the tournament they will WIN IT ALL! .... But I can't see anyone shooting like that consistently the rest of the way! Congrats to Oswego St.... They took it to us in our house and beat us at our own game.... There's just no other way to say it.... Congrats to them!

Classy post, '82...CNU was fortunate to pull out a one point, come from behind victory against Farmingdale State in the first round...just goes to show how unexpected tournament games can be.

Great game from CNU...may very well have to play Tufts on their home court for the right to go to the final four...keep it going, and good luck, ladies!

Talk about a tough break for Anaya Simmons and CNU...hoping the team can step up and play inspired basketball.  It goes w/out saying that the games only get tougher the deeper you go in the tournament, and tonight will be no exception...any team that beats Hope on their home floor is really, really good, so it will be tough sleddin'...one game at a time!

GO LADY CAPS!

I never got down to Ratcliffe, no.

Who was the kid who hit the halfcourt shot at the halftime buzzer in this game? Julian something? Or am I making that up?

Hmm...I don't remember a shot like that in this game, but CNU did have a player named Julian Sumpter.

CNU's hosting a sectional for the second time ever...even though the first time was 20+ years ago, I remember it well.  The Captains squeaked by St. John's the first night, then lost a heartbreaker in OT to William Paterson and Horace Jenkins.  CNU was leading by six w/approximately a minute to go in regulation, but I guess it wasn't meant to be...would have been the late CJ Woollum's first and, as it turned out, only final four...hoping CNU can take advantage this time around!

GO CAPS!

Man -- brought back memories right there.

My story that night.

William Paterson 86, Christopher Newport 75 (OT)

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — It's called senior leadership.

"When you have guys who have been together for three years, like this group has," said William Paterson head coach Jose Rebimbas, "a lot of time you listen to what they have to say. The last five minutes of the game we asked them, 'What is it that we have to do to win this game?' As always, Horace Jenkins said 'Give me the ball.' It's been a pretty good play for us so far."

The senior guard finished with a game-high 35 points, but it was three of his game-high eight assists that sparked a game-saving rally for Paterson (24-4). Traiiing 62-56 with one minute left, Jenkins found senior forward Ray Ortiz in the corner for a three-pointer that cut the lead to 62-59, then after Jenkins missed a jumper, he hit Rashaan Barner for a dunk to cut the lead to 63-61.

Christopher Newport's Terry Gray and Jenkins exchanged a pair of free throws, then after a Captains turnover, Jenkins found Chris Lauer on an inbounds pass for his only bucket of the night, which tied the game at 65-65.

Carlos Heard missed a layup with 2.4 seconds left for Christopher Newport (25-4) and a Jenkins three from 26 feet out hit off the rim as time expired.

William Paterson outscored Christopher Newport 21-10 in the extra period, behind 5-for-6 shooting from the floor and 9-for-13 shooting from the foul line.

"I was just looking at it as my last minute of basketball," said Jenkins, "with all three seniors. So we just wanted to go out there and leave everything on the court."

The Captains themselves had rallied from a 36-26 deficit late in the first half and as many as nine points, 49-40, with 11:07 to play. CNU then went on an 18-3 run to push in front, 58-52 with 2:41 to play. They maintained that lead to 62-56 before Paterson's final rally.

Christopher Newport was led by Jermaine Woods' 20 points, including 5-for-11 from three-point range. Heard and Gray each finished with 13, while Antoine Sinclair fouled out with 11 points on 4-for-13 shooting.

I thought you were there, Pat...one of the biggest crowds in Freeman Center history, if not the biggest...did you ever catch a game in Ratcliffe?

A pretty nice run for the CNU seniors. Even dealing with COVID, their careers included a Sweet 16 (COVID stopped that season), a final 4 and an Elite 8. a crazy time indeed!

Come on, CNU85, it was better than that...comparatively, how many college basketball players can say they got to the Sweet 16, much less an Elite 8 and Final 4?

CNU flew into Boston today on CNU's dime.

Does that really make sense?  I mean, if you're getting to the airport an hour before the flight, its an hour in the air, and then two hours by bus out to Amherst.  Are you really saving much time over an 8 hour bus ride?  Door to door the flying trip is maybe 5-6 hours, at best?  If there's a direct flight.

Perhaps CNU didn't want the NCAA involved w/them getting there?

What if Keene State doesn't win the Swarthmore pod?  Don't the Garnet stand a better chance of beating them on their home floor than not?

I think Keene is the only scenario where Marietta wouldn't host. I don't have much faith in Keene winning two games.  I do think they match up well with Swat, though. If they can rebound well, i think they can keep it close enough to be dangerous at the end.

Nice call, Ryan!

As a CNU fan, I appreciate your comments, Augie2020...unfortunately, this is nothing new, so I'm disappointed, but not shocked.  It really boils down to the kids getting the shaft...anyone that wants to mention that D3 makes up a tiny percentage of the overall revenue, please save your breath, or keystrokes, 'cause that "shouldn't" matter...that's like a high school AD telling the tennis team that all they can get are tennis balls for the season, simply because the football team brought in the majority of the money.  What about uniforms, travel, equipment, etcetera?  It "shouldn't" happen, plain and simple...whoever wins this sectional will have earned it, but I'm hoping the basketball Gods will be paying particular attention to CNU.

for sweet 16, playing at home give CNU big edge.
CNU last home loss, 12/1/2018 by Messiah.  The only home loss these seniors have ever known.
They love the home rims and shooting lines.  just a very different team at home compared to away/neutral.

Got to win on Friday and Saturday first...Friday's game is probably the closest thing to a guaranteed win that you'll get in the tournament, but playing JH on their home floor will be a different story.  The men hosted the sectional once, but the women haven't...frankly, they're deserving, as the majority of Broderick's tournament wins have been on the road...HUGE opportunity!

And it won't have anything to do with the status of the CNU men; the women have priority on the 2nd weekend.

Thanks, ronk, I actually read where the women have priority the second weekend after I had commented....
