That just really boring. 30 practices and a month and a half before playing your first game? Wow!

Yes, when you state it that way it does seem like it can get stale.

Injury potential is an interesting point across all sports I think. Not sure what the true cause is but the apparent increase in them across all siports is alarming. Especially with the focus on nutrition, weight training, etc that is the norm in this era.

Pat,

Very much looking forward to discussing Roanoke, the ODAC and D3 bball in general.

That's not really in the spirit of Division III. Similarly, NAIA schools start earlier and they even start playing games on Nov. 1. If you play an NAIA team in the early season, you get what you get -- your team against a team that has played four or five more games.

Division III's rules are set up to emphasize Division III vs. Division III games and that's really the way it should be.

Thanks for the response. I get that the standard should be D3 to D3. That makes sense. Just offering another viewpoint. I'll have to brush up on this more it looks like. I will probably throw all kinds of "crazy" ideas/thoughts out there. Just slap them down when they are too out there! ;D

Interesting...

Seems like if you were playing a D1 in an early season "exhibition" game you should at least be able to match their start date. At the very least have that as an option.

One could argue that further minimizes the slim opportunity to get an "upset of the century" type of situation going on.

pat,

Thanks. Shoulda come back and corrected after I saw the announcement. My kid said it was described to them as a "scrimmage" initially. I asked was it a game (now I know the vernacular to be exhibition when it is the D3 vs D1), and he wasn't sure. Had to razz him a bit when I saw the announcement come through his weekend.

In any event great opportunity for the kids to play in what hopefully should be a pretty good environment. It being played during their homecoming weekend, I hope that they should get relatively good attendance. Especially that it tips off the Winthrop season as well.

Thank Pat for explanation of exhibition versus scrimmages. Pretty sure its a true scrimmage against Winthrop.

Tigerfan,

Teams are doing drills I would assume, even without coaches. I'd think you could see things like who looks to be in shape, how the frosh are looking, any observed weaknesses a player seems to have improved in.

I probably couldn't tell how good (or bad) a team is based off of watching them workout, but I'd be willing to bet you can get some "info". especially if you are someone who observes the program year over year. Just my thoughts anyway.

Yet another question-
Do all of the ODAC teams broadcast games over web? Looks like Roanoke does all home games, and may be able to catch some away, but I'd doubt they do all games.

Getting ramped up for basketball season!

Wondering if anyone has observations available from the open gyms that are going on at each campus?

Trying to piece the scheduling together for the Maroons has been fun (gives me something to do as waiting for the high school season to get underway with my other son as I'm watching soccer matches I guess.). From what I can see the ODAC is not a home and home league? I'm assuming this is due to number of games played? Also, is there a particular formula used for determining who plays each team 2x versus once? I assume stronger teams play each other home and home, but I haven't figured it out yet.

Final question, typically when the D3 schools play D1 schools in "scrimmages" are these traditional scrimmages like in HS, or are they games, but they don't count for SOS reasons? Typically open to the public?

Thx in advance.

Good point hasanova...

Basically at what point does he have to take "ultimate responsibility"?

Potentially blowing opportunity is correct. Getting ready to send my son to Roanoke, and though no athletic scholarship (obviously) have had discussions on not embarrassing (self, family, school, program) and making sure to excel in all facets. If he decides to go down another path, don't point any fingers. He has been prepared for such a time as this.....

Not a UNC fan, so outside of just seeing a kid wasting opportunity I have no significant interest here. I do hope he gets it right. Seems like there are enough active alumni with that program that even if he isn't buying what is being sold by coaches, some of them would be pulling his shirt tail.

Agreed. I honestly do get youthful indiscretions. Try not to be too prudish.

When I see stuff like this though I just shake my head and wonder, who has these kids ear and what is the thought process that seems to be missing from them to allow for this stuff?  ???

"Parents Just Don't Understand" I guess....

Thanks much Pat.

Looking forward to following on the boards.

Any ideas on when the schedules are usually posted for the upcoming season? Primarily concerned with Roanoke obviously, but would like to track the entire ODAC where possible.

Thanks for the well wishes HSCDad.

Hopefully fortunes will turn for the Maroons.

My son's eight grade year, the HS varsity won first 2 games of year and that was it (2-22 finish). His freshman year they lost every game until the last one (1-21), he was probably their 6th or 7th man, depending on matchups. Core group of kids busted their tails and had success their last two seasons. Senior year they took silver in Districts, and made first round of states, taking a Philly Charter school to last possession before going down. That group left their mark on turning the program around.

Hoping for similar success at Roanoke (just hope it doesn't take until he is a senior!!).

Yes, we are very much looking forward to it.

In all honesty, when we went through his look at schools this past summer, he really liked the atmosphere, and academics at Roanoke. Washington and Lee was the other ODAC school he was interested in. My family is originally from western part of VA (Waynesboro/Afton area of VA), and it is within 4-4.5 hours from our current home so I think it lined up for him. Once he started studying up on the level of play in the ODAC, he was pretty much sold on Roanoke.

Amazed how far things have come with being able to watch these games over the internet. He watched  much of the last half of season of Roanoke to see other teams as well as how he could fit in. A definite advantage. We were intending to come down to ODAC tournament, but his team made a run in districts/states and that took precedence (they won silver medals in district, so commitment definitely paid off).

Years definitely fly by, so hopefully we won't take this time for granted. Seems like just yesterday he was starting HS.

For those of you that have had an opportunity to see both teams that are playing for the National title, which one should win ?

First time poster (long time reader here). I am going with MHB. Was very impressed with Amherst, but I like the grittiness that Baylor displayed. When they were only down a possession or two going into the 2nd half Saturday, we thought they would pull out victory. Regardless of who wins, it should be a fantastic game. Have to make sure to set the DVR.

We were first timers in Salem this year. An enjoyable experience. We didn't know much about the teams, but since oldest son will be a Maroon next season, wanted to experience it.

Looking forward to an enjoyable four years and some quality basketball in the ODAC. Exciting times.
