Question for Hope fans.  Hope has a no play sports on Sunday policy and I heard they are really strict on it.  The NCAA Championship game is in a Sunday, will hope waive that rule if their made it to the game?  I have heard they have always said they wouldn't.  Would be a wierd situation if happened.

Quote from: 84SJU on November 25, 2024, 01:22:33 PMGary was the linebackers coach the last time the Johnnies played LaCrosse in the playoffs. The weather and field conditions in LaCross were terrible, but the Johnnies managed to hold a 30-8 lead in the 3rd quarter. LaCrosse then scored 29 unanswered points to win 37-30. Ouch!
I was at that game with my fiancĂ©(now wife).  I remember UW-L also not having concessions and most bathrooms open

Backes needs to play better.

Just glad we are on the opposite side of North Central, they are going to be extremely tough for anyone to beat and possibly even stay close with.

Stats are finally updated so here's the case for Carleton safety Travis Brown as MVP:

Defensive contributions
3rd in MIAC in tackles as a safety (81; 1st had 86)
4th in MIAC in PBUs (8, 1st had 10)
5th in MIAC in INTs (3, 1st had 6)
4.5 TFLs
1 FR
1 Defensive TD

Now onto his special teams resume
1st in KR average 22.0
1st in PR average 11.6
1st in returns for TDs with 1 (only one other eligible returner had a TD)
16th in all purpose yards (76.9 YPG) as a defensive player. Trost by comparison was 11th with 87.6 YPG, Kidder was 6th with 99.4 YPG

He was also one of the better punters in the conference
34 punts, average of 38.1 yards per punt, 5 fair caught, 10 downed inside the 20.
By comparison St. Olaf averaged 41.0 per punt, Bethel 39.4, and St. John's 39.0.
By individual punter statistics he would rank 2nd in the MIAC with his average, just behind the Ole

Finally, just for fun he also had 29 rushing yards and 35 receiving yards.

Statistically he's the best DB in the MIAC (followed by maybe Farm from Bethel?), he's the best returner in the MIAC, and he's also one of the better punters in the MIAC. Captain, leader of the Carleton defense that was its strength this year in the most winning season they've had since 2008. I'm not saying he's more talented than Trost/Kidder/Roste/Alston, but if you're asking who is truly the Most Valuable Player, then based off of the numbers he put up all over the field, he at least deserves to be in the conversation.

And he might not start for Johnnies or Royals

I read just now that UST is dropping men's and women's tennis at the end of the semester. Nice for them to find out right as the women's team goes off to the NCAA tournament.

That news will either give both squads a downer or give them more incentive to give their best, seeing it'll be each team's last shot at a title.

According to Charley Walters of the Pioneer Press U$T needs half a billion dollars for facilities. Could someone please tell me where they're going to build them?

Insiders say it will cost $500 million for the University of St. Thomas to provide facilities for its move from NCAA Division III to Division I. The school has begun a $225 million athletics capital fundraising campaign and has targeted 15 benefactors, 11 of whom have pledged $1 million apiece.

Meanwhile, St. Thomas will have a partnership with Learfield IMG College that will oversee multimedia rights, ticket sales, licensing and sponsorships.

Have a feeling UST doesn't have as deep of pockets as they think.  D1 sports is expensive.  All of the women's programs lose money and the football program will not make money even if they move to scholarship level which is even more expensive.  I of M makes money because of BIG network.  uST will never have something like that.

Learfield handles 90% of the schools in D1.  Basically a way to make the athletic department leaner.

I still think football becomes irrelevant unless they start doing scholarships.  Pioneer league is basicallly D3 but the players can tell their friends they are D1.

Question on basketball.  How many of their current players can play at that level?

How does this also change life for coaches?  The pressure to win is different at that level.  If someone like Tauer who is a lifer has four bad years, do they start looking elsewhere?

I think hockey will be the easiest transition as the players at decent D3 schools have all played high level juniors and tan at least give D1 teams a competitive game.

Depends on your definition of "irrelevant."
The experts around here suggest that UST can step into the Pioneer League and go .500 pretty quickly. Competing for a league title there before long isn't out of the question. San Diego has won a game in the FCS playoffs a few times recently, but I don't think there is any chance a non-scholarship Pioneer League team is going to be any kind of national power. I think either the aim for football (nationally relevant, competing for a championship) changes OR the Pioneer League is a stepping stone towards a future application to the Mo Valley conference, where we'll get pounded on for a bit before hopefully being competitive.

It takes a long time and a lot of money to take the next step with football.  The biggest worry is how many meh seasons does it take to shrink an already small fan base.  I think hockey and women's sports will be fine, the men's basketball and football will take time.

Welcome, St. Thomas!

If the Tommie fans head over there you will quadruple the number of players

The NCAA calendar says the final meeting only went until 4, so we should be hearing something shortly.

Is that Eastern or Central time?
5 eastern.  I suppose it's anybody's guess how long they delay the announcement.

Looks like they won't vote on a path until next year and if approved it would take 5 years to transition.

St. Olaf has a plan to return to campus this fall.  It looks like school is on break from Thanksgiving to J term.

So you're saying they're not planning on going deep into the playoffs this year?  :D

My son's college in North Carolina is ending fall semester November 19 and starting spring semester February 8.  Almost like another summer break, nearly three months.
