Do we have a regular season champion residing in Amherst, Massachusetts?

I'm not the NESCAC office, but Amherst has the best record among the five tied teams. Congrats to the LJs Mammoths on an amazing run to end the season.

(Mea culpa: it appears Bowdoin will be the #8 seed no matter what. Trinity-Tufts winner is #6, loser is #7. Bates is out. I erroneously believed Bowdoin had beaten Trinity when I posted this morning.)

So what happens if Amherst, Williams, and Wesleyan win and there are five teams at 7-3?

Probably also worth noting that Hamilton is the only team guaranteed a first-round home game:

  • Hamilton gets the #3 seed in the five-way tie scenario; if it finishes 7-3 but Midd beats Amherst, it would be the fourth seed. If the Continentals win, of course, they are the top seed.
  • Midd would finish fifth in the five-way tie scenario. All other scenarios have the Panthers at home next weekend.
  • Amherst--which would be the top seed in the five-way tie scenario--can finish as low as sixth with a loss to Midd, a Williams win over Hamilton, and a Tufts win over Trinity (Wes' result is irrelevant in this case; the Cards are guaranteed the #4 seed). Midd would be the top seed in this scenario.
  • Williams falls to #6 with wins by Hamilton, Midd, and Tufts. (Wes' result is again irrelevant--the Cards would be #3 no matter what--and Tufts would end up at #4.)
  • Wes finishes fifth with a loss and wins by Hamilton and Amherst. (If Wes loses but Hamilton and Midd win, Wes would be the #3 seed.)
Should be an interesting day, no?

So what happens if Amherst, Williams, and Wesleyan win and there are five teams at 7-3?

Long story short, Amherst would be the top seed. Its only loss against the rest of the top five would be against Wesleyan; every other tied team would have at least two losses against the others (Wes lost to Hamilton and Williams; Williams lost to Amherst and Midd; Hamilton lost to Amherst and--in this scenario--Williams, and Midd lost to Wes, Hamilton, and--in this scenario--Amherst).

If five teams tie at 7-3, I believe the standings would be:

1. Amherst (3-1 vs. tied teams)
2. Williams (2-1 vs. remaining tied teams; beat Hamilton head-to-head)
3. Hamilton (2-1 vs. remaining tied teams; lost to Williams head-to-head)
4. Wesleyan (beat Midd head-to-head)
5. Midd (lost to Wes head-to-head)
6. Tufts/Trinity winner
7. Bowdoin (if Tufts beats Trin) or Tufts (if Trin beats Tufts)
8. Bates (if Tufts beats Trin) or Bowdoin (if Trin beats Tufts)
9. Trinity (if Tufts wins) or Bates (if Trin wins)
10. Colby/Conn winner
11. Colby/Conn loser

Regardless of other results, if Amherst and Williams both win, Amherst is the top seed; if Amherst wins but Williams loses, Hamilton is the top seed. Irony, thy name is "NESCAC final weekend."

Wesleyan has a hard time with Middlebury: tonight's loss is the 14th in a row, their last win was in 2005. Two years ago when Wes won the NESCAC tourney, they lost to Midd by 37(!) at Midd (the Panthers didn't even qualify for the NESCAC playoffs). Wild, no?

That was actually Midd's 15th straight win over Wes, including three playoff games. Fun or depressing (depending on your loyalties) stat: This is now tied for Wes' second-longest losing streak ever against any NESCAC opponent in men's basketball (Williams also won 15 in a row from 1991-99). The longest is 16 in a row against Amherst, which won every meeting from the 2001-02 though 2007-08 seasons (including two in the NESCAC tournament).

This also got me thinking about how many NESCAC teams have reached a double-digit win streak against another conference team since conference play began:

Trinity: 17 in a row vs. Conn. College (2000-01 ~ present)
Amherst: 16 in a row vs. Wesleyan (2001-02 ~ 2007-08)
Williams: 16 in a row vs. Conn. College (2000-01 ~ present)
Amherst: 15 in a row vs. Conn. College (2002-03 ~ present)
Middlebury: 15 in a row vs. Wesleyan (2005-06 ~ present)
Amherst: 12 in a row vs. Bates (2000-01 ~ 2008-09)
Amherst: 11 in a row vs. Trinity (2007-08 ~ present)
Amherst: 11 in a row vs. Bowdoin (2000-01 ~ 2007-08)
Amherst: 10 in a row vs. Colby (2000-01 ~ 2007-08)
Williams: 10 in a row vs. Colby (2006-07 ~ present)

Honorable mention
Bowdoin: won 11 of its last 13 vs. Colby
Middlebury: won 10 of its last 11 vs. Bowdoin and Conn. College and nine of its last 10 vs. Tufts

And for good measure, all current NESCAC streaks through today's games:

Here is an interesting trivia question.  When was the last time Williams went winless in Little III competition in both football and men's basketball in the same academic year?  Could this have ever happened before?

You'd have to go all the way back to the 1915-16 academic year, just the second year of Little Three MBB competition:

http://wesleyan.edu/athletics/mbasketball/all-time-records/littlethree.html

The only other years in which Williams went 0-4 in men's basketball Little Three competition are 1936-37, 1937-38, and 1979-80; they were also technically winless in 1943-44, but Little Three competition that year consisted of a single Wes-Williams game in Middletown.

Fighting cards-
Are you the only NESCAC SID that participates on this board- you guys are doing a great job down there so no need for an in house shill.
You had a fine year, time to to shift over to Basketball and Hockey and let your fine 7-1 record stand.

Wait, the Wes SID spends time writing on fan message boards? That's embarrassing.

I worked for the Wes SID for five years and can fairly certainly say it's not him. Even in the unlikely event he knows these boards exist, I'd recognize his writing instantly, and this isn't his writing. File it under "Little Three title-induced 'booster' euphoria," perhaps...

Will the battle for bragging rights in Ct also get a record crowd?  If so, maybe commercial TV will broadcast the game annually.

CPTV, which broadcast the Williams-Wes game this past weekend, will also broadcast the Wes-Trinity game. Not sure if there will be a live stream on the internet as well--Wesleyan was supposed to simulcast the CPTV feed on Saturday but encountered technical difficulties, hence the rudimentary webcast that was clearly thrown together on exceptionally short notice. I don't believe there is a live stream available through the CPTV website.

Long-time reader, first-time poster. In the interest of full disclosure, I am a recent Wes alum and am as ecstatic as anyone to see the team's resurgence. However, I also don't want the elder statesmen of this board to think that the overzealous bandwagon types that have been popping up on the board this fall are representative of Wes fans as a whole. While I obviously can't speak for everyone, many of us recognize the facts: since the advent of NESCAC-only play in 1992...

  • Wes has a grand total of three wins against Amherst (2002--on a blocked kick--1993, and 1992).
  • Wes also has a total of three wins against Trinity (2000, 1998, and 1997). 1997 marked Wes' first win against Trinity since 1986.
  • Wes has beaten Williams just twice, both times at home (1999 and 1997). Prior to 1997, Wes last defeated Williams in 1985.
And then there's the small matter of the Cards' most recent Little Three title coming in 1970.

Do I (and others) think this Wes squad has the potential to be the best in years? Absolutely. Do I think they can make some noise against the "big three" this season? Yes, and I would even say that has become the expectation in year three of the Whalen era. I would love to see the Cards sitting pretty at 8-0 on the evening of November 9. But it's been over a decade since Wes has beaten one of the kingpins, and until the Redbirds show they can beat the big boys, instead of hanging with them but falling short at the end, it would be premature and unfair to move the Cards ahead of them in the league pecking order (no pun intended).

Is it Saturday yet?
