local radio (AM 810) is reporting that the RPI football coach has just been put on leave, Roger Wyland is on it, no comment from RPI Athletic Department.

It's now February.  Good timing once again.  Maybe they'll make a decent choice this year and they won't take 4 months to do it.

Details?

Actually, it looks like they named OC Guido Falbo head coach.  Interesting stuff.

Gro's 2 cents in the southern living debate... Wilmington NC or Charleston SC.  Wilmington is definitely kickass as LD11 put it. Real cool town, lots of stuff, and the beach. Gro's never been the Charleston but everyone raves about it. Never been to Savannah either but it seems to be the Baltimore of the south (minus The Wire). Lots of industry and other smelly stuff.

Choose Wisely.

Sup Coach Landis, welcome to Troy. Stop by The Ruck and get some wings (and a wing burger). Now that that's out of the way, win dammit.

I'm not that concerned about who they choose as coach, it's all about how the program is going to be run going forward. In my opinion, it looks like Dr. Jackson and the new AD are looking to ramp up the athletics program to be world class while remaining in division III. That means building a world class facility (check). It also means playing a 10 game schedule, venturing out of region to play another proven program or get some name recognition outside of NY/MA, and expanding the recruiting base.

Now gro loves the Kinger, but he preferred a 9 game sked and day trips instead of overnights. Competitively he mixed it up in terms of strength of schedule, although I think the endicott series ran a few years longer than it should have. As far as recruiting goes, They did a good job there with the resources given to them. I think the money is going to increase going forward (just make sure you hire a compliance officer so the new coach understands the D3 regs)

So it is sad to see the man who headed RPI's turnaround from 100 year doormat to playoff participant go, but I think the new coach - under the guidance of the AD and Prez (who as Frank said are really pulling the strings) - Has this great opportunity in front of him and I hope he can capitalize on it. He also has the right to bring in his own coaching staff. Again, it will be sad to see some great assistant coaches will not be back, but that's football. Some of them could be back, it takes a special person to work in the Troylet.

For what its worth... RPI will be playing Castleton State next season (and Alfred, so they have that going for them).

RPI coaching search down to about 10 candidates with 4 favorites. Gro does not know any names, but thinks Molly McGrath is in the mix.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn.... what the dilly LLPP? 'gro hopes RPI doesn't consider going D1 in all sports, the reasons have been posted already... no need to be just another NEC program when you can become the class of D3. That stadium is, as the kids say, dope. It would be nice if they could get it filled on game days (and nights). Getting half of the students interested would be a good start.

p.s. congrats Rev!

RPI dudes -

Headed to EMPAC in Troy this wknd to see an opera. Any good pre-show grub around there? Post-show bars?

Danke.

Best wings are at the Ruck which is downtown.  Kind of a dark dive bar, but great wings.  I'd actually recommend the wing-burger.  Huge burger with hot sauce and blue cheese.  Good stuff.  If you're staying up on the hill, down on 15th St. is the Notty Pine and O'Leary's.  Both dive-like.  Notty Pine is a bit more of a restaurant.  O'Leary is a bar but has really good wings too.

And you could always take a trip across the river to Gus's Hot Dogs.  i think it was built in like 1950 and has never been renovated and they have these tiny little hot dogs, but they are fantastic.

If you are looking for something a little more classy, try the Troy Pub and Brewery.  Also downtown.  Good beers, good food, ugly people.

Ruck wings are a must... so tasty

The troy pub now known as Brown's Brewing Co. is good for a sit down meal.

Don't forget, it's local custom to punch a troylet in the face after a night out.
