Messages - Hobart PBP

Right now, RPI is 3-1, Hobart 2-2 and Ithaca 1-2 vs .500 or better teams, so the Hobart-RPI-Ithaca three way tie scenario eliminates Ithaca and gives Hobart the bid via the win over RPI. Of course, which opponents are .500 or better could change over time.

And, of course, lurking over there in the corner are those pesky Dutch.

That was pretty horrid officiating.  Phantom PI's all over the place.  Also, the Hobart broadcasting crew might be the worst I have ever heard in all sports.
Why do you say that?

What not everyone may know about the go for it call on fourth and five at their own 38 is that they had the wind, but for reasons unknown at this point, led the third quarter end without taking a time out. That meant if they did punt, based on the rest of the game, they could have expected about a 25 yard punt instead of a 50-60 yarder that might have pinned RPI deep. This is just me talking, but I wonder if, in the decision process on whether to go, they didn't notice the clock running out, and then, once it did, that made the decision for them? If you punt, RPI's getting it around their 40 with the lead and the wind.

The two point decision I don't think was remotely questionable. They've missed five extra points this year and would have been kicking into a strong wind vs. trying to gain three yards. Secondly, one of the things I love about the Hobart program is they trust their players. When coaches take the safe way out, they're saying "I don't know if we can do it." When you go for it in your own end of the field or go for two and the win, you're telling your players you believe in them. Hobart's always done it that way. In the 2006 NCAAs against Rowan, they went for two late and got it, but Rowan had enough time to come back and kick a FG.

I've seen them fake punt from their own ten. You can play for the tie and hope to win in OT or you can say "if we make one play, we win." It works sometimes, didn't work this time.

Someone needs to force silence on the woman Wesley fan who thinks she's Mariah Carey.

Indeed. It's a pretty small, intimate stadium, so our crowd mic was about a foot away from her. I think she was cheering in C sharp.

Meant to mention this last week, the Hobart play-by-play guy is pretty good, but the color guy needs a few cups of coffee and some happy pills. He is one grumpy sounding dude.

Yea those guys are both good, I love how they talk I between the breaks too like the mic was turned off or something.

The Hobart home video takes a direct, live feed from our mixer in the booth. There's nothing we can do about being "hot" during the commercial breaks. We know that we can be heard and try not to say anything that will get us in trouble. If we can come up with a better system, we will.

James, you said it Sunday night -- Hobart seems content to not play outside it's comfort zone, and the further we see this type of scheduling, the more it confirms Ted Baker's point: Hobart doesn't care about or doesn't think it's possible to reach the #5 zone or above nationally.

I didn't say Hobart doesn't care about getting to the next level. I don't speak for Hobart. I was offering my opinion, nothing more.

I believe I responded to the question "what can Hobart do to get to the next level?" My answer was that I don't know if they can. They're not issuing many invitations to the club. The levels of D3 football are: "We Are the Champions" aka Mt. Union and Whitewater. Then, quoting the old rental car commercial, there's "Not Exactly." That's your Wesley, Mary Hardin Baylor and maybe one of two others who begin every year with championship dreams and end with a loss to Mt. Union or Whitewater. Hobart seems to have arrived at the third level, "Put us down for one, maybe two, playoff wins."

Why didn't Hobart go past the second round this year? Because they didn't play tougher opponents in their first two games? No, because they drew in the second round a team that likes to think of itself as the top program in the area, but has seen that mantle slipping away over the last couple of years, a team that was embarrassed by Hobart in their house three years ago, a team that just barely got into the tournament and had a lot to prove, a team whose strengths matched up advantageously with Hobart's weaknesses and a team who seized the momentum early and played a great game.

A lot of factors go into OOC scheduling, cost, recruiting, friendships between coaches, availability of opponents. Who knows who Hobart may have tried to schedule without success? What do the big boys have to gain from taking Hobart's call? If you beat them, no big deal, if you don't, which is a real possibility, maybe that's the loss that costs you a tournament spot.

What Hobart needs more than a tough game or two in September is some tough games with Union, RPI and/or someone else in the league. Anyway, if you want to consider 22-2 in two years somehow coming up short, I'm glad I don't have to Christmas shop for you.
