Hey NESCAC Fans,

It's really unfortunate that we have to do this, but we have less than two weeks to raise a small fortune ($350) in order to renew our ownership of the domain name nothingbutnescac.com so if you've found our coverage of NESCAC sports entertaining, please consider helping us to keep it going for another two years!

Only because things are so quiet, here is the link to the Middlebury-Trinity preview. Hopefully it gets some conversation going. Quotes from both coaches are in there too.

Second preview will be up tomorrow morning.

Completely agree, P'bearfan, about NothingButNESCAC.  It is a terrific site with insightful analysis on the sports that it covers.  I believe that it is done by Middlebury (or is it Bowdoin?) students so I hope that there is some passing along plan for when these students graduate.  They do an excellent job.

Thanks for the kind words. Joe MacDonald goes to Middlebury, and I go to Bowdoin. Both of us are seniors. We have had some younger guys writing for us also, so hopefully they continue with it. It has been a really fun thing to do between readings and problem sets. We don't post here too often since, you know, we have our own place to do that. We do follow the Board closely though. - Adam Lamont

I'm not a huge fan of St. Amour's game honestly, so let me be the one to pump the breaks a little bit here. The main contender for POY honor besides Lucas Hausman is not St. Amour but Dan Aronowitz. Overall, St. Amour leads Aronowitz in PPG 19.3 to 17.3, though St. Amour shots 40.2 percent from the field compared to 49.1 percent for Aronowitz.

However, when you go to conference games (I think we can agree those games matter more), Aronowitz has the edge barely in PPG 18.5 to 17.9. The difference is Aronowitz is shooting 46.5 percent and St. Amour is shooting 37.3 percent from the field. Basically, the score the same amount of points per game but Aronowitz shots the ball three times less per game. Aronowitz also accounts for a higher percentage of his team's points than St. Amour since the Ephs play at a slower pace.

Also, Aronowitz is the BEST non-big man rebounder in the NESCAC. Some of this is because the Ephs aren't great up front, but still give credit for Aronowitz being 6th overall in the NESCAC for rebounding with 7.5 RPG. St. Amour has 5.0. Those numbers don't change much in conference. They are basically the exact same in every other category except for steals per game where St. Amour has 2.0 per game and Aronowitz has 1.0 per game. Personally, I would give the edge to Aronowitz on the defensive end also where he has to run the gamut in guarding power forwards to shooting guards.

This could all change this weekend if St. Amour shots the ball incredibly well and Middlebury gets home court advantage by winning both games. It is equally as likely though that Midd loses both games AND Williams gets to 6-4 in conference, making any difference in team records between them inconsequential.

Hausman and Simonds take 36 shots against Williams.  The rest of the team; 27.

Hausman and Simonds combined: 15-36 (41.7%)
Rest of the team: 8-27 (29.6%)

This is the way Bowdoin plays. They rely on those two guys to score the basketball. Unfortunately they both ended up missing shots down the stretch yesterday. I'm sure it's not the way that Coach Tim Gilbride wants to play, but their best shot is to put the ball in the hands of their two most talented players. The problem is both guys are best creating shots 1 on 1 and aren't great playmakers for others. But they are still tremendous shot makers.

First "Watering the bamboo" now "Boiling the owl."  Makes you wonder what's next.  Kind of makes you nostalgic for the days of "fix bayonets".  At least that made some sense.

JB uses Fixed Bayonets also. He's a fan of slogans for sure. The Boiled Owl idea though long precedes him at Bowdoin. I don't want to give away the story, but I can assure you that the connection to Bates and Bowdoin is pretty tenuous.

That still leaves 54-55, which is a healthy number. But then you take away all of the freshmen and sophomores who saw the writing on the wall and decide that they are not going to see the field and have left the program. Or who have decided that an unsuccessful program is one they would rather not spend their time on. Attrition is natural in every D-III football program. I'd say you might be in the high 30s.

You might be overselling attrition a little with that number of nearly 20 at a NESCAC school. However, you miss something that is prevalent at NESCAC schools: juniors who go abroad. A good number of juniors go abroad (including stars like Matt Milano and Mark Riley), and that leaves a huge leadership hole for schools.

I don't think the NESCAC would (or should for that matter) want to make football players not be able to go abroad just so that they can get a few weeks of spring football in.

In looking at the projected records when adding them all together, my math calculations say there needs to be one more win and one less loss by some team for the projections to play out perfectly (currently they total 39 and 41 wins and losses respectively).  My guess is this is the result of different preview authors across the ten teams.

Again, awesome job by the crew--thanks for helping make the season fun to anticipate.

Gridiron, you are correct in that calculation. We had Colby at 2-6 but they are 1-7 according to the preview which was just an oversight on our part. We went back and changed that and now everything should line up.

Thanks all for the kind words of support. We are having a lot of fun, but it is a lot of work so hearing those words really help.

Radio Silence on the Tufts-Bowdoin scrimmage this weekend??

Geez- PBearfan.....PolBear 73.......step up and fill us in on the venue......make a call to Brunswick for the board.
Good night Mike Linkovich wherever you are.

Not sure when, but it is in Brunswick. Again, not really being called a scrimmage, but a joint practice.

In today's Nothing But NESCAC write up on Bowdoin, Coach Wells alluded to an upcoming scrimmage with Tufts, so it appears that it is making a reappearance after a 2 year hiatus.

Should add that the coaches are referring to it more as a joint practice than a scrimmage. There will be a lot of 1-1 drills against each other besides your standard offense vs. defense scrimmage set-up.

Is anyone else having trouble getting on Nothingbutnescac.com?

We are doing some redesigning and other web stuff that is going to help us a lot in the long term. We know it's not an ideal time to do it, but we should be back online by Monday at the VERY latest. Sorry about that.

Clearly I do not know how to work the quotes on this board!

@NothingButNESCAC thanks for another great season preview! Let me echo the sentiment that you guys should "go pro" at some venue like ESPN and the hope that you are grooming replacements.
A quick question- is the Patricia you mentioned on the Midd team any relation to the former Amherst Assistant Coach and present Patriots defensive coordinator? It is an unusual surname.

Not to our knowledge but we don't know for sure. Will try to figure that out for you.

Tracking back a little to the Hausman-McCarthy argument.
If I was comparing the two to NBA players Hausman=James Harden and McCarthy=Kawhi Leonard. Harden is a dominant scorer who's effectiveness is solely because of his ridiculous ability to score the basketball. Both him and Hausman get to the rim a lot and make most of their free throws. Leonard meanwhile is an amazing defender who swallows his opponents because of his long arms... hmm that sounds familiar to McCarthy.
Both are great players in their own way and fit the rosters around them perfectly. At the end of the day, Hasuman is the better and more important player.
