Men's soccer / Re: 2015 D3 Season: NATIONAL PERSPECTIVE
January 20, 2016, 01:51:05 PM
I find it very odd that a team in the national championship does not have a single d3soccer AA. Especially from a veteran group has played in two final fours and a national championship.

The DUHAWK is the most majestic creature known to man.

John Boy and The Big Brit are great players that teams have to keep an eye on. Anyone who has been close to the Loras soccer program knows that all problems are created by the SWARM!!!! When a bunch of Iowans are running full speed at you, bad things start to happen. Rothert and Pucci have the formula.

I said in an earlier post that POY often favors forwards due to the tangible scoring numbers.  Unfortunately, this prejudices defenders and midfielders to a degree.....

No doubt.  It's unfortunate, but the reality and I don't see that changing.  Even if Division III sports got more exposure and voters cold see more games/players beyond their schedule and their region, I still don't know if it would change.  This is an issue in sports in general.  In football, QB's especially and RB's and WR's are going to be MVP 90% of the time.  Increased exposure and coverage would help the situation.  But that needs to be much more than just the availability of live streaming video of games.  Coaches (and/or SIDs) are not going to have time (they have their own games and practices and scouting and game prep) to be watching games just for the sake of finding out about teams and players they otherwise would not see play.

Just thinking of All-Conference, All-Region, and All-American honors in general, I think defensive midfielders are the most overlooked players.  As a voter, how would you even know who was a defensive midfielder  when you see names from other regions and from teams you never saw play?  And so you have all midfielders (attacking central mids, outside mids, central mids, holding mids, defensive mids, etc...) lumped into one pot, and some of those employed in a more attacking role have these great stats (goals and assists) while a defensive mid has little or nothing that can be quantified into a list or table for the voter.

I thought POY was based on how many 1st team All-Region votes you get with SOS, record, and coach's nomination included.

After much speculation about who would get National POY, it goes to Jeremy Payne for the 2nd time in his Messiah Career. Probably the most deserving (in my opinion), I didn't think his award in 2012 was as warranted as only a sophomore but he definitely earned it this year.

Travis Vegter was my pick since the middle of the year. Congrats Jeremy Payne. I wonder how many people have won this award twice in their careers?!

*Jack Thompson didn't make 1st team All-Region, but I think many of us would agree he was the catalyst for the team. I'm nominating Thompson for d3boards.com men's soccer national player of the year!

Brian Ramirez wasn't too shabby either as far as a catalyst goes.....

Ramirez is a great player but a step slow

Mr.Right,

The Phila Union brought 30 college players of their choice to their invitation only Pro-Combine two weeks ago.  Just a few of those invited were D3 players (Ramirez was one of them).  I suppose they went out of their way to select the one player who is "a step slow" for D3.  Mr.Right...give me a break.  I know you think your opinion is always right and always above everyone else's...but I'm going with the Union's opinion on this one.  They obviously know something you don't.

Do your homework, research the data, understand the facts before you start dissing players and coaches...as you so love to do on this site.

I said Ramirez is a great player. One slight might be that he is not a speedster. If your "data" is telling you that Ramirez is blazing fast then you need to REBOOT. Take off your Messiah shaded glasses and learn even the best players have a weakness or two. It is not uncommon for MLS teams to invite local D3 players to their "invitation" only combine. Ramirez IS NOT A MLS PLAYER AND WILL NOT SEE A MINUTE OF 1ST TEAM ACTION. At best he is a reserve team player as he DOES NOT HAVE THE SPEED TO PLAY IN MLS.
No doubt Ramirez and Thompson should have been A.A. first team selections. And I think Ramirez has the technical and play making ability to play in the MLS. Speed may be in issue but speed isnt as important as you would think playing in the middle. Harrison Shipp of the Chicago Fire was up for Rookie of the year and was a Herman Trophy finalist. I wouldnt say he has blazing speed.

I agree that Ramirez probably wont see a minute of MLS time but you never know. I think he was one of the top 8 players in Div III. Div III guys just dont get looks like others do so he really has to show something at the combine, which he is more than capable of doing.

Mike Pizzello from Loras was a 1st Team All Region in the North, leading scorer in the IIAC (14g) as a defensive midfielder and received the Defensive POY award for the conference and he doesn't make any of the teams? I am not picking on any players here, but Borge from Wheaton makes 2nd team with 4g & 5a? Pizzello donimated every player/team he faced in the midfield  The Duhawks had 3 1st Team All Region selections and no one makes it?  I would love to know who selects the Region teams because Loras also placed a player on the 3rd team that missed the last 13 matches of the season with an ACL injury, explain that one!?!

Pizzello is good, but he was severely outplayed by both GAC CM's the one time I watched him play, I might as well call your bluff on the "dominated every player/team he faced in the midfield comment.  He can win a ball in the air as he is a monster but Lilly (3rd team AA) and Adams (not all-region but I thought he was 1st team all-region quality...) were walking around him like he was a cone.

Pizzello is AA caliber. Thought for sure he would be 1st or 2nd team. He scored more goals as a Defensive Center Mid then the offensive player of the year from Wartburg who was a 3rd team AA. Not sure how that works.... In some cases I feel like the IIAC players get hurt from their own conference. There have been rumors that not every team from their conference votes for All-Region teams which in the end limits the votes they can get for AA.

Why are there 2 Goalkeepers on the first team?
Why aren't there 3 keepers?
Everyone needs a trophy in the IIAC

Ill give the win to coach Andy Filipiak. Duhawks will bounce back. Last time they lost to UWP they advanced to the Final Four. If Loras wants to be successful they need to find a No Goal Patrol fast.

Should be a good match-up against platteville as they added legend to their coaching staff. Andy Filipiak aka Uncle Drew joined UWP this season. Smoothest player I have ever seen.

Heard it was torn. He will be returning for a 5th year. Really tough to see him have to sit out. He is the engine for the duhawks.

Clearly a goal. The center originally signaled for a goal. The ball was touched by #13 and the keeper. It gets better.... the ruling was that the ball entered the goal directly from the throw-in..... There was no throw-in, Kyler Olson crossed the ball in to the box....Bummer.

It is always difficult to play away on a grass field. Im going to say the duhawks will win this one 2-1, goals from Bradley and Rummelhart. While being challenged on grass, I feel the duhawks just have too much talent for UWW. The Hawk Cup will return to Dubuque where it belongs.

I think that was just backing up Coach Rothert's statement showing that he believes they can compete at that level. Not trying to step on any toes here

Im pretty sure Loras beat Drake, the year after drake went to the elite 8. There is no doubt that the top division III teams can compete with the division I programs. We should not be comparing division I basketball and football with division I soccer in terms of talent level. Every school has a basketball team, but not every school at the division I level has a soccer team so the gap is narrowed between divisions.
