Hope College quickly emerging as a national level team, after posting losing records in their last three seasons.  They just completed an east coast swing with wins over Marymount (6-0) and Wesley (3-1).  Hope College now stands at 9-0 (their best start in over two decades).  Hope is one of only six teams in the country who remain undefeated and untied.

Nice results over the weekend for Swat, Eastern, Drew, Hopkins, LVC, Kings

Expected results from Messiah, Lyco, F&M (tied), Dickinson

Gettysburg faces off with Haverford today at 2pm.

Messiah travels to Hopkins on Monday night in what looks to be the game of the year thus far for this region and has critical implications for the region. Game time is set for 7pm.

If I had my crack at it I would predict Messiah pulls this one out 3-1 despite being on the road with a turf surface. Nick West and the now healthy Falcons will prove to be too much for a struggling Hopkins side that will throw everything they can at the Falcons. 1-1 at halftime followed by an early second half goal from Messiah. As JHU pushes to tie it Messiah will seal it with a counter hence a 3-1 prediction. This is a must watch game for anyone who has the time!
Last year's game in Grantham was a barnburner most of the way, with Hopkins actually outplaying the Falcons in stretches. There are at least three important changes from last year. (1) The Falcons generally don't play as well on turf (as you obviously know, MAF). (2) Nick West has emerged as perhaps the most dangerous attacker in D3 (as I have argued elsewhere; with better luck, he could have scored 4 goals instead of just 2 vs Hood last night). (3) Hopkins lost to graduation the man I regarded as the best keeper in D3 (lots of people shared that opinion, since he was voted 1st team AA). This is soccer and anything can happen on any given day, but I think (2) and (3) are larger factors than (1), so I share your view that the Falcons will win--more easily than they did last fall.

Another factor would favor JHU: the Falcons played last night, so it's quick turnaround. However, they used the whole bench (including the GK) for very long periods last night, especially in the 2nd half when I can't recall any starter being in the game the final 30 minutes. That's when Hood scored, incidentally. McCarty was obviously looking ahead to tomorrow night.

On paper it doesn't look like this should be that much of a game.  #1(USC)/#2 (D3S.com) nationally ranked  and undefeated Messiah versus unranked JHU with 3 losses already this season.  JHU has lost 2 of it's last 4 games.  And JHU played a hard fought game on Saturday night versus a .500 team in Muhlenberg.  A game where JHU was badly outshot but they still managed to barely eke out a 1-0 win with a late goal. So unlike Messiah they were not able to rest their starters last night.

Messiah defeated Misericordia, 4-1. West got the first and last goals--and (I think) also got woodwork on what would have been a great goal, but it stream wasn't clear enough to be sure it was him. Misericordia got a nice goal on a counter to tie it early in the second half, before Messiah turned it on.

Following the Thursday's game with York, I noted that Cooper Robbins played significant minutes while not starting, and once he was fully back they might put Luke Grootoff further up. They did today. Cooper started, and Luke was an attacking MF, and he scored his first two goals for Messiah. The first, a header off a rebound on a corner kick, might represent the first Falcon goal on a corner since some point in 2016. I haven't seen all of the goals this season, so I can't be sure. But, they had zero goals on corners all last year and so far this year I don't remember another one. Luke scored again a few minutes later with his feet on another rebound. His presence up front is obviously felt immediately. This is a good sign for Messiah: Nick West has some reliable scoring help.

L. Groothoff played most, if not all, of the game on Saturday at defensive mid.

Hope College defeats Carthage (CCIW) 1-0.  Now goes 7-0 on the season.  One of only 17 undefeated and untied teams in the nation.

It's just WAY TOO EARLY to basically be having the discussion about who will/should be pronounced the best forward in the country (i.e. NPOY).  There simply isn't enough data available yet for anyone to support their opinions (and I have my own).  So this is just all opinion supported by opinion.  At this early point in the season its like flipping a coin four times and heads comes up three times...and you pronounce heads the NPOY because...well...tails just didn't show up.  That's mathematically/statistically nuts. With such a small sample size you simply have no opportunity to overcome randomness.  So I think this discussion is completely and extremely premature.  I suggest we all just sit back and enjoy watching the season unfold and the numbers will speak for themselves (and I don't believe that number of goals should be THE determining factor for NPOY).  Some names will continue to perform and some will fade as new names emerge.  Sit back, watch and enjoy.  And in the meantime...just flip a coin.

Hopefully Hope is for real.  Would be fantastic for Calvin to get pressured a little more in regular season and for that rivalry to get hot again.

Hope College beat Millikin 3-0 yesterday.  Moves to 4-0 on the season.

I think Hope will become very competitive very quickly (starting this year and into next year).

Messiah Instagram reports Messiah lost to Bucknell University 1-0 this weekend.

I didn't see this game myself, but someone who did told me this: Both teams played well with at least a few scoring chances, but Falcons didn't do as much as they could have with theirs. On the Falcon side of the ball, lots of people playing new positions. (They are losing five starters to graduation, and I think he said that at least one key returning player, Shea Quintin,  did not play owing to injury.) Bucknell scored in the second half when Messiah's target was manhandled and lost the ball, leading to a quick counterattack with a very nice finish.

That's all I know. If anyone actually saw it, I'd love to hear another opinion.

Report I got was Messiah had 2 SOG's for the game.  And the Bucknell goal came off of a pass to a back who mishandled it.

...and Clarkson's new coach announced here:

https://clarksonathletics.com/news/2018/5/7/carter-lincoln-chosen-as-new-head-coach-for-clarkson-mens-soccer.aspx

2015 graduate? Wow. He has got to be one of the, if not the youngest head coach in all of college soccer.

The Head Coach at Eastern University is also a 2015 grad and a two time D3 NPOY.
