Now I feel like even having a doubt Pawlowski would be first team was foolish. Congrats to Guilford on taking home the two players of the year awards.

The only 2 Catholic representatives on the list were Seniors Mike Zolfo and Pat Thomas. Both have started 30 or more games for the Cards and are very deserving of this recognition and I'm very glad they both finally got it. It was quite overdue and it's nice to see them end their stellar careers on a positive note.

Will be interesting to see how many kids from HSC get picked first team odac. Given they way we won the odac my bet is not many. Without naming names, how many will be named first team? My bet is no more than four, five tops and this includes both sides of the ball and specialty teams.

I agree with 4 or 5. I don't think more than 7 on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd teams combined.
the only for sure 1st and 2nd team odac players are  Nance, Walker, Moore and Dogget the maybees for 2nd and 3rd are Potter, Rohle, and Stack in my opinion ( Nance could even be the first team punter lol)

Congratulations to Guilford QB Matt Pawlowski on being named as one of 10 semifinalists for the Gagliardi Trophy.

Here's your 2nd (or 1st) team all-ODAC QB.

This all brings up an interesting point...there's at least a pretty good shot Pawlowski will be the First Team QB, no? His TD-INT ratio is insane. 38-3 for the season

And I think with even more parity towards the top than normal, we will probably see a pretty even spread across all 3 All Conference teams

He was out for the game, as was arguably our top defensive player in John Moore.
Real shame both guys couldn't play. Everyone knows how great of a player Walker is but Moore has been a stud for HSC for years as well. That's another big loss and having playing against Sydney the last few years I would say there's not much of an argument about Moore being the best Sydney defensive player. Personally thought he was the best last year as well

Some would argue DC isn't the South!
Quote from: regaleagle on November 11, 2014, 09:38:38 PM
Oh hell to the no. DC ain't got nothing to do with the South

Can someone remind me how to get to the ODAC board to post here? Do we click on the North Region or East Region link? And if someone from Catholic were to make an All-Region team same question: North Region or East Region?

I'm somewhat familar with the ECAC bowls; for the life of me I cannot figure why a senior would want to put in a extra weeks worth of practice to play in a meaningless game in front of a very small crowd (I'm assuming) with final exams, senior papers, and other semester ending work looming, and miss the opportunity to finally watch college football on the tube with a cold one in your hand.
What am I missing ???

tfa no disrespect but did you play college ball? I would have killed for an extra game as a senior or any year for that matter. Even if that game was at 3am on a Tuesday night with not a soul watching. In fact I'd give up ever watching college football on tv again for a bowl game last year. Would make that trade in a heartbeat any day
I cant really even imagine comparing the opportunity to play in a college bowl game vs the "opportunity" to watch college football on tv. I've got my whole life to do that man

ODAC has gotten 2 spots in the playoffs before. CUA and RMC in 2008 and WL and HSC in 2010. Both times the ODAC runner up was 9-1.  With so few at large spots available there's little room for a conference runner up - especially one that is 8-2.

Catholic didn't make the playoffs in 2008.

I assumed they did because of their record of 9-2.
It was probably a post-season game sponsored by the ECAC.

They beat Johns Hopkins that year I believe in a close one. I wonder if other teams in the south/north would join the ECAC, it is always good to see the Seniors get an extra game.
The ECAC isn't an option for teams in the South. IF they wanted to be accurate, they would change their name to the NEMAAC - North East and Mid Atlantic Athletic Conference. And schools are responsible for 100% of the costs associated with ECAC games, many times school opt out playing ECAC Tournament game because of $.

Catholic is an ECAC member, in fact we were one of the only 6-4 teams snubbed from a bowl game last season. My guess is Catholic qualifies because we are a Landmark Conference member in every other sport besides football. Therefore the whole athletic department is eligible making the football team almost permitted by association. Another obvious possibility is our geographical location and proximity to the other "NEMAAC" schools

Hampden-Sydney hasn't always been this good ...
   Joe Bush at H-SC (1986-1996):  61-48 (.560)
   Phil Culicerto (1997-1999):           4-26 (.133)
   Marty Favret (2000-2014):        110-44 (.714)

Wow. I actually had no idea that Coach Favret inherited a losing program. This is extremely impressive.

Congratulations to Guilford WR Adam Smith on being named to d3football's TOW.  In a game I personally watched, Smith had a great game versus Catholic, catching six passes for 204 yards and scoring three times from 16, 29 and 78 yards to help the Quakers to a 42-21 win over the Cardinals.

I personally watched the game as well and couldn't agree more. Smith also made a few great plays that didn't result in TDs, particularly a long 3rd down conversion while the game was still very close. Unbelievable throw from "The Cobra" and an equally great catch from "The Banker."
Hasa and GC2005- On a side note, I thought the broadcast team for the Quakers was outstanding. All the nicknames are hilarious and they were a blast to listen too. Very entertaining, knowledgeable and surprisingly very unbiased at a level where most broadcasters are huge homers. Cream of the crop.

On a totally different subject, the HSC student body lost one of its brothers yesterday in a single car accident. Put the family and friends in your prayers.

Unfortunately we had a similar tragedy at CUA last year when a senior All-American Lacrosse player passed away. Very tough on the community, thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected at HSC.

It's HSC, not HSU

Haha this is great for those who saw the CUA/ CAU controversy.

Anyway, I do agree the proven path to success against HSC is thru pressuring Nance. Easier said than done but I think if you're not at least giving that a shot your not giving yourself much of a chance because the alternative has proven to be unsuccessful.

Now is Sydney's DLine really small and slow this year? They've never had huge bruisers inside and true speed rushers off the edge but small and slow is a bad combo that seems like a stretch to me

GC-CUA game tied up at 14 at the end of the first half. Catholic had the ball inside the 5 twice without getting points, two huge missed opportunities for the Cards. Need to capitalize on those chances in the second half

I think Guilford will win, but 45 is a stretch.  It's Homecoming at GC this weekend and I know Coach Rusiewicz does not want a repeat of last year's letdown at CUA.

I always hated the term letdown and I have always felt it gets unfairly thrown around at CUA whenever we get a quality win. That somehow Catholic didn't win the game, rather the other team didn't play well and therefore lost it themselves. As if to imply that Catholic didn't play a quality game against a quality opponent and flat out beat them.

Now I'm sure you merely meant it as Guilford was 4-1 in the ODAC prior to the game and the loss all but ended their chances of winning the title, thus making it a letdown. In fact all games you plan to win and don't are "letdowns" of some form. I just wanted to stick up for the 2013 Cards! Still think we were a much better team than our 3-4 record would indicate and those losses to E&H and W&L will haunt me forever. Hope that doesn't sound too bitter! haha

FYI Guilford by 45 or more over Catholic this week.

I'll take that bet

Some thoughts on the CUA vs. E&H game:
First off E&H QB Kevin Saxton was flat out excellent. 20-23 for 287, 3 passing TDs 1 rushing and could have been more had he played the last few drives. One of the most efficient and well played games I've ever seen a QB play. That kid is going to give the ODAC headaches for the next few years. His backup Nick Bowen came in to finish the game and arguably played better! Bowen is an absolutely electric runner and after his play you have to figure E&H will find ways to get him the ball whether that's returning kicks or out of the backfield because that kid can run. As a former OLineman myself, I'm obviously going to give the E&H OLine  a lot of credit. If it were up to me they would have won the ODAC Offensive Player(s) of the week award. (The only time I can recall that happening previously was with W&L a few years ago. It should happen more often!) E&H had a record setting performance on offense and all that stems from a dominate performance from their front 5.

Now with all that being said I don't think I need to say anything about Catholic's defense because it was clearly another rough day for them.
Catholic had a few excellent drives on offense but their issue was consistency and is a bit of the product of the offense. When things were clicking they were easily moving the ball down the field on E&H. They did a better job taking care of the ball on as well but its those super quick 3 and outs that kill a team, especially with how the defense was playing. There was a blocked punt early in the game for a TD immediately followed by a fumbled kick return which E&H capitalized on for a score. The game went from 7-7 to 20-7 in the blink of an eye. I'm really hoping these crucial kinds of mistakes will start to disappear as the young players continue to get acclimated to college football because there are a few excellent young guys on this offense. Sophomore RB Matt Perno impressed the crap out of me again with another really good game. He runs and plays so hard its very fun to watch. Another sophomore, WR Lucas Morley is also continuing to impress and I thought played another excellent game. With young talented guys like that on the roster there are bright spots in this so far disappointing season for CUA. Lastly I thought CUA's OLine played well considering all of the injuries they've sustained this season. Both the starting C and RG have missed significant time but I think that group has still done a good job this year.

If CUA plays anything like they played last week again this year they won't come within 10 points of anyone.

7 Turnovers will do that to you. CUA will clearly need to do better with the turnover battle the rest of the way. Tough game tonight at Macon which in my experience is the toughest place to play in the ODAC. Especially Friday night games at RMC I've found to be very difficult. Good luck to my cards tn hopefully getting their first ODAC win this season

Best hotel close to campus ?

My parents always stayed at the Sheraton in Crystal City Virginia and loved it. It recently reopened as The Westin Crystal City so I'm not sure if it has changed positively or negatively. They also stayed at the Marriot in Crystal City while the Sheraton got renovated and liked it as well. They really liked the Crystal City area, quiet with a nice strip of restaurants a block or two away (including a great 24 hour diner) and I think typically a bit cheaper than the hotels in DC. The drive was about 20 minutes to the field which is not bad at all. I know there are some closer hotels distance wise but I'm not sure if it would be a much quicker travel due to the city traffic. And if metro accessibility is a concern to you it is about 45 minutes from door to door with one transfer. Feel free to PM me with any specific questions.

I think you will find our defense to be much different than anything CUA has seen this year, at least I hope so.

No question it will be the best offense, defense, special teams, fans, ball boys, etc., etc. And it's not even close. CUA will certainly need to play a great game on offense and be very careful with the football. Didn't intend to undersell the importance of the other aspects of the game. It will clearly take a great overall performance from CUA to win on Saturday. And while the 3-3 stack may be different, it was always one of my personal favorites to play against! Being an uncovered guard is always a blast.

As for the holes the line backers will leave, CUA will obviously need to use some discretion. I would hope Catholic wouldn't treat this as a game of Madden and just keep selecting Engage Eight! Plus CUA typically has 3 down lineman so sending 2 or even 3 backers still would still leave 5 or 6 back in coverage. And I don't expect too many 6 man blitzes.

It's as if we rank all 244 teams each preseason. Check that out for an idea of who are the worst teams.

Speaking of the worst teams in the country...Catholic took an 8 hour trip to Mass. for a 54-24 win over the lowly Anna Maria Amcats. As in the last few weeks, there have been some considerable bright spots for my alma mater as the O Line continues to play well in addition to a great game from sophomore RB Matt Perno. 17 carries for 161 and 3 TDs ODAC OPOW Perno brings a nice home run threat to the Cards (TD runs of 67 and 27) that may have been the only thing missing from former CUA standout RB Mike Pitsenberger's game. Another nice performance for the versatile sophomore Matt McMahon who threw a TD, ran a TD and led the Cards in receiving with 4 catches for 60 yards. Hoping for all that and a receiving TD one week for the TD trifecta! Senior safety Pat Thomas had a pick 6 and needs to continue to make plays like that for the Cards in ODAC play. Sophomore wideout Lucas Morley had another good game with 4 catches and a score. It's encouraging to see this level of production from such young players. Hopefully this continues in future weeks against the much tougher opponents in the ODAC.

Speaking of which, CUA starts conference play at home against the Tigers of HSC. This will obviously be a huge step up in competition for my Cards but as previously mentioned we normally play HSC very tough and I expect the same to be true this weekend. For the Cards to win this game they will need to pressure Nance as they did in '12 and like Wabash did earlier this season. Giving Nance all day to throw to Walker will no doubt lead to a long day for CUA. I think Nance has proven to be a different player under pressure and so far that's the only blueprint for success against this potent Tigers offense. I expect the Cards to be blitzing all day and hopefully create some trouble against Sydney's inexperienced, but I'm sure improving, offensive line. This will be a huge test for CUA's equally inexperienced defensive line and in my opinion, the key matchup of the game. Either way, ODAC play is here! Good luck to all (except HSC)!
