Quote from: The Dino Man on November 13, 2015, 12:50:55 AMThe return of Ty Ketz to Ripon has more to do with academics than basketball. Ty is a strong student but had issues with transferrable credits etc. His teammates are glad to have him. He makes this team better. Hopefully better than last year. The RedHawks have been 15-9 the last 2 years and are looking to make a move up. Still a young team but not inexperienced. At any given time last year you might see 3 freshman on the floor in tight games. Those pups have added muscle and confidence (just like every other freshman). Ty Sabin is special. If he can take the next step in his development and make everyone around him better, this team will be hard to handle.
I think Sabin struggles from the floor vs more athletic defenders than he is used to playing against. The Warhawks will use a lot of different guys and try and wear him down. Still finishes with 20+ but a lot of it comes with game already decided.
I wonder how Ketz's teammates feel about him coming back after his failed experiment at UW-Superior. Coaching staff obviously decided it was a good idea, but it still is a surprising move.

A year ago my son was recruited by IWU. They were very up front during the process about him being their #2 target at PG for that class. Was a pleasure to get to know Coach Henderson (who is no longer there). We had done our homework and had pretty well figured out that there was indeed a really long bench chuck full of guards. Even with that info my kid held out hope that IWU would call. The process at IWU is intoxicating. Great winning program with a magic atmosphere. And the academics aren't bad either. But it got to be April 1 and our lives were on hold waiting on IWU and the #1 PG target. My son at that point decided not to be known as a #2 and went another direction without regret. Turns out #1 did too going to D2. Still no regrets. Even when coach Henderson called in late April, we declined his invitation with no regrets. IWU again is up front to recruits about what is in the cupboard. All these kids are recruited. I don't buy the notion that kids just show up to play at IWU. Every player they get has a great high school pedigree. They all roll in thinking they can contribute right away. I'm gonna defend iiwwuu to some extent. I think some of these kids could be sat down and given a hard cold reality check by the IWU staff. I don't know if that happens. Didn't happen to my son. I would not call it hoarding. But the sales and marketing never stops. Obviously it is a successful strategy. So I have never had negative thoughts about what IWU or anybody else is doing. I'm just glad we did our homework. My son is better off. And so is my checkbook. There was a statement made about listening to AAU coaches. Be careful when stereotyping these coaches. It is my experience that the vast majority of these coaches are pretty good folks with good intentions. I'm glad we got solid advice from AAU coaches. And even if you won't listen to them....the kids, their parents, and your college coaches are listening to them.

Looks like the conference tourney attendees are set after last night. Grinnel, Ripon, and Monmouth will head to St. Norbert. Can anyone catch the Knights napping?

The better dead Redhawks sit at 7-2 after a good win over Calvin last night 86-80. Sabin goes off for 38 pts and sits #2 in the D3 country in pts/game behind some little guy from Iowa.

Agreed on all accounts. Ripon will hopefully look different in January. First 3-4 guys off the bench are newcomers and need to keep getting better. I wish they would play faster all the time with their lack of size. But what do I know.

I agree that the RedHawks did well. Sabin and Loughrin are great players.
I remember when Lawrence was beating the Badgers in 2005 before Alondo Tucker said enough. Bo Ryan's halftime radio interview walking off the court was classic--"Are you watching that freshman? (Kroeger) If he made another 3 pointer we would be down."
The Redhawks are a good team, but it's important to always remember that its better to be dead than red.
So that's the 2nd time you've hit me with that line. I freely admit to being new to the conference, these d3 boards, and your Rhodes Scholar wit. If this line has a long history as a heart felt insult within the conference, just let me know and I will play along. If its just you being a dick, let me know and I will try and keep up. Thanks again for your help.

Ripon's bank account and UWGB's scoreboard.
UWGB 78
Ripon 56
Ripon was down 5 at half. Got to within 2 early in the 2nd. Then Mr. Sykes said that was enough. Ripon still hung around at 10-12 down for much of the 2nd and ran out of gas. This Redhawk bunch will be fun to watch.

Ripon at UW Green Bay later this week. Who wins?
I will climb in my car tomorrow and drive 7 hrs to see this game. This will be my kid's first college game as he is a Redhawk freshman. Really looking forward to seeing Mr. Sykes in person. Hopefully he doesn't posterize my son more than a couple times.

So are the 2014/15 recruits announced?
I know who St. Norbert recruited. What about LU? Ripon College, Carroll College, Grinnell College?
Ripon brings in 10 new faces. 9 freshman. 1 Sr Div I transfer who will play the 2-3 spot. Freshman class has a PG, and a SG. The rest are 6'6" or 6'7" with very different skill sets. 2-3 of these kids might have a quick impact. The Sr will play. Otherwise this team will ride the talents of So. Ty Sabin and Sr. Kyle Loughrin. Both are natural 2 guards but score in different ways. Last year's PG has transferred after starting for 2 yrs and they also graduated 1 other starter. The RedHawks were 15-9 last year. Coach Kane looks to improve on that with an infusion of DI leadership and young talent. Which is always scary. It may not always be pretty but it won't be boring. Excited to be part of the D3 Boards.
Ripon will probably be the favorite this year along with Grinnell. St. Norbert lost too much to likely contend. Carroll will probably be in the mix also. After that might be a big dropoff.
The Dangler selling SNC short? I expect them to be formidable. As always, better Dead than Red.
So what makes SNC formidable? Same question for Grinnell and Carroll?
SNC had a great recruiting season. Don't know about Grinnell or Carroll. Frosh will play at SNC this year.
Thanks for the insight.
