Not whining at all, and I find it rude of you to suggest I was.  If my opinion differs from yours, that doesn't mean stating them is whining, in fact, I am not even disagreeing with the idea that it might be easier to get into Trinity than Amherst.  I have no knowledge of any actions on the part of any of the NESCAC admissions offices.

What I do have an issue with is the accepted correlation that if you're a winning program you MUST be letting in lesser students.  I just want to make sure that if Amherst starts a 15 year long winning streak here that the same logic is applied to them.  Everyone must suddenly agree that they are lowering their standards in admissions... because how else would you explain it?  There is no other plausible explanation!

And for my FINAL post - thanks to all the posters here, both those that I agree with, and those who make me roll my eyes - I am glad I found these boards.  Reading about all the upcoming games and the opinions on their outcomes was both informative and entertaining.  Good luck to everyone next week.  Win or lose I hope everyone plays their best so they can leave the field feeling good about their performance.

Over and out - Cheers to the class of 2015!   *Happy that the "Pay" part is over, ... Sad that the "Play" part is!

With Trinity still facing Wesleyan on their home field it is possible that they could end up with a 5-3 record.  Using the current logic I assume that means that Trinity has raised the academic bar as of late?

If Amherst, who shared the title last year, goes 8-0 this year, and who knows, does it again next year (?)  then clearly they are going around looking for good players to come join their program and they will "work" with your grades?   If they do become the dominant force on the gridiron, I look forward to the disparaging/sour grape remarks being aimed at their admission standards - because, is the coaching so much better there - No - games are won and lost on the field by players - and Amherst gets great players - some academically strong enough to go to any school and others that would not be accepted at other NESCAC schools.    ...I read it on the internet so it MUST be true!

I did explain it - maybe the kids choose it BECAUSE of their winning history!  Great player become great players in part because they hate to lose!  So wouldn't it stand to reason that if they are smart enough to get into a NESCAC school, they would want to go to a school that wins?  It could also be explained by how much the players enjoy their stay on the overnight visits - or the quality of the recruiters, distance from home, rapport with the coaches or any number of other factors.

Amherst looks like they are starting a little "championship streak" of their own.  Using your logic, if their streak continues, must we all assume it has become Amherst High?  There is no way they can maintain a winning streak based on the attraction of the winning streak itself so it must be that they are letting the lesser students in to Amherst High - correct?

"- who wins the recruiting wars?  ( Williams and Amherst for the true student athletes) ( Middlebury for the next tier - combo of athletics and academics)  This is not a knock on any other school academically - just reality if you looking for a marriage of great athletics and academics.  I think many great athletes choose  Trinity because of admissibility issues or want a city, or value football over academics -  Wesleyan may fit in this category as well"

My son is a "true student athlete", who came out of high school as the captain of a State Champion football team and with an individual State championship in another sport under his belt, along with a (weighted) 4.13 gpa.  When he went to the Trinity coach he was asked what his class rank was (he was 26th I think out of 378 students??) and the coach asked him if that rank was part of his permanent records - because he didn't think it was high enough!  How can that be so at "Hartford High" I ask you?  He was accepted to NYU, WPI, and many other FINE academic schools and yet Hartford High wanted better grades?  So... I think a lot of the posters here ASSUME Trinity has lower standards because if they don't, how would you explain away the discrepancy in talent they acquire?  I have personal experience with their admissions and I am here to tell you it was not at all as you guys suggest.
Maybe the true student athletes choose trinity because it's a great school and it has a history of excellence in football to go with it?  Maybe they won't choose Williams or Middlebury because when they went to watch a game they had to pull over at the entrance of the parking lot and get out and open their cooler to be inspected?  When we went to Middlebury to meet with the coaches, I told my son on the way home "...Unless you absolutely LOVE that school, do not even apply because I never want to make that drive ever again in my life!"  So, there are many reasons people choose different schools and it always sounds like sour grapes to me whenever anyone craps on the Trinity admissions policies.  Like I said, I actually have personal experience that attests to the contrary!  Do you?,... or are you repeating like a parrot what you hear other people say because it makes you feel superior?
Yes, it is in a bad area, we get it!  So are a LOT of other great american institutions!   http://www.thedailybeast.com/galleries/2010/09/13/most-dangerous-colleges-2010.html
My son is in his final year at Trinity and has never experienced any crime personally while one of his friends who goes to Bowdoin (which by the way is in a beautiful area!) had his apartment broken into with several thousands of $$ worth of electronics stolen.  http://bowdoinorient.com/article/9424

It was a heart breaking loss on Saturday - when Banfan said "if we had a kicker we would have won and you know it", it was because it was TRINITY, Not Amherst who found themselves on the 8 yard line with 32 seconds to go... in position to win the game -  I don't think at that point you would have found many Amherst fans that would not have changed places with us, just as I don't think many Trinity fans would have wanted to be the one in the lead by 1 point with the other team on the 8...

Congrats to all the boys - they are ALL great students and great competitors and I hope as the power shifts, as it is apt to do over time, that the rest of you do not find yourselves being disparaged for letting in the riff raff ...as you MUST have done in order to be so good!

And for the record - it was not "reality" as you put it, it was certainly a knock academically on other schools - the sugarcoat you put on it doesn't make it any sweeter

Rest assured, there will be no holding back at the Amherst/Trin game as far as my two boys go.  In fact, you will be pleased to know my younger son is on a mission to match his older brothers undefeated season (and ring!)

He may get a ring (if Amherst gives championship rings when you don't go undefeated) but I am predicting the Bantams come out with a chip on their shoulders much like the Wesleyan game last year.  Amherst would have been better off if Trinity had won last week.  The Seniors are upset the streak ended on their watch - look for them to be at their toughest.
I can't wait - the curiosity is killing me!

Here's a story about another NESCAC split family with one son at Amherst and one at Middlebury - check out the pic of the mom's half-and-half jacket - looks like another Pistol mom! - LOL .

I found this article written by a two sport athlete from Amherst very interesting.  I think it's sad that so few students enjoy more than one sport in college, this is the last 4 years that they get to "play" - "Hello real world!". ... I also feel bad for the parents - with only two more games left in my son's football career, I for one am glad he has one season left of wrestling before I have to find a hobby - haha

It has been my experience that talented or not, Linemen are often overlooked if they are not  monstrous.  It doesn't matter how many accolades you rack up in High school, if you are not tall enough or heavy enough, coaches just aren't that interested!  I think they would rather take the huge guys who aren't that good in the hopes of turning them into what they want over time.  Too much time looking at the paperwork and not enough at the field if you ask me!

If you do get detoured in the streets around Trinity, we strongly suggest locking your car doors and windows and not stopping if you happen to get rear ended. Failure to follow these suggestion could lead to a carjacking or worse, death.  ;)

Ouch.  You're gonna hear from banfan on that post, for sure.

Totally off-topic: Did anyone see Vinatieri recover his own onside kick tonight?  Most amazing kicker play I have ever seen.  At least, the most amazing one that didn't involve a snow plow.  Worth catching it on the halftime highlights.

EDIT: It was actually Pat McAfee who pulled the onside.  Still an amazing play from Special Teams.

PolarCat - Bantam fans don't mind that kind of comment - it's human nature to point UP when you shoot  ;D

I was actually nervous about the same thing - I hope they are mentally prepared and not looking past Hamilton to the next game.  Because they haven't been very competitive in recent years, Hamilton could take some team by surprise.  (Tufts too)

I did reply yesterday but I must have forgotten to click "post"...  chalk 1 up for the newbie

Since my "affiliation" is on the other side of the ball, I feel like I can freely sing the praises of the Trinity offense.  They are huge, fast (all things being relative) and hungry... and most importantly, they are healthy!  Chudi is certainly lucky to have them watching out for him and it looks like he has what it takes to capitalize on that.  The good thing is, if teams concentrate on stopping him, the offensive arsenal is locked and loaded.  They have some serious depth. The running game is working, and if it aint broke...   but it will be interesting to see what happens if they are forced to take it to the air, my gut says the coaches are covering all angles and are prepared.

I'm torn between wanting to savor every last game, and my impatience to know the outcome of the season.

...feeling cautiously optimistic!

I know it's early, but I was just wondering if Trinity senior RB Chudi Iregbulem is currently leading the league in offense with 7 touchdowns and 217 yards on the ground in just two games?  This poor kid waited patiently behind Bunker and Crick for three years so it's nice to see him get his shot.  I hope he breaks a record or two this year!
