Yeah, all those food options are excellent.  In case you haven't been provided enough options, here's some more (these are a couple of miles from campus, however):

Red Cow has some fancier burger options that are quite good.
Punch Pizza on Grand.  Excellent Neapolitan-style pizza, and fast.
Some newer breweries closer to downtown, such as Waldmann (refurbished house from the 1850's with beer and German cuisine) and Bad Weather.  New Bohemia (downtown) will also give you beer and brats, and they have a massive tap list.

Pretty quiet week here considering there are two de-facto division championship games...

SNC travels to St. Paul to take on Macalester.  The mercury looks to drop into the 30s.  We will see if that makes any difference, with Macalester a more passing based squad than the Green Knights.  Probably give the edge to SNC, though it will be pretty close.  31-27

Then lake forest and Monmouth.  I've seen both teams play Mac, and Monmouth looked far more impressive.  Meanwhile, lake forest has had a tendency to play down to their opponents, so I think Monmouth would bottle up valdivia and prevail.  27-14

Lake Forest has played a terrible schedule so far.  Their best win so far was against Macalester, and they struggled to beat Beloit, Carleton, and Knox.  I've seen both Lake Forest and Monmouth play, and Monmouth looked far more impressive even with players injured.  Yes, they lost to Wartburg by a hefty margin, but their win over Hope and a road win against Mac are more impressive than anything Lake Forest has done to date.  Of course, they play in a week and a half, so that'll settle this debate.

MIAC Week 8 2017

I haven't seen it mentioned yet here on the MIAC board, but it's been somewhat of an anomaly the last couple of weeks in the conference. Two weeks ago all the home teams won and this past week, all the visiting teams won.  I don't expect that pattern to continue this week.

Bethel has the bye this week. They get an extra week to mend and come up with a game plan to try to upset St. Thomas.

Blowout game of the week - St. Thomas travels down to Hamline. It's going to be a tough week to be a Piper fan.

Augsburg is at Concordia Moorhead this week. The Cobbers appeared to have their offense rolling again, but I expect the Auggies to put up some points and give them more of a tussle than the Pipers did this past week.

Gustavus is on the road this week up to Collegeville to take on the Johnnies. This might be in the running for the biggest blow-out for the week, but only if the Gusties self-destruct. If they play hard and keep their wits about themselves, this game could be the second closest game in the MIAC this week.

The game of the week is the clash down in Northfield for the Goat Trophy between Carleton and St. Olaf. This year's game is being played at St. Olaf and the Knights are win-less so far this season. However, as you look at the rest of their schedule, this game is their best chance for a win - at least on paper. But I think the Oles will win this year.

Travels down to Hamline? Hamline isn't in Red Wing anymore  ;)

In all seriousness, I always enjoy seeing your previews to start off the week, although I don't envision Augsburg and Gustavus causing the Cobbers and Johnnies as much trouble as you do.

I have been doing an annual fundraiser for mentally handicapped kids at Walmart for over 20 years and today was the day on the calendar. At the last minute they cancelled us saying they only allowed Boys and Girl Scouts anymore.
Guess they don't know what it is like to watch the tears roll down a little 8 year old girl's cheeks while you pin a 5th place ribbon on her.  We'll find other people who care.

Walmart has  never cared about people...only profits! Enough w that rant...good for you!
I must be fair. Over the years Walmart has contributed thousands of dollars to our (Knights of Columbus) mentally handicapped program locally and millions nationally. It turns out that a local decision cancelled yesterday's event. The manager at a neighboring town wants to schedule us at a later date.

Yes, bring on the Tootsie Rolls!

Valdivia has 29 yards. Hurt?

Doesn't look like it, they must just be having trouble running the ball.  He's at 30 yards on 15 carries.
Two quick scores.  LFC up 28-21 now.

Macalester 56, Beloit 21.  Really shouldn't have even been that close with a couple garbage time TDs for Beloit.

What the heck is going on in Lake Forest?  Knox is leading after three quarters?

I guess as up and down as they've been today, it's hard to complain about a 28 - 3 lead.

Tell that to the Atlanta Falcons  ;D

I understand that when if I become an adult that I can no longer post here since this board is for adolescents only.    ;)

Might want to fix the Midwest Conference standings page.  Has LFC and IC 1-0 in conference while Mac and Beloit are listed as 0-1.  My understanding is that these cross-divisional games aren't supposed to count toward the conference standings (as they didn't for the other games).

WOW! I wake up this morning and see where we are deciding who is in the playoffs after week 5  :o
The Cobbers will have an opportunity to chime in on the conversation this week. It will get very interesting pending the result of the Cobbers vs. UST; definitely the game of the week in the MIAC

Looking at the stats, Concordia doesn't pass the ball very much, and in fact yesterday, they only had 31 yards of passing against Gustavus.  The Tommies have given up a total of 191 rushing yards, and -27 over the past two games.  It will be a long day if Concordia cannot get their running game going.  But these are just stats and the game is played on the field.

Should be an interesting game. It's looking like Concordia will be without their starting QB, after he went down with an ankle injury in the third quarter against Gustavus. Concordia used a freshman QB the rest of the way. Not to knock him, but it's hard to win in the MIAC with a freshman starting at QB. If he's the guy the rest of the way, Concordia's run game might not be quite as effective.  I'm thinking UST will focus their attention on Chad Johnson, who is having a great year.

After getting out-coached last year, I'm hoping UST comes in a little better prepared. Especially against the hook and ladder...

If the Cobbers don't have Herzog at QB, it shouldn't hurt them in the slightest. If you look at his numbers on the season, 29-59, for 379 and 2 tds in 4 games, they won't miss that "production". Also if you look at his rushing numbers, 47 carries for 162, 40 yards per game. New QB is 6'4 230, so he is more than capable of shouldering the load. Cobbers are going to get some rushing yards, but I think they are going to have to throw it a bit this week, which has been a huge problem the past couple years. Cobbs win is going to have to be a 17-14 type game, with either D or special teams coming up with a big play.

I actually think Herzog's injury will hurt CC for this game.  While his statline doesn't show his value to the team, that type of offense really relies on rhythm and timing (obviously all offenses do, but this one especially so).  Having a different guy under center can really throw off that rhythm, especially if it's a freshman QB being the replacement.

Any predictions on how St John's will bounce back after their loss against St Thomas? They've been in this position, having to win out in hopes of receiving a playoff berth, each of the past three seasons. With the magnitude of the rivalry, as displayed by the record attendance at Target Field, would the NCAA be inclined to seed SJU & UST (assuming both make the playoffs) where they could meet again? If so, would that be a second round matchup as in 2015 or would they place them in separate brackets?

The geographical limitations make it unlikely the AA would put them in separate brackets. But in this case, too, with St. Thomas having lost a game already, it's even less likely because there wouldn't be a reason to "protect" UST from a rematch since they aren't a top seed. They wouldn't get a 4-5 rematch in the first round but perhaps a situation where they are the 2 and 3 seeds and meet again in the second round. Seeding is kind of irrelevant, especially in this part of the country, because the map will dictate the matchups.

* if both teams win out. Fun fact -- Concordia is more than 500 miles from UW-Oshkosh and that would rule them out as a first-round matchup.

Wartburg, BVU and Luther are also the only IIAC schools within the Concordia 500 mile footprint. All the contenders in the MWC are out of their radius, too. If someone other than Wartburg wins the IIAC, and the Cobbers win the MIAC, we could see a MIAC/UMAC & NWC/SCIAC or ASC/ASC quad. Very unlikely, but fun to think about.

Additionally, Macmurray could very well win the UMAC, placing that league's champion out of Concordia's radius too.

Probably not saying anything new here, but the cause of this most recent NCAA fiasco is money, and the outcome will be driven by money.  Unlike MLB and the NHL, the NBA and the NFL don't have "minor" leagues.  These two leagues use colleges for player development and assessment.  The NBA/NFL save a lot of money with this arrangement, and the colleges make a lot of money.

What's interesting to me is that college athletics seem to be more about the marketing of a college/university than it does about student development.  Does having a better basketball or football team allow a school to better educate the vast majority of their students to be doctors, lawyers, teachers, accountants, etc.?  Probably not, but it probably does help draw students to different schools.

Having a better sports team might have a small impact on a school's ability to educate because marketing the college/university doesn't market solely to students; it also markets it to their alums.  There was a discussion a couple of pages back about how alums are more likely to give money following a win by the football team, so it provides some assistance in those educational pursuits depending on where those donations are used.  This donation pool may just be a drop in the bucket, but schools tend to solicit donations using this strategy so it may be a more significant source of revenue than I think.

So if I'm in the area of Target Field on Saturday, where can a guy find a tailgate welcoming to someone wearing neither red nor purple?
At Macalester.  ;)

+K

Your odds of finding four hippies playing hackysack are much higher than a finding a tailgate at Macalester.

Your comment is so ignorant it's amazing.

If anything, they'd be throwing frisbee or slacklining  ;)
