This team reminds me a bit of the 2014 squad - maybe the most talented not to make NCAAs - that year they had the best QB in E8 and easily the best WR package in a long time only to watch Voz take a knee to hand the ball to Salisbury who won in OT... and then showed up flat as a pancake to IC with the AQ on the line and left on the outside looking in for a pool C

There are too many good 1 loss teams, and a few really good 2 loss teams to hope for that.

Fisher still controls its own destiny - a few things need to happen during bye week: starters need to get game speed and timing back, and the D needs to go school to Re-learn the basics schematic and technique wise (D-Line that means you)

We'll see

Yeah, that thought came into my head too.  They had no business losing to IC in that game, and they had no business losing to Utica. They've got to play a lot better if they want to beat Alfred

And just as the team in 14' did, which this year's team needs to avoid is the "hangover" loss.  It's so hard to go undefeated in the E8, so a loss is almost inevitable.  But really not letting that 1 loss get to you and the attitude linger as it did for Fisher in 14'

I really think there's something special with this Fisher team this year. They've been uncharacteristically mentally tough all season.

When they get their backs against the wall several players are coming through to get them out of jams. It's not just one person. It's Naton & Collicio vs Springfield icing the game with the long TD, it's Logory with the game winning pick last week vs BSC, it's Nelson with back to back picks vs Cortland, it's Naton w/ 6 TDs vs Brockport and running in the game winning TD with a broken hand and it's Fiutko and Smith the past two weeks on offense.

Fiutko had his first pass attempt in the 3rd quarter end up being a tipped pass picked off inside their own 30 which Morrisville's offense subsequently tied the game at 21 a few plays later.

From that moment on Fiutko went 11/12 for 140 yards and 2 TDs in the air and then added a 10 yard TD run for good measure. For a freshman to step up like that in a tie game after getting picked is extremely impressive. He's not just chucking up passes down the sidelines like Hartwick does either, he's hitting those outs, throwing passes over the middle in tight windows and he's rolling out and making difficult throws when needed.

Just like I mentioned last week, the kid played about as good as you can ask a freshman to play.  He not only made plays throwing those outs, but also with his feet like you mention.  The one play that really impressed me, even though it wasn't a huge play was the one where he was scrambling to his left and threw the ball on the run to the TE I believe it was. Not only does he have the ability to move out of the pocket, but to keep his eye's downfield while on the move.  Can't ask for a better two games from him.  Not to say that he has played against the top teams in the E8 but any game in the E8 is never easy no matter who it is.  Morrisville is a much better team than their 0-5 record indicates.  Are they great? No.  Are they awful? Absolutely not.  A few plays here and there and they may have been able to win a couple games.

Something that does concern me is the inability to get offenses off the field for Fisher's defense on 3rd downs.  This year they seem to put together a few good plays and get themselves in a situation where they need one more to get off the field and then let up a big play or get a mental mistake penalty to keep the offensive drive alive.  I'd also like to see more toughness on D.  They got bullied by a QB last night.  Maybe one thing to have a QB throw on you or have an RB make some runs, but they knew that the QB was the only one to carry the ball last night and he did so successfully without much pressure.

I was wondering what people thought of the Freshman QB for Fisher yesterday? His stat line was really good (15 of 22, 3 touchdowns, 0 picks and 1 fumble) and most importantly he won.

I think he played as well as you could ask a freshman to play, asking him to make his first start with some key offensive pieces missing. I think the Fisher staff did a good job at simplifying the offense and cutting down the playbook to suit the first big time experience of the freshman QB. Did turn the ball over with a communication miscue with Smith but what can you expect from a young QB and a D end playing RB. Also Smith stepping in at RB for Fisher was big. Kid has a punishing running style and provided a big spark for them on O. Hope the Cardinals can keep it rolling

Our d was stout to say the least this year----what I will say about all of the losses on D is that if there is one constant with Fisher they seem to reload on D and deal well with adversity.
SP was noticeably absent and the rest of the team stepped it up.
Donitzen was an absolute beast.

I like hotstove this week!
Happy Thanksgiving all!

Where do you think this years D stacks up against defenses of Fisher's past?

That is good news for Nigolian, and for the Fisher faithful!
Here is hoping that Naton can recover and lead this offense as well as Fenti did.
I will say this- Nigolian was the game changer.
Without him as a viable option the offense seemed sluggish and predictable.
I hope that they change it a bit next season!

I agree that the offense was much more predictable and was not nearly as potent with a limited Nigolian, but (as some have mentioned already) some of the problem was the failure to adjust the play calling. Fisher has some horses in the back field with Fusco, Chambers, and Smith and I think they could have used them more once Nigolian was limited. Specifically in the Ithaca game I would have liked to see Fisher pounding the ball with Fusco and Smith and using Chambers out of the backfield catching passes. I understand they were behind towards the end of the game which forced them to air it out, but there was a large stretch of that game that they were winning/within one score. It looked to me like the coaches hit the panic button a little early and started to try and throw the ball down field too often.

Next year with a lot of talent at the skill positions (again assuming they can get the QB situation figured out), I like the offense a lot. Fisher has been good on the O-Line in the past, and I expect a good line next year.

Nigolian has to earn Fishers MVP in my opinion.  With him not there the offense was just lost.  Anyone who saw the Ithaca game can attest.  Even if he is not catching passes downfield, him being on the field opens up running lanes because the CB's and the safeties have to respect the potential deep threat.  If Fusco or Chambers make it to the next level thats a few less people they have to elude to make a big gain.

Totally agree.
Lets just hope that the QB situation gets solved!

Matt Naton has one more year left and he should be fine.  He has played well when called upon. I don't know if they have a young guy in the fold, if not really need to recruit a QB and LB's.

Naton coming off a pretty serious knee injury a few weeks ago does have a lot of time for recovery.  He is a good QB.  Last year against Buff St. he led the team to victory and had a pretty good day stat-wise.  The Naton to Nigolian will be a dangerous one in the coming year.

Uhh Nigolian is graduating.

Or did I miss something?

Nigolian missed a large portion of the 2012 season I believe it was due to a nagging knee injury.  He still has another year of eligibility.

This post just made my day. As stated by others, the Fisher offense was very different without him healthy, but even more than that, with Fisher breaking in a new full time QB next year Nigolian is about as good of a bail out wide receiver you can ask for. He is big and tall, and will fight for the ball. Not a bad guy to have as a security blanket for a young QB. I like Naton last year when he had a chance, and though Catan had some moments. I would imagine if he can get healthy Naton is clearly on the inside track, and if he can perform (Fisher has had some luck with QB's in the past) then the offense could be really good again if Nigolian comes back. I love the backfield next year, and Collichio (sp?) is back.

Anyone know the newer rule on medical redshirts?  I actually redshirted myself, and it's great to see any player get to play his full 4 years and still get to go to school.  I did think the rule changed though....

Not sure of the old system or if this clears anything up for you but this is what I have found...

The player must get 4 seasons of sports in within 10 semesters of school, which I think is a general rule not necessarily tied to a medical hardship waiver as they call it nowadays.

Injury or illness must have kept the athlete out for at least 3 games or 30% of scheduled or completed contests.

This has to have happened in the first half of the season.

Lastly there must be proper medical documentation from a physician proving that the athlete is unable to play.

As far as school goes for a 5th year, usually a player enrolls in a graduate program or they fill out the rest of their requirements for undergrad.  This means they are able to take less than the required full time amount of 12 credits to play.  So if they need 1 class to graduate they are permitted to do so and play.

Naton is more than capable of coming in a doing a fine job at directing the offense.  He is a big QB who can run when needed and has a monster of an arm.  From what I have heard Nigolian will be back to finish out his last year of eligibility.  I do hope that the offensive system adapts a little bit and expands the running options, play calling wise.  It seems like Fisher runs primarily an outside zone concept.  I think if they expand the playbook running game-wise it will open more looks down the field with Nigolian.  That combined with Collichio on the short and intermediate underneath routes could make Fisher an even more dangerous offense.

Shoot.  If Nigolian comes back then next year just got a whole lot brighter for Fisher.  The offense was completely different without him.  To the point where I feel like Fisher would still be playing this weekend if he were healthy.

If Fenti didn't tear his Labrum in his shoulder I'd agree...

They were on their 3rd string QB and we all saw it wasn't pretty...

But that's great news if he comes back, that's for sure!!!

I'm going to agree with you here.  Caton had some moments against a not so good Alfred team but did turn the ball over a few times.  The Fisher offense seemed lackluster the last few games even with Fenti against Ithaca a few weeks back.  Even if Fisher did make it into the playoffs, I find it hard to believe that they make it out of the first round with two of their top 3 offensive players out (I consider Fusco the other).  The downfield attack no doubt wouldn't have been the same even if just one or the other played.

Just checked the roster and the statistics.  It was the 2012 season...played in only two games.
