Calvin has named Mark Christner as head coach of the Women's basketball team. Christner was a player (and then) assistant at Calvin before moving to Waynesburg (PA) to serve as the head coach of their Men's program. He was a women's assistant at Calvin before he moved to the men's side.

Hopefully the College/University can now turn major attention to the men's opening.
Interesting news. I imagine he was a candidate for the men's job as well.
I had the same thought. Could this mean that the process for selecting a new men's head coach is nearing completion?
I know nothing, but I don't guess this indicates anything about the Men's position, which is still posted. The posting for the Women's position has been down for some time.

Playing in a semi full NBA arena will be pretty cool.Quote from: ziggy on April 24, 2019, 05:25:59 PMQuote from: Jameswys on April 24, 2019, 05:00:02 PM
Well, since it's been ignored between recruits and coaching changes, I'll comment and say it's totally badass that the D2 and D3 champs will be played in Atlanta next year. Having all three tournaments in the same facility and on the same court will be a great experience for the D2 and D3 athletes. This is an exciting change.
Same city but adjacent facilities as D1 will be in the football stadium and D2/D3 will be in whatever they call the NBA arena these days.
Well that sucks. Nowhere near as cool for the athletes.

Could it be argued that no matter who the coach was that class was coming to Calvin? (real question because I don't know) As talked about previously on this board Calvin no longer "just gets" the same kind of talent from the local Christian high schools. Recruiting today is a whole different animal compared to the late 1990's. For better or worse high school players want to feel sought after, they need that face to face time with the coaches, and want to be able to post on Twitter and Instagram who they are "blessed to receive and offer from". Just feels like this coach will be coming in a little behind the 8 ball.

Here is what Massey predicts:
Albion 75
Olivet 74
with Albion at a 51% chance of winning
Calvin 70
Trine 76
with Trine at a 72% chance of winning
Both of those sound about right to me, and should make for some very entertaining games!

To add on to TUAngola. Pizza King in Indiana is the best pizza I've ever had. There are a few on this board that would also agree

Calvin gets the win over Trine 81-76 despite DeVries in street clothes and Shymanski having a less than stellar game. DeWitte picked up the slack dropping 29 while shooting 7-9 from deep. It's been said before and will be said again, Carson Meulenberg is a heck of an athlete. Dare I say his blocks are actually more exciting than his dunks
He really makes this team fun to watch. Now winners of four straight games Calvin has to be the hottest team in the league and seems to be headed in the right direction for tournament time.

... nor did the bow-and-arrow celebrations. Use the term you did to describe it is over the top as well.
douche - an obnoxious or contemptible person (typically used of a man)...
The bow and arrow gesture on the first basket of the game is obnoxious. Repeating it for the next three is even more obnoxious, moving toward contemptible. I have seen plenty of Hope players do "douchy" things over the years, and I will again I'm sure.
None of this takes anything away from calvin's win. Unlike the first meeting, Hope shut down DeVries but calvin's players not named Derrick gave them a true team win. It was hard fought and well earned.

Well Calvin certainly didn't leave it up to the officials tonight with an almost 40 point win at Alma. Shooting 68% from three along the way

I agree, I believe I even heard a "worse half of basketball all year" out of KVS shortly before halftime. Shot selection and some defensive errors seem to be the main reason. Would have been nice to come out of halftime a little more inspired instead of letting Anderson cut the lead to single digits, but never the less still a 20+ point win.

I won't lie I haven't been on here in some time so forgive me if this was already brought up. Bryan Powell will be joining the Calvin coaching staff as an assistant coach.

Knight2Day, Taking shots at other coaches at Calvin and other people on this board are not the way to go about this. Please have some dignity on the posts so you don't create a worse image for the other Calvin fans on the boards, who enjoy reading and writing about our beloved school, even if they happen to have had a terrible year.
Thank you.
Taking shots at other coaches? Pretty sure I was talking about how the other coaches at Calvin do a great job (Warners, Souders, Diemer). And the board is a place for public opinion, I'm entitled to mine.
