I wonder if MIAA men's jv coaches and players are feeling frustrated to have games cancelled--and to be left with a diminished schedule.
The Hope jv team, for example, ended up with games cancelled last Wednesday against Adrian, and this Wednesday against Olivet--both of which were able to field teams earlier this year . . . but apparently have had recent attrition?
But then the Hope women's jv team has it worse, with only 13 scheduled games this whole season--three against Calvin.
Are such problems with schools fielding jv teams longstanding or recent?
So this is the 2nd year in a row that Adrian had a JV team for only part of the year, and that may have occurred further back as well. Olivet had a team but when they played at Hope earlier in the season it was with 6 guys (one from the varsity) - Adrian's squad was similar maybe 6-7 guys. All it takes is an injury or two or other factors and suddenly you can no longer play. It's a shame, because I'm a firm believer in the great things a good JV program can do to prepare players for the college varsity game.
I feel like it's unsurprising that a Hope fan (or Calvin fan) would find the significance in JV basketball. And I don't think it is without merit, but perhaps smaller schools have a different view.
I think theres a perfect example of a "smaller school" JV kid this year at Alma.
Kevin Scheibert was a JV kid, he's given a reliable and consistent 12.2/6.9/1.9 this year playing about 30 minutes a game. Those are the kids you maybe lose if they aren't playing close to full job schedules for two years.
Even worse, what if that's a kid you don't even recruit because you don't think he's going to contribute anything for his first two years?
I think even if you can get a kid or two each year like that it makes your JV program 100% worth it even at the "smaller" schools.

This week in MIAA officiating:
https://youtu.be/ou3qta-gBsg?t=5631
This isn't necessarily a bad call either way, its one of those 50-50 calls you either get or you don't and what color you're wearing determines what you think of it. What I found amusing about it is that Coach Mitchell got the call but spent the entire walking the ball up the floor time arguing for a travel on Edwards.
FWIW, I don't think Hargraves is really upset at the call, but from where the call was made. A recurring theme in MIAA officiating this year. The ref in front of Hargraves doesn't even flinch and I'm not sure Arnulfo Perez(baseline) is even awake.
Bonus: Follow the play to Hope's next possession and Dennis Towns is bumped just as he's turning to rise for a jumper, also 50-50 on whether the process of shooting has started. I've certainly seen those types of shots counted.
Here's one from Albion/Trine the officials just flat out get wrong
https://youtu.be/V-OKVbBJBvs?t=5326
Live I wasn't sure, but I'm sitting at the other end of the court. Very clearly the ball doesn't touch the rim and two officials even signal shot clock violation, but a talk ensues and curiously one of the two guys who signals shot clock violation (John Creek, under the basket) never gets involved in the discussion.
I don't understand how this is overturned without Creek getting involved (also interesting he was not the head official). Brooks Miller wasn't happy and shouldn't have been.
Albion missed the ensuing shot, so no matter. But this is pretty bad I think.
Quote from: sac on February 10, 2018, 11:38:21 AMI think Alma actually asked for him to ref the game
Speaking of Mr. Parks, it was pointed out to me Wednesday night that the Hope/Alma game tonight will probably not have Jordan Parks as one of the referees.![]()

Is Bradfield and/or Gamble hurt at alma, neither played yesterday and bradfield hasn't played the last 2 games.
I was at the game Bradfield got hurt last Saturday, he and Heard from Adrian looked like they stepped on each others ankles. Heard returned but Bradfield spent the rest of the game on the trainers table. I would guess ankle or knee.
Can't speak for Gamble's absence yesterday but he missed a couple games around the new year as well.
Gamble got hurt at the end of the Trine game on Wednesday. Don't know what the extent of his injury is.
