Has anyone seen what the 2024 playoff bracket looks like? How many teams have first round byes?

I didn't detect any "reaction" from the luncheon crowd. Gary made the announcement after introducing the coaches and moved on.
I think Reusse's comment on X told the story. If you want to be a contender in baseball, it's a year-round commitment. The baseball program needs a full-time head coach, focused on baseball.

At the luncheon yesterday, Gary said there were 184 players in camp. 59 freshmen and 11 transfers.
He also announced Jerry Haugen has retired from coaching football and will continue to coach baseball.
Reusse had a series of tweets about the announcement last night.

No, I get it. I just hate these 1st round "mis-matches" that could end up being 60 point games or could end up like the 2019 Aurora game. There's just not enough data, and I always expect the worst.
I compiled this just because I thought it was interesting. Games in italics were seasons in which SJU was undefeated in the regular season.
SJU's first round playoff games since the inception of the 32-team bracket in 2005
2005: SJU defeats Monmouth, 62-3 at Clemens Stadium
2006: SJU defeats Central, 21-13 at Central
2007: SJU defeats Redlands, 41-13 at Clemens Stadium
2008: Whitewater defeats SJU, 37-7 at Whitewater
2009: Coe defeats SJU, 34-27 at Clemens Stadium
2014: SJU defeats St. Scholastica, 35-7 at Clemens Stadium
2015: SJU defeats Dubuque, 51-7 at Clemens Stadium
2016: SJU defeats UW-Platteville, 32-31 at Clemens Stadium
2017: North Central defeats SJU, 17-7 at North Central
2018: SJU defeats Martin Luther, 84-6 at Clemens Stadium
2019: SJU defeats Aurora, 51-47 at Clemens Stadium

So any official word on Syverson yet? Regardless, Backes with a legendary opportunity. I think the magic will be with him.
Pat called it on the D3 podcast. Broken leg, out for the year.
Ah, right. SagatagSam said similar yesterday. I was wondering if anyone had heard something from someone in the program yet. We may need to wait for Football Weekly on Thursday.
Not trying to speak for Pat but if he reported it publicly, it's likely true (dude knows a few folks "inside" the program). He has been trained in source based reporting!
The way Scott Bierscheid was holding Severson's ankle/leg.....fracture seems likely....
Backes has bided his time, paid his dues, came back for an "extra" season...son of a coach & Johnnie QB....quite a script for. "Cinderella story"...👍🏻

One day when we're 57s ourselves we may be watching the Johnnies beating the Tommies again to a rapturous chorus of red and white (and pastel blue...).
I think we need to come to a consensus on what the official color of blue the Johnnies wear. So far I've heard:
Baby blue
Light blue
Powder blue
Pastel blue
Sky blue
Marian blue
Could we call it Johnnie Blue? Maybe that would conflict too much with Johnnie Red. My next vote would be for Marian blue, because that was the official color of blue until the late 50s.
AD Alpers likes "Johnnie Blue". Marian Blue would be the traditional pick.
I prefer "Sagatagan Blue"!!!
Please stop with "Baby", "Powder", "Light", "Pastel"... all are much too weak!!!!

Remember too that the Johnnie fight song goes "....something, something for the Cardinal and Blue."
For your dear old Alma Mater
And the Cardinal and Blue!"
In the early-mid 70s, the blue was called "Columbia Blue"... Jim Smith told me he was told the colors were Cardinal Red and Marian Blue when he arrived in 1964.
Athletic Director Bob Alpers is promoting "Johnnie Blue" as the official name!! Over the years, there have been many variations. I always thought the track and cross country uniforms were the "true" shade of Johnnie Blue.
Basketball went to blue jerseys in 1977-78.... they have gone back and forth between red and blue for away uniforms. Johnnie Hockey "retro" blue jerseys are awesome!
I never thought I would see blue football jerseys....did anyone check the turf in the Collegeville cemetery for tremors?

I like them and applause Gary for his courageous decision!!!
I like the blue jersey/white pants combo much better than the all red (jersey/pants) look.
Seems like for the "big games".... the traditional look has been selected.... I expect that will continue....next week, red jerseys, white pants.... and a dominant performance vs. Bethel!!!

Baby blue shorts? What do you all think?
https://twitter.com/sjujohnnies/status/1426284476657713154?s=21
I'm fine with it in a practice setting.
Another Johnnie and I were talking this afternoon about how the possibility of a 1930s uniform throwback is closer than we think.
That's a light blue uniform with red trim for those who don't know.
90 years later and Johnnies still have that trademarked look. My Aussie wife claims she can spot a Johnnie from 100 meters.
The "official" color is Marian Blue! I think there may have been blue in the uniforms when John first arrived. It might be a "tall tale"....I think John opted to eliminate blue and go with red only as a cost saving measure. I believe baseball and football are the only sports without Marian Blue in their uniform colors. Basketball switched to blue uniforms for road games back in 1977-78, but have switched back and forth over the years. I think the blue hockey jerseys are really sharp.... Not sure I would like football to abandon the traditional red /white look!!!

That #2 sure was a shifty one. Reminds of another #2 that handled the ball a lot on the way to a 2003 championship!

Thanks for sharing, Faunch! Never gets old!!! Actually, other than SJU building the 28 point lead only to see it evaporate, I didn't recall specific plays.... other than our final possession... Roeder's wheel route and Norman's throw were magnificent. Schmitz recovering the fumble....and the ball sailing through the uprights as time expired....
Porgy (Dan Dorgan) got injured in the 3rd quarter... he and John Kessler were alternating at RG prior to that....Porgy can be seen on sidelines with shoulder pads off, standing behind John....that Roeder could even run was a miracle... he had a knee injury, which was why Chris Boyd was starting at WB... Boyd gets hurt, Roeder pressed into service...and the rest is history!!!

Cool pictures. I assume Johns could make field goals that year?
I'm old enough to remember 1965, when SJU beat some team by 11 FGs for the national title, D.O.C..
Thanks for the additional photos, Repete!
"Upon further review".... I made a few errors:
#62 LG is Steve Glocke
#67 RG is, indeed, the legendary Dan Dorgan-my roommate! He was injured in the Stagg Bowl and was replaced by #60 John Kessler
The WR was Dave Rockers, not Pete....
Defense was led by:
#94 NG Ernie England
#74 DT Joe Wentzell
#58 LB Tom Young
I know he played wider receiver a few years later, but Dave Rockers would have been a freshman then, are you sure that's correct?

RIP, Frank Berres. As someone who sat in the section in Rat Hall, through the cobbing of Sonny Gulsvig and Rozier visits, it's quite a legacy.
Here's a bit of history, taken from the far stands during the 1976 Stagg. Got a slide scanner for some family image duties, but found a handful from Phenix City, Ala.
Crazy they let the teams wear their red and orange jerseys. Almost looks like the Cornhuskers and the Volunteers. Love the striping on the socks too!
Towson was starting its climb in divisions. When they introduced the coaches. There was Gagliardi and a couple others (maybe Fr. Otto Weber?) and then came Towson, which had about a dozen assistants, all in color-coordinated orange polyester.
Great game as well. Live on ABC.
What a great photo!
Assistant coaches were Dave Arnold (SJU-73) who also coached track and Greg Miller (SJU-75) who coached wrestling.
#2 QB Jeff Norman
#46 FB Brad Eustice
#44 RB Tim Schmitz
#30 WB Chris Boyd
#83 TE Mike Grant
#70 LT Bob Brigham (pulling)
#62 LG John Kessler (who split time with #67 Dan Dorgan!!!
#59 C Dave Grovum
#62 RG Steve Glocke
#75 RT John Ringle
Missing from photo is (most likely) #13 WR Pete Rockers
SJU led 28-0... Towson comes back to tie @ 28. Norman throws deep to a hobbled #22 Jim Roeder who makes the catch and limps to the 1 yard line.
Norman fumbles snap and Tim Schmitz somehow recovers the ball.
TO-SJU with :03 left. Norman calmly changes his shoe to the square-toes kicking shoe and kicks the winning FG as time expires....
it never gets old.....
