UWL hung on to beat the Luther Norse 26-19 before a good crowd on a humid night in La Crosse, and the players and coaches are to be congratulated. Compliments to the Norse for a spirited effort, and to their many fans who made the trip to back their team. During preseason media events, coach Dettwiler indicated that this Eagle team would be able to close out the tight games which eluded a more experienced squad last year. The first test has been passed, and I hope they get into a habit of expecting to win the close ones. The offense put 26 pts. on the board, and the defense hung on in the clutch. Having said that, the Eagles were far from dominant on either side of the ball. Indeed, the running game was mediocre at best, and stupid defensive penalties almost allowed the Norse to pull out the win. 5-5 seems to be a realistic goal for this edition of UWL football.
Great turnout for this game - although it seemed more due to the traveling Luther crowd than UWL supporters showing up. It was encouraging to see the Eagles close out a tight game and make plays when it counted. First half was pretty sloppy, but the Eagles really picked it up and got into a rhythm right away in the second. Santucci showed some explosiveness but was really the only skill position guy for the Eagles to do that from my vantage point. Defense didn't play great but got the job done.
It would have been nice for UWL to take advantage of the difference in talent and put Luther away but it never happened. From the stands it felt like it should have been more of a 35-10 or so final score but they let Luther hang around. A win is a win and we need as many of those as we can get - next week against St. Thomas will definitely be a challenge after they pounded UWEC.
Both teams in my opinion played very sloppy UWL just seem to capitalize on Luthers mistakes all night.
