My take is that VOJ was "speculating" on the call at first - what the penalty was going to be - rather than agreeing that it was targeting (he could have said "There's a flag, I think the ref is gonna call targeting there"). Then he saw the replay and his opinion was no targeting.

Fair. I didn't see if the flag was already out before he made that comment, so in my mind, he was reacting to the hit not the flag

USD is not a great team.

They've had three winning seasons since 2011. They aren't even good most years--in fact, they've been downright terrible lately (3-8 in 2022). Every now and again they make it a fight for the middle of the MVFC, perhaps upset SDSU or NDSU in a shocker, but that's about it.

My reference was to UST covering the spread, knowing that USD is not a top tier MVFC squad. Frustrating we couldn't get on the board but better than the 41 pt drubbing against UNI or 31 against Southern Utah. Good measuring sticks if nothing else. We'll see if we get back any of the injured guys for this Saturday.

My Johnnies appear to be gouging a bit and I'm a bit bothered by it.

Upon further review...I did a few calculations. Round trip to Collegeville and back home is about 170 miles which costs about $30 in fuel. Add in ticket price plus some beverages and vittles and the day costs me $60. Realistically I'll attend in person the Trinity, Bethel and probably the Concordia game. Paying $30 to watch the Carleton and St. Scholastica from home will cost me less than driving up for one game. Change is hard but inevitable.

We all have choices. I get it. Last year our tailgate spots doubled in price, but as one of our group said "they know and we know they know but, what are we going to do, not tailgate before the game? No, and they know it, so we pay."

Last I heard tailgate spots were $100 for the season. So you're saying they're $200 now?

I believe he's a grad transfer. At one point I believe the MIAC prohibited grad students from playing athletics (to level the playing field since not all schools offered grad programs?). Is that actually (or still) the case?

That's what I would advocate for. I don't see how you could go through a season without playing a team in your conference at all. I would try to scale it back to 18 games first and try that out for a few years to see if there is a meaningful bump with an extra two non-conference games. No sense in dropping to 16 right away.

The more I think about this, I can also think of scenarios under a 18-or-fewer-game conference schedule where a team (or two) could get hosed nationally because they don't end up playing the strongest team in the conference twice. Think about being a bubble team in the old MIAC and only playing St. Thomas once? That's gotta sting the ol' SOS a little bit.

Same thing could happen in the future.

I accept that I could be completely wrong on all of this, but I'm just trying to think through the potential pitfalls of a smaller conference season.

Could you model the protected games around something like what football does where the top teams are going to play each other based on prior year performance?
