I'll play - I'm going D. I know, atypical for Hope but we can dream, right?

Beckman
Lewis
Honer
Granger
Gamm

Bench will roll deep this year with Dietz, Davis, George, Thomas, Dykhouse, Hackert, Zandstra, Vree all getting appreciable minutes, and a "hot" guard approach to manage the 6-7 who are bottlenecked there.

I like it
If you enjoy 15 loss seasons you can go with that lineup

That lineup would not win 7 games - only proven players are Lewis & Granger. I'm not convinced that lineup could stop anyone on defense either.

Gamm has to stay healthy and work on his conditioning, Little Danny scored 18 in one game and at 5'9'' struggled on both ends of the floor all year & Honer plays hard but plays scared on offense and is a foul machine on defense. Have to see much more on any of these three.

Competition will be wide open with opportunities for everyone. Lineup & rotation likely to change many times before league play.

Albion 87  Hope 56

One of those days one team plays great the other doesn't.  You end up with this.

Hope:  Beckman 16
Albion:   Fordham 16, Ebeling 13, Bennett 12, Lowe 11, Collins 10

Hope went 2-6 against the 4 teams above them in the standings so 5th is probably about what they deserved.

Olivet 85  Calvin 71

Already been said but Colin Jones makes Olivet a really good team.  Comets controlled this game almost from the tip,  couple good pushes from Calvin but they never got much closer than 4 maybe.   Knights were shorthanded, might have made some difference here or there.  Without a great game from Carlos A-G this would have been super ugly.   Bos took a hard fall late in this one, friend says ankle, he was grasping at his hip or something, don't think he returned.

Olivet Edmond 24, Jones 22, Manuel 22
Calvin   Amoros-Gutierrez 22, Bykerk 14

Olivet's your MIAA Tournament champions if they play 3 games like that next week.

It was more than just a bad day for Hope. On Saturday, Albion completely dominated Hope blowing them out by 31 points. Hope's effort was very weak. Other than Jason, the little Hope guards provided no offense or defensive resistance as Albion's guards were celebrating and having fun all day shooting over & driving around little Danny and Cal Hackert & Riley. Coach Mitchell made very few adjustments and let it get out of hand early. Look for the Calvin guards to play right through them as well on both ends of the court. Calvin will put length on Jason, rough up Riley and double Preston so both Teddy and Dennis need to have great games against Calvin or it will be a 3 game Calvin sweep. The bigger Calvin guards along with Dewitt's shooting and a deeper bench will be the keys for Calvin. Looking forward to the great rivalry on Wednesday. Winner gets Trine in Angola with Olivet and Trine heading for the MIAA championship.

After taking a weekend to reflect, my thoughts on the 200th meeting are...

1. How many times is Hope sputtering on offense for 5 minutes going to be the difference in their games this season? Very frustrating to watch unfold as a Hope fan. It's like groundhog day, you know it's happening because you've seen this script play out before....

2. Teddy Ray is a REALLY good defender. It's crazy to think that NEXT season will be a rebuilding year, with the way this season has played out. But with Jason, Teddy, and Dennis graduating, it's going to be interesting. Preston and Riley give me hope that it won't be as bad as it seems. :/

3. Alex Bos' bow and arrow thing is the douchiest thing I've seen in a while. I'm a little surprised KVS allows it. Sure, he made Hope pay for doubling DeVries every time he touched the ball... But there are a million better ways to celebrate going 4 for 4 from 3 than that.

4. It's looking likely we will get a 3rd game between these two in the MIAA tournament. That's assuming Hope takes care of Kzoo, Adrian, and Alma this week. If they don't, not making the MIAA is a very real possibility.

5. Congrats calvin on a hard fought, good win on your rivals court.

Great crowd and an excellent atmosphere with Hope coming up short again. Same story, Hope starters were solid but the bench was completely overmatched on both ends of the court and outscored 27-3? Coach Mitchell made few adjustments and has a lot of one dimensional undersized bench players. Probably the most ineffective bench in the conference and there has been very little player development. Coach KVS & Calvin have now beaten Hope in 4 of the last 6 games and 3 of the last 4 at Hope. Hope is spiraling down and Calvin is improving and having fun. Quite possible that Hope plays their way out of the MIAA tourney. KVS had a sly smile on his face as he walked off the court since he is very confident in this ongoing rivalry and chess match. Congrats to Calvin!

What leads to this conclusion?  I certainly do not see evidence of that in the in-game coaching.  Is it the lack of emphasis on recruiting?  Or the fact that more people are not expressing their dissatisfaction and disappointment with the current situation of mediocre teams?
I will say, that I haven't heard the calling for KVS's head with the same fervor and vitriol that I have in years past...

I will also say, that for the first time in his career at Hope, I've at least entertained the thought that perhaps Coach Mitchell just isn't a very good defensive coach. Dietz, Davis, George, Granger, and Vree are all underclassmen that could either prove or dispel this notion in the next couple seasons.

Hope Defense? Not too sure what we saw against Olivet even qualifies for defense or offense. The effort and game plan were both very poor. Players seemed to be uninterested and defeated early in the first half. No adjustments were made and Olivet won easily and could have won by 40.

KVS has had much less talent at Calvin over the last few years compared to Mitchell's talent at Hope. Calvin has beaten Hope more often despite this gap. The Calvin fans may not like KVS so much but they probably feel confident when he coaches against Mitchell. Look for Calvin to sweep Hope this year despite a very average team. Calvin has more depth and plays better defense.

Really good game for most of it ... Hope had one tough 9 min stretch ... where they really struggled... Hope made a nice flurry to kinda get back into it... Beckman (or Lewis/Preston) had a really tough night shooting to begin with compounded by a few gravity defying rim outs....

Hope seems to be able to play with anyone when Jason, Riley, and Preston are making their shots. But since there's really no one outside of Teddy and Dennis to pick up the slack if one of them has an off night, this description sounds oh too familiar. I'm fairly certain it's not the last time we will see a recap that looks this way either.
Hope really struggled at Trine last night down at one point 55-35. Riley Lewis hit a few meaningless threes in the second half to make it look a little closer. Trine made some excellent adjustments at half and cruised to an easy win. Same story with Trine's bigger guards playing right through and right over Hope's smaller guards. Hope's bench was non-existent again and it doesn't look like any of the bench players have confidence on offense. Teddy Ray's shooting slump continued. Formula to beat Hope is clear for the MIAA coaches - slow down one of the big three (Beckman/Lewis/Preston) results in a Hope loss. Slow down two and it's an easy win. Trine played physical and trapped Beckman & Preston and dared others to beat them. Coach Mitchell inherited a ton of talent and no longer has Hawkins & Blackledge & Benson to bail Hope out since the MIAA teams talent now seems to be quite equal with many of the teams. Interesting year ahead in the MIAA. Trine looks very good.

Last week Hope carried a lead much of the game but faded at the end. Today was the reverse . . . a strong finish . . . as Hope lost the first 30 minutes by 10 points, and won the last 10 minutes by 17 points, carried by Jason Beckman . . . and with all but two of the 77 points coming from four starters.

A curious fact about Jason Beckman and Riley Lewis.  After eight games they both are shooting (plus or minus a tenth of a percent) 48.5% of their shots and 38.4% of their 3-point shots. Both are shooting a spectacular ~96% of their free throws. And both have 30 rebounds.

Both Jason Beckman & Riley Lewis have been great, very interesting similar stats. Starters have been excellent all year while the bench needs to contribute much more, especially the back-up guards. Both Danny Beckman & Hackert are completely overmatched on both ends of the floor and have really struggled. Dietz seems to have some potential but needs much more strength and experience. Mitchell will need to get more than 2 points per game from the bench if Hope expects to be in the mix to win the MIAA. A couple more games before conference play to figure things out.

Stevens Point 91  Hope 77

Hope was better today but trailed all game that I saw, pulled within 1 once or twice and 4 with 3 and change to go, Nate Dodge hit 2 straight threes in part of a personal 14 straight point stretch to push the Pointers ahead for good.  Dodge finished with 42 on 10-13 shooting from beyond the arc.

Beckman 21, Hawkins 17, Ray 17

Tough weekend for Hope - first game was very sloppy in a route and 2nd was competitive yet defensively very poor. Too many open looks and easy threes. Theme remains that Hope's undersized guards simply haven't been able to slow down good guards with any size (Marietta, CS, UWPV & UWSP). Both Dante & Jason at 5'10 have quickness & strength to compete defensively but Riley & Danny Beckman at 5'9 155 are both very small and light and have little impact defensively. Guards shoot right over them and play right through them on both ends of the court. There has also been a lack of consistent outside shooting to give Jason & Dante room to operate. Dante has really struggled in the half court sets with no spacing for drives or penetration. Fortunately, Teddy Ray has started hitting some threes and Dennis & Rob keep improving despite limited touches. It will be interesting to see who steps up from the young bigs. Good news is the next game is in Florida on December 19th giving the team some time to figure things out and improve - conference starts soon. Go Hope!

wots is that Hope's Dante Hawkins will be back sooner rather than later.  Maybe even next Tuesday?
My wife ran into Dante on campus and asked him about his hand. He said his x-ray showed no break, he's practicing this week with no contact, and he is expecting to play Tuesday against Grace Bible.
It will be great to see Hope at full strength especially if Dante (hand) & Zandstra (Broken Collar Bone) can both return at full strength. The guards with Jason, Dante, Lewis & Zandstra will be very versatile and deep and hopefully provide a little more consistent shooting and defense. If the bigs - Towns, Granger, Ray & McGiveny can continue to contribute along with the others, Hope should be solid and should be near the top of the MIAA. Looking forward to the league competition soon. HK

This is what I've been able to piece together so far of Hope's schedule from other teams schedules...

17-Nov      @ Marietta                           (Great Lakes Invitational)
18-Nov      St. John Fisher @ Marietta   (Great Lakes Invitational)
24-Nov      Cornerstone or Aquinas @ Aquinas   (GR Hall of Fame)
25-Nov      Cornerstone or Aquinas @ Aquinas   (GR Hall of Fame)
1 or 2-Dec        OPEN (maybe UWRF if last year was the front end of a home/away deal)
5-Dec    GRACE BIBLE
8-Dec        @ UW Platteville
9-Dec        @ UW Stevens Point
19-Dec     St. Vincent        (RDV Sportsplex, Orlando)
21-Dec     Baldwin Wallace (RDV Sportsplex, Orlando)
29-Dec      Mt. Union          (Russ DeVette)
30-Dec      John Carroll       (Russ DeVette)
3-Jan        Trine
6-Jan        @ Kzoo
10-Jan      Calvin
13-Jan      @ Adrian
17-Jan      Alma
20-Jan      @ Olivet
24-Jan      @ Albion
27-Jan      @ Trine
31-Jan      Kzoo
3-Feb        @ Calvin
7-Feb        Adrian
10-Feb      @ Alma
14-Feb      Olivet
17-Feb      Albion

Final non-conference game for Hope is filled, they'll host Grace Bible on Dec 5.  You might note a lack of home games in the non-conference, just 3.

Overall a very good and challenging schedule for what should be a mostly inexperienced Hope squad.
Agree - that Hope will be inexperienced but should be solid especially with Hawkins & Beckman playing together. A little undersized but possibly the best backcourt in the MIAA. These two will be fun to watch - both are gym rats & have played great together in the summer league. Add in Teddy Ray, Towns, Luke Dreyer, Matt Zandstra & some help from the other bigs (Gamm & McGiveny) they might be quite good again. MIAA will be very competitive. HK

Thanks for the update on the new players and player movement and to Scottiedawg for maintaining the ongoing list of players. Interesting to see who will be attending where.

Did Jason sit out a year because of D3 or MIAA rules or to consider his options and focus on his studies?

As a Senior student next year at Hope will he have Junior eligibility? Interesting to see if he plays 1 or 2 years at Hope? With Dante & Jason next year that is an outstanding backcourt.

Also, I thought for D3 you were able to transfer to another D3 and play immediately? The rules differ at the D1, D2 & D3 levels.

Does anyone have any new insight on the Beckman brothers - Jason & Danny? Where do they plan on playing next year 2017-18?
he is staying at hope

So Jason is staying at Hope - what about his brother Danny who was at IMG prep school?

Hope Starters: (lot of opportunity)

Highly doubtful that either Lewis or McGivney will start - Riley Lewis is very small & light (5'10'' 150) and will probably be a low minute sub as a sophomore and maybe a little more in his junior or senior year & McGivney will be a backup 4/5 for Towns. Coach Mitchell needs versatile & strong players that play multiple positions on offense and are able to switch and play defense. Neither Lewis or McGivney have that versatility especially on the defensive end. Calvin beat Hope twice with depth and size & weight at almost every position and Hope is smaller next year. Calvin will be solid and will have size and strength at almost all positions again - Hope will need to be bigger and stronger to beat them next year.

Look for Hawkins (PG) & Towns (F/C) to be the locks to start and possibly Teddy Ray as a stretch 4. There will be battles for the remaining positions (2 & 3) and the other three rotation positions by Matt Zandstra JV 21 ppg 65 threes (6'2 175) & FR Sam Tilden (6'3 185) & FR Max Gaishan (6'7 smooth shooting lefty) along with possibly McGivney & Ritsema & Smith & Morrison. Summer development will be huge for Hope but the team should still be very competitive and by mid-season will be very good again. Hawkins may be a D3 All-American.

HS v D3 - another factor is that some of the current MIAA players right now if they were this size and this good & were only 18 years old would probably be D1 recruits.

As an example - Hope players: Hawkins, Stuive & Blackledge all would probably be considered low level D1 recruits, if they had their current skill set & size. They could be bench players at a D2 or D1 school. Look at guys like Spike Albrecht - he played at Michigan (now Purdue) and would be excellent in the MIAA but wouldn't be amazing in D3 or D2. A lot has to do with the program and the needs of the team.

That said, 3 current high level D1 recruits in HS would probably win most of the games while 18 year old mid-level to low-level D1 recruits would probably lose.
