Maineman, one of the Bates parents spoke to the refs and the ref said it was an inadvertent whistle. We are still confused.
Midhoops and Vandy, as a father of a Bates player, this was the main topic of out post game tailgate. Hall told the players he would rather go for a win than a tie. Apparently, he didn't figure out even if he missed the 2 pointer, he would still need a FG to at least win/tie.
Here is his tweet after the game: Never chase points, it's a sign of desperation! Believe in your ability to play a full game.

Rookie HCOF mistake...

What HCOF Hall should have tweeted is "I screwed up...that's on me and won't happen again...my job as HCOF is to put our players in a position to be able to win".

.... and HCOF Hall continues to insist that he made the right decision. Not only a rookie mistake but an extreme case of arrogance.  Something about not wanting to lose the momentum. He has to be the only person at Middlebury or watching on the web that came to that conclusion. It has to be tough when your players are left scratching their heads. We can't make this stuff up. He might want to grab a beer with the Titan's coach who did him one better and not only embarrassed himself in one country with a stupid PAT decision but managed to do it in two countries!

Can anyone explain why Bates went for a PAT when trailing by 2 with a few minutes left?  Hell of an effort by the Bobcats.  The players deserved a chance to tie it.

I think that question was asked by just about everyone in the stadium. Just makes no sense whatsoever. If you are down by 1 due to a missed extra point and have blown two of your timeouts then why not put yourself in a position to tie the game because the result is the same if you miss the 2 point conversion... down by 2 or vs down by 1 with the PAT. You are either tied or win with a FG. Your D has shut down Midd the entire second half. You also have to ask yourself why not go for two the TD before this TD. A little bigger gamble but since he did not take it the last TD should have been a no-brainer. Coach Hall first stint as a HC so have to give him the benefit of the doubt and hope that he reevaluates this decision and learns from it. He is the right choice for Bates and given time and support will create a winning program.

What was impressive is that Bates finally put together a complete game and really came within a point of knocking off Midd. If they can do this the rest of the way then they might be able to win out and position themselves well for next year when Hall can finally recruit players that complement his system.

Cross country booty call.  Happy for Mark and his wife, and for all the boys like my son, who had the chance to play for him.  He may not have been the winningest coach in the CAC, but the boys learned a lot of valuable life lessons from him.  In the end, discipline and accountability will serve them much better than a couple of extra W's.  We will never know how much of his record was due to Admissions (non) support, budget restrictions (inability to pay his AC's a competitive wage) or other factors.

For the sake of future Bobcats (Bates had its Admitted Students Day this weekend) I hope new(ish) AD is up to some big time coaching recruiting in a very short time frame.  Brendan Costa is a very talented young QB, and it would be a shame to lose him and the other great young players if Fein can't land a qualified HC on very short notice.  Tough position for a young AD to be placed in.

The timing is terrible. Do you think that April is the time to recruit a qualified long term Head Coach. With the shortened 2 week training camp before the season starts and the team scattered for the summer how can you even think of changing offense and defense schemes. This is quite unfair to the players for sure. Yes Harriman was a class act. Every Bates player benefitted from him being their coach. This is not going to be a fun few months in Lewiston.

Your comment presupposes they are just starting the process now.  Perhaps they have already identified the next HC, or have whittled down the options to a couple of finalists.  It would be a wily move to give the appearance that Harridan was returning so as not to disrupt the 2022 recruiting class, with both Coach and AD agreeing to make this announcement after the recruits were tied up.

Maybe AD Fein is 2 steps ahead of us all.
'

Wishful thinking. I suspect that AD Fein is 3 steps behind us all. Making a move like this at this point without being 2 steps ahead is not only foolish but malpractice for an AD. I suspect that we will soon find out.

Just want to say that I don't recall any bad behavior by Trinity in their game against Hamilton.  And Hamilton had them down 13-0 at one point.  They rolled up the points in the second half, but not egregiously, as I recall.  Their whole stadium vibe is obnoxious, what with charging for admission, and those annoying highlight clips on the scoreboard.  But the players seemed to be fine in their behavior.  Whereas there are some from the little three who really behave poorly, in my experience.  The Trinity parents are not so great, screaming for more offense and more defense right down to the last second of a 41-13 game.  But, hey, parents are parents.

Hamiltonian - The Trinity coach showed class against Colby this year. They were knocking on the door for another scored (I think inside the 5 yard line) with time running out and they took a knee. So the Bates situation must have been personal for some reason.  As for the admission charge, my guess it is to keep some people out that they think may pose problems because that area is pretty bad. Just my guess.

Perhaps the Trinity Coach just realized how foolish his post game speech justifying his poor sportsmanship was. I suspect that a guy that gives an explanation like that does not really change his behavior so maybe he was simply acting like Buddy Ryan when he threw that touchdown pass against Tom Landry's Cowboys after taking a knee on the previous play because he was pissed that Landry actually tried to win with his team of replacement players during the strike. The only real difference that I can see is that the Trinity coach was not as creative as Buddy and did not take a knee on the previous play!

Joebag-
Thanks for weighing in with Devanneys side of the story. No rfelection at all on you Joe but
Let me make the facts known. Bates had 7 healthy guys on the DL and they were all rotated  in and out for the entire second half with the game out of hand. Harriman emptied his bench. Bates is not 3 or 4 deep like the mighty Bantams with a 65 man roster and Devanney knows that well.

I gave Devanney an earful following the game and had some regrets thinking I let
my temper get the better of me as we drove home. Bates got their ass kicked like I haven't seen in a long time and I was thinking I should have bit my tongue.

However, after hearing Devaaney's spin on the whole thing I'm glad I did.

In 40 years of NESCAC football that the most classless display I have seen and Devanneys "justification" is a joke.

Like I said. I did not agree, but I do not get a vote.
I would have taken a knee.

Devaney is real intense dude, but I am happy my son is part of his program and having a chance to make an impact on the team this year. You had every right to get in his grill on this and should not feel any regret.

I have first hand knowledge of several stories about his compassion WRT making a difference in some of his players lives. He is the difference maker in this program. One thing I can tell you about this guy is that he is sticking his neck out to change the trajectories of many young men.

With all of this said, I am pretty sure he regrets not taking a knee on the last play of the game last Saturday.

This is my first post and this classless act by the Trinity coach is what brought it out. I too was in the stands and was just amazed. I had a Trinity parent tell me that I don't know what is happening on the other side and this was the one opportunity for some third stringer to score a TD. What is amazing is how people try to justify such a classless act. Glad you had the guts to get in his grill because it was one of the most disgusting rub it in your face acts that I have seen in my several years of watching NESCAC football. What you failed to point out is that he showed class when they were up 45-0 or so at halftime by kneeling down for the last two plays to run the clock out so this was clearly a deliberate, ill-advised and classless act by the coach. He should be ashamed of himself and so should every parent on his sideline. Dispense with the back patting about how he is making differences in the kids lives because every coach makes a difference in one way or another. What difference did he make in their lives by this BS demonstration of pettiness.  Not positive. And as you have aptly pointed out Bates does not go 4 deep and Harriman was rotating his players throughout the game.
