Like the talk a while ago regarding Jordan Robinson being "only" D3, why is Carthage's Brad Perry at a D3 school?  He's listed at 6'11" and has some beef.  He is currently averaging 11 ppg and nearly 7 rpg while getting 21 mpg.  He couldn't have been a sleeper while attending Maine South (IL).

He is a very talented player so, in no means am I trying to take anything away from him. In my eyes he just lacks the athleticism and condition to play at a higher level. The D3 game is very much a half court game which suits his style of play more so than that of a D1 or even D2 school. He has the potential (which is starting to come to fruition now) to be a very effective D3 center.

Chicago blows out NCC preseason --> NCC beats IWU --> IWU blows out Chicago

D3 basketball is so confusing.

I wish I knew what was going on with NCC. Those wins over teams like Illinois Wesleyan and decent Aurora/Benedictine teams are the only thing keeping the Cardinals in the rankings. Those losses, all at home, where they've looked awful kind of scream that they're a team that doesn't belong in the Top 25. Of course, we've got the mitigating factor of Connor Raridon being out, but it's still alarming.

Correct me if I am wrong but, Connor played in all of the losses...

The first two, yes.  The third one, no.

Your'e 100% right I forgot RM

NCC pulls out a 94-91 double OT win over # 19 Wartburg in Honolulu!!  :)

Connor who? LOL!  ;)

I think they're in Florida - What a win by the cards, top 25 win without an all-conference level player!

Quote from: AndOne on December 14, 2016, 01:39:00 AM5. It's natural for all us fans to promote our team to the fullest extent possible, myself included. It's also natural for opposing fans to label a valid explanation as to what might be adversely effecting another team as an excuse no matter how close to the team a reporter might be, or how accurate his information and/or analysis is. Accordingly, many will think this hocus pocus, but here goes. As I said, think what you want. But before you laugh too loud, ask Greg Sager who is closer to the team and likely to know what's going on. As you probably know, NCC is on trimesters. First term finals were the Mon-Wed before Thanksgiving. Holiday vacation began 11/24 and runs until 1/3/17. Ever since Thanksgiving, which is almost 3 weeks now, the NCC kids have had no regular schedule. No classes that everyone else was still going to, nothing really that they have had to do most days except practice. Lots of time to kill, and to sit around being bored. If you know anything about college age kids, you know most of them respond and preform better in at least a semi-structured enviorment. As Yogi said, you can look it up. As much as I have tried to "explain" things, the fact is the Cardinals have had some lackluster performances (see Platteville, Carthage, AND Millikin). While UWP and CC played very well and deserved their victories, knowing the team as well as I do, I can't help but think part of their sleepwalking during the 2 losses and even the win over MU, was due to so much time, so little to do.

Take a step into the spin-zone here - No classes = more free time, more free time = more gym time, more gym time = better players, better players = more wins.

At least I am thinking that is how Coach Raridon likes to draw it up however, as we all know college students are easily distracted and sometimes do what they want instead of doing what is in the best interest for themselves/ their team so, its definitely understandable to see where you are coming from with that post. I just hope the players can make the best of their time away from class! Time will tell....

Raridon's injury is a tough loss for North Central, to say the least. I don't want to see the Cardinals succeed in January and February, of course, because they're an obstacle to NPU. But I also don't like to see anybody get injured, and I'd much rather have the Vikings beat a full-strength foe than one that's missing a key component.

As Mark said, nobody who roots for another team is going to shed any tears for the Cardinals. But I also wouldn't take them lightly. Even without Raridon, that's still a very solid team -- probably not a Top 15 team, but a very solid team, nonetheless, and one that's capable of winning in any CCIW gym on any given night. The rest of the teams in the league need to go full-out to take care of business against NCC; otherwise, if Raridon returns to the Cards in late January, he might find himself back in the lineup of a team that's still contending for a CCIW title.

Losing Fehrle will certainly hurt as well, but Bronec arrived last year with his own amount of hype. This is his chance to live up to it. Cappelletti and Chambers, who weren't hyped, look like they belong in a CCIW rotation. They're a key reason why I think that NCC isn't going to go away, even with Raridon out.

However, I'm not buying into the "too much free time" thing. That sounds more like an excuse than an explanation. First of all, aren't any of the Cardinals taking D-Term classes? Second, NCC's got plenty of veterans on the roster. Those veterans should be well aware of the rhythm of the school year at NCC, and accordingly should not only know how to manage that rhythm but how to be on top of their younger teammates who find themselves with a surplus of free time. Third, this smacks of a "get out of jail free" card that North Central fans could use every year at their discretion if their team is not performing well in late November and/or December, whereas it would never be brought up if the team is performing successfully. And, fourth, there are four CCIW schools that have a 4-1-4 academic calendar that features an optional J-term in January, paralleling North Central's D-term. In the close to two decades that this board has been around, none of the fans of those other schools have ever put forward the assertion that a lull in the personal academic calendars of their teams' players has hampered their performance on the court in January.

Mr. Greg = the excuse police - NOT UP IN HERE!!!

North Central leads Albion at the half, 32-26, but the noteworthy thing about this game is that Connor Raridon is sitting on the bench in street clothes with what appears to be either a cast or a wrap on his shooting hand.

Also, I noticed that Sam Fehrle is no longer on the NCC roster.

Sam has been ruled academically ineligible for the season, hopefully the young man can get back on track to graduate, priorities!

I suppose let the speculation begin? How long is an injury like a broken hand usually keep a basketball player out? A month, two months, the season? Then we're talking about redshirting? Well, expensive school? Probably can't afford another year? Who knows? It will be interesting as this progresses what the details will be.

Young Raridon broke his middle finger on his shooting hand and will be out about 4 weeks (Depending on feel). The injury occurred while trying to take a charge in the Milikin game.

So far it looks like the young Cards had a good response!

This injury should give a few bench players and young guys a chance to showcase their skills and gain a little experience.

Don't paint with too broad a brush as it relates to AAU coaches.  Most attempt to do what the player and parents want.  Don't feel slighted but almost every kid that plays D3 that I come across feels, at the beginning, as if they settled or somehow missed out on playing at a higher level.  I can also say that four years later most see it differently than they did as a 17 or 18 year old.   Most parents are very much like their kids.  They want D1, sometimes as much or more than the player.  It's pretty startling to be a part of the process. What I tell kids is that I will do whatever I can to get them where they want to be, while at the same time being as honest as I can with the reality of their circumstances.  We discuss academics, etc., but all the kid hears is level.  I have had kids go D1 having never been on the campus or spending more than 5 minutes with the coach.  It's scary.  I tell my kids all the time don't make a decision that has 40 year implications for 40 minutes of Twitter glory, but it doesn't help.

Right now I have about 30+ kids playing college ball on all levels (only 1 in D2).  Even when kids go D3 about half of them reach out and ask is there a way to still go D1.  Then when the season starts, ball is ball.

One of the reasons D3 is so strong in IL is because the 13 D1 schools seem to be pretty clueless about kids in their own backyard.   Just got one of my kids to Houston, final schools were UAB, Whichita St. & W. Virginia.  Never received a single call from a D1 in IL.  Kid would have loved to stay closer to home never got the chance.

As it relates to Bob/Windycity, if he says he got a kid an offer, he did.  Bob no longer coaches and truly just helps kids who are often overlooked... and he asks for nothing.  There are actually more people who just are in it for the kids in AAU than most know.  The shoe company teams get the pub, but programs like mine, Mercury Elite and countless others do a lot for kids on and off the court.  And yes our first conversations with kids are about D1 and the prospects of playing at the highest college level.  This conversation is unavoidable because for most kids it's the main reason they play AAU.

Occasionally both the kids and the parents get it.  One of my current D3s received a D1 offer right before the start of school,  tough call, because the kid could easily play D1.  But the family made a decision and locked in with the D3.

Finally, this whole issue about D3s being able to play D1 is silly.  Of course there are many kids on all levels who could contribute on D1. In my humble estimation after doing this for almost 30 years it works like this....  There are about 900 D1 scholarships each year.  The first 600 are easy calls, height, athleticism, connections, etc...  But there are probably a couple thousand kids that are talented enough for the last 100-200 scholarships.   That's where folks like Bob come into play to get your kid seen with those coaches as they give out those last few scholarships.  Then it becomes need and fit.  Coach may be looking for a shooter, defender or a GPA booster, you just never know.  A couple of my D1s are clear cut D1s and doing great.  I have some who would have the same struggles they are having at D1 if they played D3.   My D1s currently play at Louisville, IUPUI, Albany, SIUe, Chicago St., Incarnate Word, and a couple of other places that escape me.  A round robin of my D3s, D1s and JuCos would be fun to watch.  D3s would have edge shooting, D1s would have edge athletically, JuCos would have the most "game".  Take care....

I think that is a pretty fair assessment of the recruiting scene in the Chicagoland area.

Another issue I think that is facing the recruitment of high school players is their high school coaches lack of reach. I think there has been a large shift in the past 10-15 years in which, high school coaches are losing connections/ reach (bar major hs programs) with college programs. In these cases, AAU allows the athletes a vessel to reach college coaches of all levels through showcases, tournaments, work outs.

There are a lot of players in the Chicago land who could play in the CCIW that do not end up playing college athletics because of lack of visibility!

I think HAL needs  tune-up. He ranks NPU 4th and IWU 20th and then says IWU will beat NPU.  ???

Cant be wrong if you guess both.... Good move on HAL's part  ;D

Quote from: D3_Commenter on December 06, 2016, 11:42:58 AMI have a feeling that this game will come down to perimeter shooting as Sorenson will likely have to stretch the floor against the larger Perry. Interesting note though, Perry is only playing about 20 minutes a game where as Sorenson is at about 32 so, S will see a good amount of action with a different match up (barring foul trouble).

Bosko's using a four-man rotation at the two big-man spots, with Mike Stevenson (his most experienced player) and talented freshmen Kienen Baltimore and Reggie Banks sharing time with Perry. I'm not sure if Perry is being restricted to 21 mpg because he weighs 285 lbs. (albeit on a 6'11 frame) and can't handle more than half a game, conditioning-wise, or if it's because Bosko needs to make sure that Baltimore and Banks are getting enough developmental time as well, while Stevenson ensures a steady presence on the floor.

Banks, who is 6'7, 235, is the one who is rotating the most with Perry at the center spot. It's therefore likely that Banks will be the guy who is guarding Sorenson, and vice-versa, when Perry is not in the game. Banks has the size and the quickness to match up with Sorenson, but he doesn't have the experience. Perry's got the size, but I think that he'll get exposed by Sorenson when the NCC star steps out to the perimeter and looks to shoot long-distance jumpers.

If that is the case I would not be surprised to see a lot of zone; the Bosco 2-3
