February 16, 2025, 11:31:58 AMQuote from: jumbomumbo on February 16, 2025, 11:10:55 AMYeah, kids famously hate being in college towns. Plus, if you're playing high-level basketball and going to school, there's not a whole lot of time to be out on the town wherever you are.Quote from: WashedUp1 on February 16, 2025, 10:28:45 AMNESCAC ends the year 55-55 in league play. Really hope they can turn it around headed into the post-season and better represent the talent of the league in the tournament [/sarcasm]
Maine teams go 6-24 in NESCAC.
Vermont team went 3-7
Massachusetts teams went 16-14 almost entirely thanks to Tufts, Boston's NESCAC school which should draw the top recruits year after year.
New York team went 7-3
Connecticut teams went 23-7.
I do think tufts will eventually consistently get the top recruits but for now Wesleyan and Trinity have a lot of momentum and will be able to recruit well.
Coach Linton got his 100th career win over Bates last night. Linton is 74-30 with Tufts. A very very impressive record considering the NESCAC is consistently a top 3 conference in the country, and given that NESCAC teams only play each other once, we have to find more non conference opponents, and Tufts has consistently had the toughest non conference schedule out of NESCAC teams. I believe the previous coach (still love him) was sub .500 in over 30 years with Tufts. Special things happening in Medford and if you are a recruit reading this trust me you want to be returning to the Boston metro area after a long NESCAC weekend, not some rural cow town.

January 05, 2025, 04:48:28 PMQuote from: midrangepullup on January 05, 2025, 03:42:28 PMMy wife and I have two solid incomes - not wealthy but by no means poor - and our son is a Nescac freshman paying less than 20% list price. Those schools have a lot of money to dole out. Not saying it wouldn't still be a stretch for many people, but those published tuition/room/board figures really don't apply to most people.Quote from: jumbomumbo on January 05, 2025, 03:23:50 PMJust a thought. If NESCAC tuition prices are currently $95k per year, and grow at a 4% annual rate, tuition will be $250k, and over $1M just for a family to send one athlete to the NESCAC. I think it is a ticking time bomb, and something NESCAC coaches and athletic directors will have to address in the coming decades. Thinking this because it is becoming a no brainer for top level NESCAC kids to transfer for scholarships if available.
I do think this is a bit hyperbole. I would say the average kids actually pay is in 35-50 range with 'merit' scholarships. Price is definitely is a consideration/issue for nescac athletics. However to say people will be paying 1M for a nescac education in the next 20 years seems somewhat outlandish to me.

I have no knowledge at all about Nieves' decision process or offers he may have received, but I am sure there are countless basketball players every year who are seduced by the idea of going D1, get there and are bit players for their career, and regret not going D3 and getting big minutes.

December 18, 2024, 09:34:18 PMQuote from: nescac1 on December 18, 2024, 10:40:56 AMTufts:Ricardo Nieves is super athletic and a lockdown defender. I've seen him many times at Williston and figured he'd end up at a D1.
Deacon Barratta, 6'6 W, Phoenixville (PA)
Ian Randall, 7'0 F, Hotchkiss
Ricardo Nieves, 6'4 G, Williston Northampton
Wesleyan:
Jalaan Watson, 5'10 G, Olathe North (KS)
Williams:
Solomon Marshall, 5'10 G, Phillips Andover
Khalil Carlson, 6'4 W, Darrow School
Ty Kuehl, 6'6 W, Parkway West (Missouri)
Very nice early classes for Williams, Amherst, and Tufts. Amherst desperately needs a huge and impactful class with only five underclassmen on the roster, only two of whom are currently regular rotation players. With the bigs they lose, Hempfling may need to start right away. Tufts keeps adding size, Randall can develop behind Bernstein for a year, and Baratta looks like an early-impact wing scorer in the Thoerner mold.
For Williams, Carlson is a local player who deferred so he could attend prep school for a game, he should have a big fan base from the area. Marshall looks like a complete guard who can really score it, with him plus Belcher (and one more year of Alex Lee), the Ephs should have a quick penetrating guard group who can also shoot at the point of attack for years to come. Kuehl, a wing shooter, has great bloodlines - both his father and uncle were 1000 point scorers for Illinois Wesleyan, and his brother is a highly regarded sophomore there too, so definitely impressive that the Ephs stole him away from IWU.
Sherron Woodberry and Jaalan Watson are high school rivals in Kansas and will continue that rivalry in the Little 3. Woodberry was second-team all league last year, and Watson first team. Watson looks like an incredibly fun player to watch, he is explosive and dunks with ease even at 5'9, who should step in for Nicky Johnson, possibly right away:

NESCAC teams, including Midd, have had a lot of success with Jersey players and Midd went to the well twice. Fuerbacher looks like a gritty player and a good fit for a Jeff Brown team. Colby after years of focusing on the perimeter brings in another post player to bolster the paint after finally bringing in some big guys this year as well.

Region 1 football (New England-ish) / Re: FB: New England Small College Athletic Conference
October 26, 2024, 04:05:13 PMQuote from: MHBurnell on October 26, 2024, 10:37:46 AMAgree with much of JeffFan's analysis of Amherst FB and causes for its current challenges (and hope for the future). I believe the crux of the matter centers on the direction of the former president and current admission director hired during her tenure. The current AD was a successful Amherst OC (and head softball coach), so presumably he well understood the NESCAC FB recruiting and coaching challenges and how to successfully manage them.I, for one, have no problem at all seeing Amherst football in the bottom third of the league for a while.
Wasn't aware of the size of the decline of older alumni giving but it aligns with my experience speaking to fellow alumni. The former president had an agenda for the College that has impacted all areas of it. Of course athletics would be impacted; in some ways this has been a positive, for others (more "traditional" sports?) it appears to have been less positive. And obviously for recruiting 17-18 year olds, recent results will matter perhaps more than they should.
Amherst FB has historically has had good and bad 10-15 year runs. Like the past, I hope/expect things will be better in the (not-too-distant) future.

While we wait for more preseason news to trickle out, how about a little fun; who has the best throwback logo in the NESCAC?
Hamilton didn't even try......

March 03, 2023, 10:37:04 AMQuote from: JEFFFAN on March 03, 2023, 10:13:12 AMWelcome to what life is like for most of the NESCAC.
I wonder when the last time was that Amherst was not represented on either the first or second team All-NESCAC teams? Deservedly so this year, of course, but has to have been a long time.
Only one person on the NESCAC Women's team as well - second team sophomore. And an awful football team ...
Something bad in the water up there in Amherst! Or the admissions office ...

I'm not shocked Hamilton won this weekend - I could've seen almost any team in the tournament winning - but I am pretty surprised that they kind of rolled to the championship after the Bates game. The NESCAC was so evenly spread this season. Hopefully at least one or two teams can make a nice run in the NCAAs.

I'm not sure if this is the top 10 but Williams x2, Middlebury, Rowan, and Swarthmore is 5 games against teams that were all in the top 10 of the seeding reveal last week.

Tuned in for second half of Trinity/Williams and Trinity is losing the second half 31-7. Their offense has been tough to watch, to put it mildly.

I don't recall a season where there's not a team in the top 8 I'd say I felt comfortable playing in the first round. What's the tiebreaker if Hamilton, Midd, Williams, and Wesleyan are all 7-3?
