Region 1 men's basketball / Re: NESCAC MBB

Sorry guys, good game, even if we win kinda ugly :)  (or if you're nice, you say we play a "traditional" game, heheh).  But even with Middlebury going down to our guys and Trinity crashing out, I'm sure Amherst by itself will ensure that the NESCAC has a fine tournament.   And who knows about Bowdoin -- maybe they can copy the runs their women's squad has made the past few years...  good luck.

Probably JC DeLass - he is very good.  On the other hand, WYSL is coming in scratchy on my computer, so I'm listening to WashU's radio, and it's cyrstal-clear but god-awful.  Constantly comparing guys to Allen Iverson and Reggie Miller, misstating what half it is, how many fouls people have, saying it's an entertaining night game (when they're playing at noon), etc.  Just horrific, even if these guys are students (which I sincerely hope they are, to be sounding this ridiculous)...

Papabear, nobody was trashing Bowdoin.  Only pointing out that Rochester isn't exactly garbage, and it would not at all be surprising if UR got another quality scalp this weekend.

You say they have three players with Final Four Experience the Polar bears have three with National Championship experience all starters.. Flaherty, Loonin, Cummings Who is going to stop Flaherty?? If you double her you will get beat by Anelauskus or Rubega off the bench..

Well, I'd try to stop Bowdoin by playing some zone.  From looking at their team stats, it looks like their guards are awful shooters (Loonin at .333 FG, .301 3PT and Cummings at .297 FG, .208 3PT).  So I'd load up the paint, maybe even a box-and-one or triangle-and-two to stop Flaherty and the other post players, force Bowdoin to shoot from the outside, and force the guards to shoot, which it looks like they don't do very well.  I'd even let Cummings shoot all day if she wants, not sure I'd even guard her; I'd double-up Flaherty instead and let the zone handle Cummings if necessary.

Good to see all the respect for Rochester...

So lets look at their resume.

Consider the top 30 of the Women's RPI (www.d3hoops.com/scoreboard/womensrpi07.htm):

Wins:
-vs. #5 NYU
-vs. #7 Scranton
-at  #11 Cortland State
-vs. #12 Brandeis
-vs. #22 Chicago
-(n) #26 St. Lawrence

And some more wins:
-at Medaille (23-5, AMCC conference champs, d3hoops.com #20)
-at Ithaca (Empire 8 conference champs)
-at Elmira (21-7, Empire 8 runner-ups)
-(n) Brockport State (22-8)

On top of that, they have three starters with Final Four experience (PG Emily Bango, SG Danielle Muller, SF Megan Krebbeks) and a key backup (F Emily Lyons) who's been there too.

No, there certainly can't be any chance they'd beat Bowdoin, let alone make the Final Four.  None at all....  :P

Hey guys, we're collecting previews for each team in the tourney on one of the multiregional boards. If I get them by Friday I may even be able to stick them in one document for people to peruse. A fun little tourney resource of sorts. We've got Chicago and Brandeis previews (thank you!), but would someone here be willing to do one for Wash U and Rochester too? Thanks!

University of Rochester Yellowjackets

18-7 Overall, 9-5 UAA (t-3rd)
How Earned Bid: Pool C

Wins vs. NCAA teams: Wash U, St. John Fisher, Brandeis
Losses vs. NCAA teams: Lake Erie, at Wash U, St. John Fisher, at Brandeis, at/vs Chicago

The 'Jackets are back in the tournament two years after reaching the NCAA championship game (winning @Amherst and vs. Calvin along the way), where they fell to WI-Stevens Point.  A number of key players return from that squad, including starters Jon Onyiriuka, Uche Ndubizu, Tim Brackney, and Jeff Juron.

Rochester is known for a methodical, grind-it-out, efficient halfcourt offense (lots of deadly three-point shooters as well as dunks and layups in the post), attacking the boards, and stingy defense.  They have a balanced game but don't score a ton, though they don't give up much either (opponents' 35% FG shooting).  Rochester plays a tough schedule (finishing #9 in the men's RPI as reported on the front page earlier in the week) in a tough league, and have plenty of tournament experience.  They are coached by veteran Mike Neer, who has an NCAA championship plus three Final Fours under his belt.

Starters:
F Jon Onyiriuka (6'7/230 Jr.) - 12 pts/8 reb/2 ast per game, 49% FG shooter
F Uche Ndubizu (6'6/245 Jr.) - 10 pts/7 reb/1 ast per game, 59% FG shooter
G/F Mike Chmielowiec (6'3/190 So.) - 13 pts/3 reb/2 ast per game, 44% 3PT shooter
G Tim Brackney (6'1/180 Sr.) - 11 pts/1 reb/2 ast per game, 42% 3PT, 80% FT shooter
G Jeff Juron (6'1/160 Jr.) - 9 pts/2 reb/4 ast per game, 83% FT shooter, 2:1 ast/TO ratio

Key Reserves:
F Eric Snider (6'7/215 Sr.) - 55% FG shooter
F Dan Millbrand (6'6/215 Jr.) - 46% FG shooter
G Rob Dominiak (6'3/165 Jr.) - 46% 3PT, 92% FT shooter
G Max Kaplan (6'0/170 So.) - 44% 3PT shooter, 2 ast/game in 13 min/game

go bombers, Idk why you praise UofR so much, yes they did murder fisher last time out.

Hmm, probably because U of R, as you noted, annihilated SJF 82-53 in their last matchup, on a neutral floor.  Plus, while Mike Neer may not be winning coach of the year awards, instead he's won a national championship and taken U of R to the NCAA Final Four in two of the last six years.

In those last six years, SJF had 5 wins in the NCAAs (Hamilton, Lebanon Valley, Norwich, and Utica x2).  None of those are impressive in the least.

In the same span, UR has had 9 wins in the NCAAs, beating teams including Williams, at Amherst, Calvin, and, yes, SJF.  They also beat up on Babson, Potsdam (right after that team crushed the famously overhyped 28-1 SJF squad), Brockport, Union, and Western Connecticut.

Of course, maybe SJF will actually show up in the tournament this year.  Maybe they'll beat UR.  But until then, it's silly to ask why UR gets more praise than SJF.  They've earned it on the court.

Wow, the newly posted D3 RPI formula sure likes the UAA:

http://www.d3hoops.com/scoreboard/mensrpi07.htm

4. Wash U
5. Brandeis
7. Chicago
9. Rochester
29. NYU

Yeah, and yet NYU gets totally shafted, and only one of our four top-10 teams are hosting their regional. Chicago has to play at #48 Aurora and Rochester (two final fours in the past six years) has to play at a team they outrank and destroyed 82-53 in their last game this season.  Silly.

I don't see what would be so spectacular about two wins for UR.  They already deserve to be #1 -- they are undefeated and knocked off previously unbeaten Brandeis, NYU, and Scranton, along with double-digit-win teams Medaille, Elmira, and Brockport.  A quick check shows they've beaten 9 teams with winning records.  A similar check shows 2 such wins for WashU.  The fact that WashU were good in 2000 doesn't make them any good right now.  As for Chicago, certainly a strong year for them, but after only a three point win over WashU at home, what makes them that much better?  For that matter, on what objective basis is Chicago any stronger than UR right now?

1. UR
2. Chicago
3. NYU
4. Brandeis
5. WashU

baselinejam, I wouldn't worry about Carroll's style of play if I were you...they learned a lesson about physical play today - Rochester took them to school, killed them on the boards and flat-out dominated them.

I noticed two technicals in a row on Carroll too, when they were down 35 or so.  And they got pounded by Rochester's bench players too....  basically all the stuff you were complaining about with W&L, Carroll got to experience it too.  So maybe that'll calm them down.

owen, that's true, however UR was playing that game without Gabe Perez, their starting PG and last night's leading scorer (16 pts) = but it still does go to show that the WIAC is pretty competitive.  I'm rooting hard for York http://discus.d3hoops.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif" ALT=":-)" BORDER=0>

yeah UR!

up next is Calvin?  Lets see what we can do..

Rochester 67, Potsdam 51.

UR led by 2 then ended the game on a huge run...

would have been even more of a blowout if UR actually hit its free throws, but they shot something like 57% from the floor

Rebounding was even...
