Great job Bear: Thanks for setting up yet another 127 Bell thread.

So, once again you can post your holy hand grenade video while enjoying your Zima while we enjoy a replay of the 116th game where DPU's best team ever came in at 9-0 and got waxed.  I'll take a monkey stomp over an end zone celebration any day and twice on Sunday.

Welcome to Bell week.  DePauw to hell, we'll get the bell.

Good video about the Monon Bell game.  Thanks to Ken Owens, DPU '82.  Shoulda been a Wabash guy....

If memory serves we haven't had that since Knott in the 99 game. I think this team is better than the 99 team and a big part is LT. I'm setting myself up for Old Takes Exposed but if Wabash falls short this weekend I'm guessing it won't be because of how LT does.

I think the defense will be an issue if we lose. I am confident that LT can put up 21+, but I'm not sure the defense can hold DePauw to 21 or less.

I am in agreement with CG18.  Given that the Dannies have their QB1 back in the line up, the game could turn into a shootout.  Our pass rush has been iffy at best all season and that, I fear, is our Achilles heal.   We will see on Saturday.

At Least They Called It On Themselves:

When creating the official Monon Bell game shirt for the DePauw student body, the graphic used by the designer of the shirt was the Liberty Bell, crack and all, and not the Monon Bell.  Having not had the Monon Bell on campus since 2016 and only once in the last 10 years, I guess we can forgive the designer for not having a clue what the real bell looks like.

https://thedepauw.com/dsg-shirts-have-depauw-securin-the-wrong-bell/

On a related note to previous posts bemoaning the lack of banter on this page, read a companion article in the same issue of The DePauw reference above entitled "Monon History".  Below is an extract of that article:

"The Monon Bell game used to be more than just a game.(bold is my add) The week preceding the annual contest has in the past included shared activities between the two schools, such as concerts, debates, an intramural all-star football game, an alumni football game the morning of the varsity contest and other events."

There is a lot of "used to be" things around this event, both from an alumni and campus standpoint.  Admittedly, times have changed and some of the activities held in the 70's, 80's, and 90's won't work anymore for various and sundry reasons.   IMHO, the leadership of both schools have stepped back from supporting events (and in some cases specifically rejecting opportunities) that would bring the the students and their respective alumni together.

As far as I know, the only collaborative event associated with the Monon Bell game is the annual (now in its 7th year) relay of the game ball from the visiting to home school on the Friday before the game.  This is done by the Phi Delts of both schools to raise money for ALS (Lou Gerhig was a Phi Delt from Columbia).

That being said....
DePauw to hell, we'll keep the Bell.

IMHO, permanent visitor stands is the ultimate in wasted spend.  The cost per use of those seats would be astronomical given the few times that visiting teams fill those stands.   My hope is that the AD assesses the need for the number of visiting stands each season based on our schedule and then rents them accordingly.  Other than Monon Bell and the odd "big" game against Witt, those stands never have more than a hundred people in them (and they hold 1500).   If we end up adding a local college to our schedule (like Rose next year), the seating can easily be adjusted through one-time rentals.  Lots cheaper than taking up valuable real estate between the track and the chapel.

Yes - it decreases the fixed capacity through the elimination of the seating on the visitor's side of the field.  My understanding is that the capacity on the Wabash side will be similar to that of today.   Further, my understanding is that Wabash will set up temporary stands on the visitor side during the season much like is done at other venues.  There is no desire to mix the streams, such as at  Witt.  The Monon Bell game already requires additional seating so we will simply be adding more stands than had been required in the past.

Here are the Wabash game notes for tomorrow's game with Ohio Wesleyan.  Looks like the weather is going to cooperate with a glorious fall day.  Safe travels to those making the trek to Crawfordsville.

Below is the link to the Wabash game notes for tomorrow's Homecoming game with Denison.  Going to be an usually warm day for late September.  This is Wabash's first home game of the year so the tailgating will be especially fun.

Here we go with week 2. Great work by the WIAC in week one. Lets see what we can do in week two!

Stevens Point vs Wabash- Point is the one team that I know very little about. If someone on this board could fill me or us in that would be great. Wabash in the past has been a good football team. It was a decent game last year. I think Wabash pulls an upset here 28-24

Best of luck to WIAC this week!

Wabash is starting late out of the gate with no game in week #1.  Not sure if a Wabash win would be an upset per se given their national ranking, but a win on the road versus a WIAC team would be considered a big win in the eyes of Wabash supporters.  Wabash has a lot of defensive gaps to fill but returns a strong running game.  Point used both QBs in a what looks to have been a close contest on the road at John Carroll. If Point can get its passing game going (which in my opinion has been Wabash's historical defensive weakness), the game will be a toss-up.   In the NCAC Pick'em, Wally has Wabash as a double-digit favorite.  I am going to take the points and hope that Wabash ends up with a well-earned road win.  Wish I was making the trip to Wisconsin this weekend but will be doing the live-stream instead.

I think this is a little overstated. Wabash should win the game, and their pass defense has been "bad" because their run D is among the best in the country for a 7 year stretch here.

Wabash only loses 2 starters on defense. They return all 3 starting LBs and all 4 DBs...

Wabash also has a transfer in by the name on the DL of David Marsh. Transfer in from Miami (OH). I think this defense is better than you give it credit for.

Not to mention two 1,000 yard rushers. A competent QB, and a BIG veteran line.

In 20 hours I might be eating my words but I think you're a little low on them.

No, their pass defense has been bad, not just "not as good as the run d".  I take no pleasure in seeing my doubts realized.  I am sure there will lots more shared on the NCAC board this week. Get ready for "Over Reaction Monday" :o

Here at last, here at last, thank God almighty, the game notes are here at last.  Waiting an extra week for the season to start has made this a long week.  Safe travels to those making the trek to UW-SP. The weather forecast looks like it will be a great day for football.

Below are Wabash's game notes for this weekend's game at UW - Stevens Point.

Found this tidbit on the MIAC board about attendance at DIII football games.  For what it is worth, Wabash is in the top 10.  However, I trust these numbers as much as I do when playing liars poker.  Regardless, something to share as we begin the ramp up to another season.

Below are the Wabash College game notes for the 125th Monon Bell Classic.   It is going to be a chilly day in Crawfordsville, which means we won't need ice to keep the kegs cold.

The DePauw game notes are here.  It is obvious that Dan Quayle did not edit this document as "potato" is spelled correctly.

Kudos (and thanks) to Adam Turner for his well-written, sensitive piece on Wabash football in the aftermath of the Evan Hansen tragedy.  Adam sums up the emotional turmoil on the team and in the coaching staff as the Little Giants celebrate Evan's life while dealing with their own raw feelings.
I'll add this:  do you want some BBQ sauce with your crow, sigma one?  I've been sometimes critical of Wabash's play and of the staff's effectiveness.  All things considered--again nicely presented in Adam's column--this has in all sorts of ways been a remarkable season so far as the team has worked through their grief and continued to hold together.   Whatever happens in the next two games Wabash should be proud of its young men and coaches for their performance under the most trying circumstances.

Like Sigma One, I too have to recognize that I did not appreciate the impact of the events surrounding the loss of Evan Hansen.  The team definitely performed differently than in their first two games with the Denison game being their nadir.  At that point, I thought we had seen a permanent shift in the quality of Wabash football.  I was wrong and I am proud that the coaches and team pulled themselves together in such a fashion.  An awesome win at Witt was backed up by a dominating performance vs BJ and the Gators.  A few weeks ago, I thought we would be lucky to beat the Dannies for the Bell and mid-pack pride.  Now, it looks like the Dannies are headed for a big can of whoop ass.
