Washington U should be red, they (barely) picked up their third loss on Saturday.

New Regional Rankings are out:

   Region 6                         D3   All   SOS
   1   Linfield                     8-0   8-0   .576
   2   Bethel                      8-1   8-1   .601
   3   St. John's                  8-1   8-1   .625
   4   UW-Whitewater            7-2   7-2   .663
   5   UW-La Crosse               6-1   8-1   .560
   6   UW-Platteville               5-3   5-4   .595
   7   Claremont-Mudd-Scripps   7-1   7-1   .430

https://d3football.com/playoffs/2022/second-regional-ranking

So... The winner of BU/SJU moves to second and the loser falls behind the WIAC teams.  It looks like Region 6 will get two at-large bids, depending on how the other Region's auto-bids work out.  But the middle of the Region 6 ranking looks to my eyeball to be the strongest of the six regions by a long way.

The games:

1. Linfield plays L&C.  Linfield will retain top rank.  Autobid.
2. SJU against BU.  I pick SJU to win and move up to the second spot.  Autobid.

The WIAC makes things tricky from here.

3. UWW creams UWSP but their SOS takes a beating.  They will still be the first at-large team with an SOS well over .6
4. UWLC beats UWP to win the conference but will still be ranked behind UWW because of SOS.  Autobid
5. BU will fall to here because two losses but their SOS will be second only to UWW and they will be the second at-large pick.
6. CMU will squeak by Pomona and get the autobid.

7. GAC or Pac Lu or Pamona replace UWP as a recognition prize.  No at-large.  The other three will go to the other regions.

The BU/SJU game will have the same result just switching positions in the RR if BU manages a miracle in Collegeville.

QED

EDIT:  A quick question that I forget the answer to every year.  Will UWLC come off the rankings list immediately as an autobid or do they sit there in front of BU (or SJU) until their SOS gets them into the seeding?  Essentially, I'm wondering if they name the teams first and then seed or if they set the top four seeds and then start filling in teams.  If the second is the process, then we've got a small challenge facing our region's second at-large selection.  UWLC has a good but not great SOS that could keep the #5 team in my scenario from getting a look in until that last minute.

In your scenario, UWW would get the Autobid because they won against UWLC.

Huge game about to start in St Louis. The two best QB's in the conference both putting up insane numbers this year. I believe the battle will be won in the trenches (no surprise) and the team with the more effective run game will prevail.

I would question what statistic(s) determine the "best" QB. Is it completion percentage, yards gained, or most efficient?  Bowers and Rush have both certainly put up big and impressive numbers but neither has his team in first place in the conference let alone in the nation. North Central's Luke Lehnen leads in passing efficiency which takes attempts, completions, yards gained, TDs, and INTs into consideration, and thus perhaps serves as the best overall measure of success. No? Yes?

Luke Lehnen is good, very good. But he isn't even the best offensive player on his own team. I would actually vote for Jeske Maples as OPOY in the CCIW (I think either Greenfield or Hardy will win it). Their OL is somehow even more dominant than last year's, which had Sharmore Clarke an all time great CCIW player. Lehnen is a great fit for NCC because he can run and throw. But North Central is a dominant running team and the reason Lehnen has high efficiency numbers is because of their OL and Ethan Greenfield. He throws it 11x a game and completes 7-8. His success is predicated on play action and his completion rate is really high because their running game gets receivers open. He is not a good drop back/pocket passer. MHB was able to limit the NCC run game and make Lehnen a passer in last years Stagg and he threw 3 INT's. Compare his style to Bowers and Rush and it's different offenses.  Both of those guys operate in schemes that are 50/50 run vs pass. Bowers and Rush are required to do more in their offense than Lehnen. North Central is 70% run and 30% pass. And 77% of those passes are play action or RPO.

While I think Lehnen is a great talent and one of the better players in the CCIW, I think he is the 3rd best passer in the league and the 3rd or 4th best offensive player on his own team. Bowers has established himself as the best and Rush is close behind.

Congrats to Will Bowers being named the D3 football QB of the week.

I know this is early to be starting the Pool C board, but ...

https://www.d3football.com/notables/2022/08/conference-teams-will-not-have-to-play-in-first-round

Conference teams playing in the 1st round.

Of course, it is much harder for that to happen with only 5 Pool C bids.

For contemplation (and we have some great non-conference games this season)

Must the loser of these games win their conference to earn a bid?

UMHB Muhlenburg
UMHB Whitewater
UWW St John's
UWW Berry
Trinity Wheaton IL
North Central Wabash

Any 2-loss WIAC team?

Others that I have not listed, after a quick run of the top half of the Top 25...

If UWW, splits with UMHB and St. John's, and both those team won their conference / remaining games, UWW could get in at 8-2, given their RRO would be 1-2 at worst, maybe 3-2, and SOS would be through the roof.

With Coach Thorne leaving, does that mean we no longer have a current head coach in D3 that has won a D3 national championship as head coach?

Almost. Jay Locey, whose Linfield team won the 2004 national title, is head coach at Lewis & Clark.

And now there are none - https://www.lcpioneers.com/sports/fball/2021-22/releases/20220204bnhyj1

I think Chicago is better than LF.

So do I, but that's harder to justify now based on recent results. LF owned Monmouth; Chicago didn't.

Well, if nuance, preseason biases, 2019 results and historic "standing" all have bearing on their RR game, Wheaton Chicago really has little to worry about.

Just saying... ::)

yup, for year's Elmhurst would beat up on Ripon, Benedictine, CUC, UChicago (most years) only to get devoured by AC/IWU/MU/WC.   In any event, I am looking forward to Elmhurst's meeting with UWRF.

I'm looking forward to it as well, but only because I'm still bitter about them ringing that darn bell every time they beat us in college.  ::) ::) ::) ::)

Did someone mention a bell that rings?

https://athletics.wheaton.edu/common/controls/image_handler.aspx?thumb_id=14&image_path=/images/2019/10/5/NCCPics_Bell2.jpg

Yes, someone did. And it's a very nice little bell that was very well earned, which deserves to be applauded. 👏
But can anyone from North DuPage deny they'd trade the trophy with the little bell that rings for the trophy the South DuPagers have that doesn't even have a bell?  🤔 ;)

Both trophies were well earned, which will make this year's game all the more enjoyable.

When I played real option football at Tinley Park in the 70's we learned many things that are advantageous to football and life in general.
1. Never look ahead.  While no one can keep this 100% during the important things this will serve a person well.
2. Always give your best even and especially against the weakest opponent.  Half effort can become a habit.  On the field fight for one more yard, inch, blade of grass until the whistle blows.
3. keep positive it will become catchy.  The way I talk to my teammates effects the whole team.  Especially during a game.  Nearly every time I said or had said to me "I'm doing this and this you will be able to do that that's what happened eventually.  That was to a running back as an o lineman or on defense as a tackle or linebacker.
These things can be used in life too.
If I look ahead and start talking this and that especially if it is something very interesting it can plant a seed which can plant another seed on and on.   That can have disastrous consequences in life when you think you have an easy path overlook something important with your present endeavor.

4.  Don't mix your whites and your colours or your t-shirts will all come out of the wash pink.

Not every school produces pink t-shirts.  ;D

Game notes!

https://gojohnnies.com/documents/2019/12/4//120719_WheatonNCAA_GameNotes.pdf?id=1426

What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object? We'll find out this Saturday. The Johnnies currently rank second in NCAA Division III in passing offense (370.9 yards), fourth in total offense (535.2 yards) and sixth in passing efficiency (184.9). Individually, senior quarterback Jackson Erdmann leads Division III in passing yards (4,291) and passing yards per game (357.6). Wheaton, meanwhile, boasts college football's (across all divisions) top scoring defense (6.8 ppg.), total defense (186.7 ypg.) and pass-efficiency defense (75.3).

Thanks for sharing.  Your SID does a great job with these.

Hansen puts Wheaten at just under 12 point favourites.  33.2 to 21.8.

The weather forecast for Saturday afternoon in Wheaton is 41 degrees, mostly sunny, no chance of rain and light winds.  Perfect conditions for the Johnnie offense to play at their best. The dynamic Johnnie offense didn't show itself until we faced the Tommies last year and it didn't pop up again until we played UMHB and game one pass short of victory.

This year the offense has been pretty impressive but always with the feeling of running in third gear.  I don't think it's been shifted into overdrive yet except for maybe a few drives in the AU game and the third quarter against STO.  I hope this is the game when the dog is let off the chain and we see what can really happen.

I think Erdmann passes for four TD's and Barber rushes in one more.  So can the Johnnie D keep Wheaton under 35?  Methinks the answer is 'Yes!'

Broc Rutter had FIVE TDs against UMU.  Against Wheaton, he had TWO.  You think the Johnnie defense if THAT much better than "The Machine"? :o ::)

I can see that Wheaton fans are holding out Rutter as the messiah of quarterbacks, the benchmark against which all but Brett Favre must be compared.  They are nervous about Erdmann.  They should be.  They are nervous about the depth and dynamism of the receiving corp.  They should be.

Wheaton are favourites.  Yes.  True.  Revel in the victory before the first snap.

But if you think SJU should be intimidated or that Johnnies supporters should roll over and piss themselves like cowardly dogs because Broc Rutter did this and Broc Rutter did that but Wheaton still won then you're thinking wrong.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I am sure that Swider will have the team ready to play and they definitely respect Erdmann and the rest of the SJU offense ( and defense for that matter as well).  They expect a war on Saturday and I think we all look forward to it.

I think you misinterpret the comparison to NCC and Broc Rutter, I view it as a compliment since they have put up some fantastic numbers this year and throughout his career (again so has Erdmann and SJU).  And I do think comparing the Bell game is not completely fair as well because Wheaton always circles that game ( like I would guess SJU does for STU).

Before the brackets came out, SJU was the last team I wanted Wheaton to face before the semifinals  (other than NCC - mainly because rematches are never easy).

At the end of the day, I pray both team remain healthy throughout and play to the best of their abilities (even though we know they won't because they are both trying to prevent each other from doing that as well).  And hopefully the winner will get to play a couple of games in Texas.
