From a national perspective, up until last night, I saw Chicago at #1 with a perfect 14-0 record and Messiah at a close #2 because of the 1 tie early in the season and a weaker overall SOS but last night's game Messiah vs Hood blew me away. I have no choice but to put Messiah at #1 now. They were up 9-0 with 20 minutes to play and just passed in circles to avoid making it 10+ and at least half of the goals were from the second team. In a game where the starters play the majority of the game and no goal restrictions I can only wonder if they would have scored 20. (I have to assume the coaching staff told them not to score anymore the way they were playing at the end). It was one of the most dominant D3 games I have ever seen in my life across the board. Here is the link to the stats sheet in case anyone doesn't believe it https://gomessiah.com/sports/mens-soccer/stats/2022/hood-college/boxscore/10385
Let's take a look at Hood over the year.  They are currently 3-10-2 and only scoring 10 goals so far and giving up 38 (9 last night).  To be honest it looked like Messiah was playing a good High School team.  They gave up 4 goals off of uncontested headers and 13 corners.  I looked at their 3 wins Neuman, EMU, and Marymount have a combined record of 15-21-7 creating a win % of 35.  I am not ready to crown them D3 champs yet.  This win is a win but not a crowning moment.  They are supposed to win these games.

Maybe. But it was extremely impressive. Hood effectively played a 1-9-1 formation last night and packed the 18, and Messiah didn't waiver in their approach. They move and possess the ball better than any team I have watched (especially in tight spaces). While I am not into crowning anyone ahead of a single elimination tourney that can easily create upsets - messiahs ability to move the ball and score is uncanny. And while I guess you have to call them "second team" - any other D3 team would be thrilled to start and play every member of that bench for the entire 90 minutes.  They will be fun to watch this postseason - and while they have to earn it - I do think they are #1 for many reasons.

I definitely use second team loosely. The guys coming off the bench this year have scored close to if not more goals than the first team. It should really be the starting 22 not starting 11.

I don't disagree, I don't think any crowing should happen until after the final's been played :) Was just making some commentary on how I've ranked teams in my head thus far in the season and last nights game was enough for me to say they were just that dominant in a game to flip from #2 - #1. Messiah, Chicago, and Kenyon could all arguably be #1 though.

First half notes for messiah game.... Another goal for Matt McDonald what a shocker (I believe that's 15 games straight now tying Nick Wests record from 2018). But just as impressively, messiahs second team scores two rockets from outside the box. So many scoring options it's just more impressive every week
Yes, he has 15 goals in 15 games, but he had at least one brace and one goalless game.

Bummer I was trying to keep pretty close track I must've somehow missed a game that he didn't score. Still been a brilliant player this season :)

McDonald definitely got his right foot on that goal. But I gotta say, that York keeper was pretty suspect on all those goals.  Would love to hear what SC and Hopkins92 have to say.

Wouldn't expect the keeper to stop goal #1 point blank shot from 10 yards out, #2 (Keeper came off his line so so late and had he been on his toes could have easily beaten everyone to the ball), and #3(Someone I forget, shot it from where the end line meets the 18 from the right side. Not sure if the keeper didn't expect it but also a very easy shot to stop for most keepers) were extremely suspect. Wouldn't expect to see that type of luck against better keepers in the offseason. #4 was a solid header from Leitzel.

@Simplecoach, just out of curiosity how are you able to watch so many games? Watch them on 1.5x speed?

Week 1 (continued)

Region VI

Spoiler alert.  The story here is gonna be W&L, Christopher Newport, and maybe EmoryLynchburg should have a good season and provide important competition to W&L for at least a couple of games, but I don't see the Hornets being more than a round of 32 or maybe Sweet 16 squad.  In hindsight, we should have known the Messiah match for W&L was a bit of a set-up...keeping the Falcons from last year's Final Four and then they see one another on opening day.  The Generals likely still had a hangover at Maryville but feasted today against another inferior opponent.  All eyes will be on the CNU game in October.  Mary Washington could be in the mix and opened up 2-0 (before dropping a close one to Hopkins today).  Virginia Wesleyan has trotted to a 2-0 campaign, Covenant is 1-0-1 after a draw with Emory and win over Oglethorpe.  Roanoke also is 1-0-1.  Centre is a paltry 0-2 while Salisbury slumped to 0-2-1.

Region VII

I covered this one elsewhere.

Region VIII

Four words....Calvin, Chicago, North Park.  All three major national title contenders.  We'll see about Wash U as we move along.  And we'll keep tabs on North Central and Carthage.
Kalamazoo has had a rough go thus far but often is a sleeper, and then there are Hope and Wheaton (Ill).

Region IX

I'm still expecting a lot from St Olaf despite dropping an away match to Wartburg.  Speaking of Wartburg, the Knights are 1-0-1 after a draw with always solid GAC and the win over St. Olaf.  D3 is better when at least one or two of the Iowa teams are good.  Loras doesn't quite look like the Loras of the late 2000s and early 2010s, but 2-0 is 2-0 and the win over OWU could be prominent at tourney selection time.  GAC is 2-0-1, as are Dubuque and Luther.  The Johnnies of St John's are 1-0-1 after a successful trip out West with a tie versus Cal Lutheran and win over UC Santa Cruz.

Region X

I like this Trinity (TX) team...a lot...although I hope they don't rely on winning shootouts every time they have a strong opponent.  The Rowan game was my first time playing close attention to Meese...he looks like a Special Ops Navy Seal.  Redlands left Michigan with probably a little less than they deserved at 0-1-1.  They led Calvin three times and allowed Hope to level with under 30 secs left.  The experience should still do the Bulldogs good.  I'm expecting another Texas outfit to distinguish itself...like St Thomas (TX), Concordia (TX), and/or Texas-Dallas.  And on the West Coast hopefully C-M-S can get their feet under them, and look out for Pac Lutheran, Cal Lutheran, Willamette, and Puget SoundColorado College has disappointed at 0-2-1.

Great update for the start of the season. A team I look forward to keeping tabs on this season as well is NYU. 12 goals for and 0 against so far this season with their one tie being a 0-0 draw.

Welp...obviously gutted...but also obviously extremely proud of how Kenyon performed.  You don't hear the Messiah PbP guys often say that's the best team they've seen in years and that Kenyon deserved to win.  They were starting to decompensate as the game wore on as they complained about the ref who gave them a PK, but overall they held it together and gave Kenyon their due.  Lords gave Messiah a PK against the run of play (when I didn't see any need, like make them score), just kept coming and coming, probably dominated possession at least 70/30, and could have had at least 3-4 goals.  Don't know how that header didnit go in, and that save at the right post by Messiah GK is now maybe best save I've seen...as was very hard shot to just inside the post through traffic and not even sure how Messiah GK saw it.  Anf then hitting post inside last 15 secs.  Several other very close calls.  Anyway, always knew it was gonna be tough to advance but really hard when your team clearly did enough.  But I give Messiah credit.  They hunkered down and found a way even when put in a position they almost never face even on the very rare occasions when they lose.

And the tournament rolls on.  Unfortunately this game by Kenyon probably did enough to have me stick around another year!   And now Messiah is gonna play Hanover!

Agree with this take minus the refereeing was at best questionable and one-sided at worst in this game. Rightful for Messiah announcers to complain. Multiple instances of Keyon going directly at the player from behind with no chance of getting the ball or coming in studs first and I believe the referee only showed two yellows (#4 and the keeper at the end). Respect to Kenyon for playing hard it definitely threw Messiah on their heels and kept them from getting any type of rhythm throughout the game. The referees at the tournament level just have to be better at game management and not just letting them "play on" because it's a tough game.
