Good point looking at the OWP's , but I'm still sticking with the Dragons. Guess this is why they play the game.

My assessment of this game, it will come down to the Utica defensive backs. If they are competitive versus the Cortland air attack and stop over the top pass plays and make them drive the field, Utica wins. If Cortland pass game is rolling, Cortland wins.

Food for thought: Cortland's previous opponents are winless with exception of a 12-10 win by Fitchburg over Castleton. Utica has played St Law (2-2), Buff St (0-4 v good teams), RPI (3-1)

RPI loaded on youtube the entire game v Utica fyi.

You can get a better grip about both teams i think, beyond the box scores.

I don't mind disagreeing if we put some parameters around our definitions so we're talking about the  same thing.

Personally I don't think 5 is enough, maybe 10 and something like a brawl on the field or multiple ejections by both sides.  Big crowds can be deceiving to me as evidence.  Competing for top spot IMO should be more in the decade type range even if it's not every year but matters to both sides each year.  Closeness of schools seems irrelevant in an aW world where conferences are aligned by geography to a large extent and are you telling me IC and SJF are alike culturally or academically?  The admin clearly didn't hunk so given more than one attempt to jump to the LL.

None of this diminishes some good games, I just think it was premature to define it as such and the next 5-10 years will beat that out.

honestly not that different as much as some of us IC folks like to put on airs; the rest of the LL views us as a jumped up community college they had their arm wrenched into admitting to the league...and I have it from good sources that Fisher really, really, wants out of the E8 into the LL and thinks they have the academic rankings to justify it. I imagine the presidents might disagree.

Up front admission, this is not my expertise, but LL let in Buff State for AQ reasons, not academic. Is that correct?

Here goes:

6) Utica (looking for offense rhythm, D and ST looks solid)
7) Union (can a get a challenge for $100 Alex?)
8) Cortland (see Union)

I feel like what you wrote for Union and Cortland should also be true for Utica.

St. Lawrence and Buff State went a combined 3-17 last year, with wins over: Norwich (who has already topped St. Lawrence), Hartwick (who is not on Buff State's schedule), and Rochester.

The only game I think either team will win this year (aside from the game against each other, obviously) is the Rochester game.

Fair point, but I do believe St. Law and Buff State are improved defensively this season, and are better teams than Westfield/Anna Maria/Fitchburg/TCNJ. But its early

Ignoring the back-and-forth over the past page to focus on the football.

Thoughts on the LL after two weeks:

Union: Wins are wins, but there are wins that tell us something and wins that tell us nothing. A win over Anna Maria tells us nothing. Union might be ready to take the LL, they might be in a second-tier in the conference, but we won't know until they play someone that can challenge them.

Buff State: They're clearly more competitive that they were last year, but they're still a step or two below the Hobart/IC/RPI/Union quartet.

St. Lawrence: Last year they lost by 3 to Utica and beat Norwich by 33 en route to a 2-8 season. This year, Utica beat them by 26, and Norwich beat them. I'm abandoning my typical "I don't like to judge teams before they get a home game" approach. St. Lawrence is maybe a bit above Rochester, but who knows.

Hobart: They topped a decent Morrisville team on the road, and the offense did a great job cashing in on great field position for the second week in a row (four of their five TD drives started in Morrisville territory.) That's how you win tough games down the line, by not squandering chances like that. Not the best defensive performance (allowed 6.0 YPP and four long scoring drives of 75 yards plus). But that's still a solid win, and evidence that Hobart is going to be in the mix for a LL title.

RPI: Every year, it seems like RPI just has a game where they just lay an egg on offense. Sometimes (like against IC last year) they win those games anyway. This year, it didn't go so well. I'm still not a believer in Utica (two home wins over teams that are not good does not get my engine revving), but they might be a good test to see if this week was RPI's annual offensive no show, or something to worry about.

IC: No new information. They're going to score if they're healthy, so everything is going to hinge on the young secondary coming together and stabilizing the back end for the Bombers' D.

Rochester: Still not good.

Union: I agree. we really don't have any idea how good they are yet. Is Springfield a test? Dunno

Buff State: They are big and Athletic on defense, coaching meh. If they improve on offense they won't be an easy out.

St. Law: I think they will win some games, Norwich is better this year

Hobart: They have been opportunistic and have capitalized on them. May take to week 4 to get a good gauge.

RPI: I dont know how well Utica will travel to RPI, but I expect a dog fight.

YJ: oh dear lord

Guys, i know this is only a few plays, and is a highlight for Hobart,  but this is not the same Brockport we saw the past couple of years.

Does anyone have a link to the Hobart Brockport game? Its the only one i haven't found

I'm not sure we know much yet, I think we could agree many teams played lower comp this week.

Ithaca has a bye and then play Alfred at home. That game will be a good gauge, and Ithaca having an extra week to prep for Alfred helps them.

RPI has a tough couple of weeks upcoming, WPI and then Utica. If they go 3-0, that will tell us alot about if their new guys are ready for a repeat.

Union has Anna Maria and Springfield, it's hard to tell if Springfield is good yet.

Hobart has Morrisville and Rowan, it may take longer to see what they really are, they had a great win over Brockport but I have questions about who that says more about.

Pure slop by SLU tonight.   Unbelievably atrocious football.  I'd be surprised if we even won a game this year.

I think SLU is a good enough football team, play hard and don't quit and will win some games. They probably throw too much though, based on their personnel. I think you will have a better season this year.

You got a tough first game, Utica was the better team in all 3 phases, and didn't appear to show much of their offense. They used a 2 back set frequently. They are fast.
