Quote from: USee on November 30, 2024, 08:39:28 PMI should add the St John's color guy is a well known and long time homer. The SJU announcer is a noted homer, but he wasn't calling the ESPN broadcast (he did radio only). The ESPN stream was called by Tom Wheeler who usually does the Gustavus football games if I'm not mistaken.

November 26, 2024, 08:25:54 PMQuote from: HansenRatings on November 26, 2024, 02:58:38 PM38.7 and 39.0 are pretty similar. Is that difference within the margin of error of your model so to speak, or can you say with certainty that 2023 UW-RF was better than 2024 UW-L?Quote from: hazzben on November 26, 2024, 10:37:51 AMUWL looks like about the best 3 loss team ever, with two close WIAC losses and a loss to D2 power GVSU.
This is something I can look up in my ratings! They're not even the best 3-loss team of the last 2 years but that's only because UW-River Falls last year was 7-3, ranked #7 in the country (same as UW-La Crosse right now), and had a rating of 39.0 (UWL is at 38.7 right now) - the highest rating since 1997 for a 3-loss team.
If I limit myself to just teams with 3 losses in the regular season, here were the best 3+ loss teams each season.
2024: UW-La Crosse (7-3, #7, 38.7)
2023: UW-River Ralls (7-3, #7, 39.0)
2022: UW-Oshkosh (6-4, #6, 38.0)
2021: UW-Oshkosh (6-3, #15, 31.7)
2019: UW-La Crosse (7-3, #15, 30.6)
2018: UW-La Crosse (7-3, #15, 28.7)
2017: John Carroll (6-4, #15, 30.6)
2016: UW-Stevens Point (6-4, #21, 22.5)
2015: North Central (7-3, #15, 29.0)
2014: UW-Oshkosh (6-4, #9, 34.3)
2013: Salisbury (7-4, #22, 23.0)
2012: UW-Whitewater (7-3, #9, 37.3)
2011: UW-Oshkosh (7-3, #8, 35.4)
2010: St. John's (7-3, #11, 33.9)
2009: UW-Stevens Point (7-6, #10, 29.0)
2008: UW-Eau Claire (6-4, #8, 27.9)
2007: UW-La Crosse (5-4, #4, 31.4)
2006: Ohio Northern (6-4, #13, 27.2)
2005: UW-La Crosse (5-4, #8, 31.6)
2004: UW-La Crosse (7-4, #4, 32.8) - There were 5 teams with 3 regular season losses in my model's Top 10 this season: UWL, SJU, UWW, UWSP, and UWEC
2003: UW-Stout (6-4, #8, 30.3)
2002: UW-Stout (7-3, #15, 27.3)
2001: John Carroll (7-3, #12, 27.9)
2000: UW-River Falls (6-4, #7, 28.0)
1999: Willamette (7-4, #8, 27.5) - The #9 team this year was UWRF, who finished 5-5 on the season
1998: UW-River Falls (7-3, #8, 30.6)
1997: UW-Eau Claire (7-3, #4, 33.2)

I'm not watching the Bethel game but just checked the stats. They lost 3 fumbles in the first half which clearly accounts for the tight score despite winning in most other stat categories.

SJU lost 2 fumbles (one was on the goaline in the final minute of the half). CAR had just 1 first down, but it was a 75 yard TD pass. Other than that, CAR offense had nothing going.

SJU was also ahead of Mount Union briefly in 2022. Then-#2 SJU had 7 first place votes vs. MU's 4.

Bethel safety Matt Jung was on D3football.com's team of the week.
More interesting for me, the MIAC was also represented by Gustavus RB De'Marion Brown (freshman, 5-9, 185 lb). "Brown rushed 25 times for 218 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-10 Gustavus victory at UW-Stevens Point." I'll be watching to see if this is a fluke or if they get consistent output from Brown. This appears to be Brown's first collegiate game (no stats vs. Whitworth).
At the start of the year, I figured that Gustavus' chance of success mostly boiled down to their ability to get the ball in the hands of Breitbach. A solid rushing attack would definitely make them a more dangerous competitor.

Our Fast Five conversation for the episode is with Aaron Syverson, and we chatted briefly with Will Blakey as well. Also got a short reaction from Wartburg coach Chris Winter about the game and what's next.I enjoyed your coverage too, as I do every week. I shared the other podcast since I doubt as many folks on the board follow it (I had never heard of that show until it was recommended to me on Twitter).

SJU LB Hayden Sanders was interviewed on the D1 Rejects podcast. The interview starts at 34:51 and lasts about 10 minutes. There isn't much as far as new info, but you might want to listen if you're desperate for SJU content on their bye week.
They also give a recap of the SJU-Wartburg game starting at about the 1 hour mark.

This might be common knowledge, but I just saw this on St Cloud Live:
"Fasching said he expects junior running back Caden Wheeler (foot) to return for the Bethel game. Wheeler broke a bone in one of his feet during training camp in August. Fasching also expects sophomore defensive back Peyton Goettlicher (deep quadriceps bruise) to return for the Bethel game."
Getting some more help in the secondary should help SJU since that was their main weakness yesterday in my opinion.

I think Bethel winds up at #24 this week. Berry and Ithaca are likely out with their losses.
For SJU, I don't know how much they'll move, but I could see them sliding past Susquehanna who won by 6 against Brockport (no votes). Maybe past Grove City who had a bye. Maybe past Randolph-Macon who beat Hobart 14-7. Plus I expect SJU to be ahead of Wartburg, of course. With all those, SJU could be as high as #8. I don't see them jumping UW-RF or JHU.

Two Wartburg players have hobbled off the field during this SJU drive. Gotta wonder if the heat is starting to contribute.
