Men's soccer / Re: Official Scoring Consistency
January 04, 2023, 02:18:05 PM
The variability comes from the fact there are how many different SIDs using an even greater number of rotating student workers assisting. It is also subjective per the manual.

"An assist should not be credited on a play when the goal scorer makes a move on a defensive player after receiving the pass before shooting unless, in the opinion of the statistician, it was the pass itself and not the maneuver that led directly to the shot"

some coaches will go back after the fact and look to add the 2nd assist (or 1st if they somehow missed it - though I think most schools default to giving the assist to the passing player even if the scorer takes on 5 players to score).

I would wager with the way most soccer is played at the collegiate level there are not as many 2 assist goals per the rulebook as one might think.

Wells College

Other than a period from about 2013-2016, they have never been very strong, but since 2016, they've fallen off a cliff.  This year, they are 0-14 right now and the most wins they have had in a season since 2016 is 5.  It's not an uber strong academic school, but it was always viewed as a pretty good school and the cross enrollment options with Cornell and Ithaca might make it more attractive for some students who want the small liberal arts college and more academic options.  What happened to them?  I only count 17 players on their current roster (maybe 15 are real players) and almost all are freshman and sophomores.

Dan Kane left after the 2016 season for Oswego after doing some heavy lifting to build them up. The school is tiny and I don't think the HC job is compensated well, even by d3 standards. Pandemic hurt Wells hard as tuition makes up over 75% of their revenue.

Maybe there's a silver lining here....like a Simplecoach to Coach interview with the HCs of NYU and/or Chicago.  Maybe both of them together.

Just wait ... trying to line something up.  Stay tuned.

Just my two cents on the crazy on here.  My very long held belief is that ... I don't care.  I don't care your race, gender, sexuality, none of it.  Are you a good person, do you have the expertise, and in this case, do you love the game.  That's all that matters to me.  Sitch would not be in this position if she did not meet those requirements.  Now lets just judge her on what we judge other coaches on ... wins/losses, style of play, and managing a high profile program.

That's all I will contribute to this.

SC.
Agree totally, and I cannot wait to celebrate her success.
The one thing in this entire world that has brought more people together in love/passion/competetion/rivalry/entertainment/enjoyment is FOOTBALL. Regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, political views (some good football played in Brazil 70 and Argentina78) football supersedes all.
I am actually surprised more women, former pros and just students of the game are not involved as well.

Anecdotally, you see a variety of reasons stemming from past underinvestment. I think there is historically a higher turnover rate in women's coaching filled with coaches ill equipped to coach women leading to a lack of quality role models that would inspire former players to coach. Compounded with a lack of a clear pathway towards gainful employment in women's soccer (parental leave, pay equity, old boys club mentality, etc) That said, I think we are towards the top of the tipping point for this, though not sure if we are on the up or down hill portion.

I think it is clubs are who are going to be the leaders in this area and pull the rest of the system behind it. With the concerted efforts to develop, license, and retain quality female coaches, you will see more and more in leadership at high level clubs giving young players more exposure.  It will also take current leaders committed to stomping out that old culture. A male player being unwilling to accept a qualified/competent female coach typically isn't a decision they've come to on their own, rather, that's been the vocal opinion of people they look to.

For the d3 world at least, I don't think salaries are moving much. Most year to year raises don't even cover inflation and the only way to really grow your base compensation is by moving to new schools and trying to leverage that. Even then, for some schools there is little room for negotiation as the position is budgeted a set amount and it's take it or leave it. Yes it is probably different for a chunk of schools, mainly for the HC position. Given the state of many colleges' finances, I don't see the overall compensation strategy for d3 soccer coaches changing any time soon.

I'd definitely acknowledge that the benefits are typically pretty good, even at smaller schools. Not to mention the less tangible things like access to facilities, travel, gear, etc. Though how quickly you vest into retirement contributions seems to be a toss of the dice.

I feel like I see it less for d3 and more at NAIA and JUCO schools, but housing and meal benefits are sometimes available to assistant coaches. Yes you end up being a residential director or whatever, but depending on where you would be living, it can make the positions more palatable, though still not great.

Some will depend on CoL where the coach is located and what opportunities are available in those areas as well. There are some ADs who will discourage other jobs while others fully understand the need for further compensation.

Many/most coaches have other sources of income (camps/clinics/clubs/bartending or even other on campus rolls in admissions, student life, housing etc). When you see coaches pushing camps or clinics that kick to websites off their official school page that make allusions to the mascot but with no official branding, those are personally run enterprises where they can pocket and distribute the proceeds.

With the wide range of schools in D3, the compensation, even for head coaches, can vary wildly. While they won't put it in the job listing, there are head coaching positions that pay $25,000 a year that have more responsibilities than positions that pay 60 or 70 because the smaller school doesn't have a travel coordinator to get buses or the coach may be responsible for driving a van. That coach is likely designing workouts as well b/c there is no human performance staff (or they only work with FB).

I guess that is what happens when I'm not able to pay much attention throughout the year and try to catch up quick towards the end... I saw the note about 2019 but with the odd timing of the article wasn't sure what to think of it. Must have been on a leave of absence for the year and then made it official?

Guinn is out at Union - https://unionathletics.com/news/2021/10/29/guinn-moves-on-from-mens-soccer-coaching-position.aspx

Looks like it was announced the day before the final game vs RIT... does anyone know if he was actually removed before that game or may the story was just not scheduled to drop correctly?

Schools that are staking out dates now are likely ones that are heavily tuition dependent. They are trying to assuage fears of students not returning and convince students to make their deposits.

Also, the number of coaches who are working to convince students to pay for an additional year against their best interest is definitely non-zero.

long time/first time

I haven't been able to catch as many matches this season and have just been watching out of the corner of my eye but RITs fullbacks seem a bit rough. To their credit I think they have sucked Vassar into their game but wouldn't be shocked if either one gives the game away here.
