Thanks for the update. Sounds like a great game and a tough loss for Ferrum. I am really curious. Is Ferrum that good (even after last week) or is BC not as good as their ranking may indicate? Ya gotta love D3 football. Any given week can be full of surprises. As a CNU fan I hope the BC had an off week  ;D.

Ferrum is a great running team. But Bridgewater's offense was out of sync this game. But if your not use to ferrum's running game then they can hurt you. I say that ferrum did the right thing by holding on to the ball and keeping BC off the field. And your right anything can happen in D3 football :o

Greatest game I ever heard on the radio... This game had me on the edge of my seat with tears in my eyes. Bridgewater's Defense Took a great bend but didn't break. I surprised that they pass the ball on the goaline after rushing for over 500 yards. It wasn't a pretty game but congrats to BC for finding a way to win... I'm kicking myself for not driving 5 hours because the game would've been worth every minute. ;D

BC 30
Ferrum 27

P.S. - I told Desmond Jalloh this summer that he had a chance to make or break the bridgewater football team.

And he is making the team better by stepping up.

Congrats Jalloh on making the greatest play of your life.. so far.. ;D

Ferrum is stupid for going for it on 4th down and deciding to pass the football on the 1 yard line. They should have stuck to running with pitts. But I guess you seperate a player's heart on the one yard line and the BC Eagles showed more.

Man, don't be so down and out on Guilford so early! Its only a scrimmage. I remember a few years ago when McDaniel got waxed in a scrimmage I believe against Salisbury. Point being, one week later McDaniel beat BC in Westminster. I personally think that Guilford will open the newly renovated stadium with a win. ;D I guess I must be one of the few. :-\

Go ODAC!
I agree Llama.  I was at the McD/Salisbury scrimmage in 04 (yes it was Salisbury) and the Green Terror looked absolutely horrible.  No push on the line and couldn't tackle.  I thought the Eagles would soar in an easy one....I guess that's why they play the game, huh?!!  Of course the Gulls went on the have a pretty good season too.

I think scores in scrimmages mean absolutely nothing, but I do think one week before the season starts, how a team plays means a lot.  Even if the 1s just play in the 1st quarter or half, the fact that Guilford's high-powered offense could only stick it in the end zone once means a little something.  And I think enzoneking6's analysis of the first half is even more telling than the only seven points they scored.

Now, do I think Vogelbach and Co. will be ready against Ferrum?  Sure.  But let's keep in mind that Salisbury and Newport News are two different beasts (no offense, nnasid!).  Last year, the Gulls scored 77-unanswered against the Builders.  I think that suggests that the Quakers should have had a little more success than what enzoneking6 described in his first-half breakdown.

Before he posted on the scrimmage, I still thought Ferrum would win this season opener.  Here is my analysis I posted on the pick 'em page;

The Panthers lost a lot of offensive starters, but return their stud QB (8.2 yards per carry and 2.8-to-1 touchdown to interception ratio), their All-Region TE (12 catches, seven for touchdowns) and a handful of experienced linemen. Their defense brings back almost everybody, but will have to improve upon their 27.4 points given up per game with Guilford's high-powered offense. Last season, Ferrum gave up a conference-worst 238.2 passing yards a game ... Guilford's QB racked up 268 yards on 22 completions ... but the Panther defense forced six turnovers and held the Quakers to only seven points, which came with four minutes left in the game. Even with the Quaker offense being back, I like Ferrum's run game and experienced defense to win this one. Beware of something that is always the case when a passing attack faces a running attack - if Ferrum gets down by a couple scores early, they should be forced to throw, but they will probably stick to their running game. Problem is, both times that happened last season, they went down 24-0 in the first quarter and lost both games (their only two losses). If Ferrum takes care of the ball, they should be able to control the clock and win.

I was stunned with the play of Guilford on Saturday. I expect Guilford to beat numerous ODAC teams this year but with the performance I witnessed, they will have get it together in one week. I think alot of it was laziness and going through the motion. They seem to be dead after they drove to the other side of the 50 and the QB threw a INT.

With the way the Guilford defense was abused by Newport News apprentice running attack. Ferrum's powerful running game will be hard to stop.

Kid, If there is still room in the pick em let me know because I have ferrum running away with this game. Unless Guilford's #40 get some much needed help in the front seven.

Guilford get it together.

Good Luck all ODAC teams going into their opener..

Go Eagles

If you scroll back a couple dozen pages I provide a link citing the national championships.  And what is wrong with having played, and albeit lost in the Gator Bowl?  I think Michigan, LSU, South Carolina, West Virginia, and many other colleges can say the same thing, they lost a Gator Bowl game.

Better to have played with the big boys and lost, than to never have played with the big boys at all.

BTW the new U.S. News and World Report rankings are in and the Generals rank #17 for the top Liberal Arts Colleges in America.  So we have some national championships in football, 10 of the past 12 ODAC Commissar's Cups, and an endowment that would choke a horse!!  Not to shabby eh?

How does your school stack up?

We have a poultry plant nearby ... beat that.

And a free par 3 course ;D  ...Greatest place to work on your short game!!!

...actually the insinuation was a dig about the lack of postseason success by either team.

Remember the W&L Generals have two national championships under their belt!! :D :D :D :D

When?

I'm guessing 1873 and 1890, right?

Here is my first half analysis for the Guilford- Newport News Apprentice.
When both teams had the starters in Guilford was dominated on all three parts of the game.

The head coach was yelling at the offense because they were playing lazy. They didn't run their routes full speed and they seem scared running the ball.

One play a parent from Guilford's side started to cheer for the other team because he stretched out the Wide Receiver for guilford with a helmet to chin play.

First half score was 14-7 Newport News Apprentice ahead. The Newport News could have scored again because they ran a fake punt to the 9 yard line, but took a knee to run out clock with 19 seconds and a couple of timeouts left .

Volgenbach (Sorry if special is wrong) had a horrible first half he completed less than half of his passes.

Micah Rushing #17 didn't play until the last two drives of the half. And the QB threw to him evey play except for one. The one play, Volgenbach eyed him the whole time and 3 defenders was on him.

If Volgenbach does that during the season he will lead the league in INT's because he always look at Micah Rushing evey play.

He threw 1 INT and 1 TD during the first half.

Mr. Rushing is a dynamite receiver nad the first pass he caught, he went up for it for a 16 yard gain. The second pass he caught was a quick screen but was tackled behind the line.

Guilford RB #42 He is tall and runs high. He was chopped in half numerous times. His seems to be more of a powerback. His seem slow but had  power.

Guilford punter #39 booted a 50 yard punt (with the bounce a 70 yard punt for a touchback). The next punt he hit it off the side of his foot and almost hit me and my wife in the stands.

The defense was the most dissapointing today. The couldn't stop the running of #22 who had close to a 100 yds. rushing for the first half.  Newport News Apprentice QB #3 (Lefty) who shouldn't be playing D-3 football was throwing all over the defense.

The Guilford DB # 15 was easily beat deep.

The replaced him with #36 and the man answered wiht an interception.

Overall, the Guilford team was mentally, physically, and out coached at the game.

I was going to stay for the second half of the game but i had to take my wife to the Hampton mall.

Sorry for the errors in grammar and spelling.. i have to go to the movies in a couple of minutes

Get it together Guilford.. i had you picked second in the ODAC but you might be last with this performance I saw today.

I also liked Guilford's #40...good vocal leader on the field..

BTW- Llama and folks who watched last Saturday's BC pigskin preview have been very tight lipped (other than those cryptic messages) ;). Can't tell if you are nervous or think Mike has an ace under his hat and a full house.  In any event i'd hate to see the eagles take themselves too seriously and have a 3rd opening loss to McD in 3 years.

I would like more specific observations about progress by the O line. We've got the skill players if we can open holes and give the QB a little time.

Hopefully you'll see what we aren't talking about on September 2nd. :)

Just got back from the Hargrave-Bridgewater scrimmage.  Watched it with Hug, Llama and others.  I'll have something on my fan site about it later ... it was a good time.

Man kid, you are teasing me with this hargrave game today... I can't wait till I see your Mel Kiper analysis of the game. I hate being 300 miles east of the best football program in VA. Well at least Busch Gardens is close!!! ;D

FYI - Quakers scrimmage at Newport News Apprentice Saturday, August 26.

What time is the scrimmage. So I can do some early scouting.. ;D
I honestly don't know ... and now I'm not sure I would tell you if I did!   lol :)  All kidding aside, maybe NNA has posted it.  I haven't seen it on Guilford's site.  All I heard was a recorded message on Guilford's Sports Hotline saying there would be a scrimmage, but no time was mentioned.  I'll give you one tip, however  .... Vogelbach will start at QB.  Surprise!  lol

I didn't know that Vogelbach was starting. ??? I thought that kid Bomar from OU, you know that sold you your last car was starting. Well, both have a cannon for a arm..  ;D

-- Maybe I'll catch a few of you there!!!!

I forgot to to say thanks for the info about the scrimmage. I need to see some live action A.S.A.P. Plus, I can get a look at one of the good teams in the ODAC. And remember 2nd best is always better than 3rd.. j/k

Also, finally got my hands on the VHSCA all-star football game rosters.  Took calling the VHSCA president and three newspapers (Skoal, it was your paper that finally had them - News & Advance).  I put a little blurp on my blog about ODAC players and some high profile Division I-A players who will be playing in it.  Check it out.

The BC recruit Tee Anderson. Was always playing football with the older guys even though he was younger and it paid off. I watched him grow up from following around his older brother to becoming an all state footbal player. Coach Landis at E.C. Glass made him into an All State player... By being an alum of BC and E.C. glass, i will be there to support one of the best DB's in the state. Hope to see a few of you there ;D
