6 straight Sweet 16s/Round of 16 (whatever it is called in D3 soccer) for Calvin.  I could do the research, but does anyone know off the top of their head if there are any longer current streaks out there?

Calvin currently has the 3rd longest streak of consecutive Sweet 16 appearances -- Amherst has made the Sweet 16 every year since 2010 and Tufts every year since 2014. Messiah follows closely behind Calvin with 5 straight appearances.

North Park takes down Wash U 3-1.  The Vikings will play St. Olaf in the next round.

I think you mean Loras, who beat St. Olaf today.

I would throw out their first meeting as an anomaly.

St. Olaf beat Loras today. NCAA site just got the teams mixed up.

Correction SJC scored off a free kick to go up 1-0 v. NYU, NYU actually wearing the white jerseys but they initially gave credit to NYU for scoring. St Joseph's ME now up 2-0 v. NYU off a PK. Maybe I overestimated NYU a little bit, first time watching them play.

I think somebody forgot to tell Rochester that they got an at large bid.  Wesleyan must be sick watching this.

And looking ahead, there's no team in the country, including any NCAC teams, that feel more at home at Roy Rike Field at Dr. Jay Martin Soccer Complex than Calvin.  A home away from home.

Can anyone explain why Rochester was thrown into the Midwest quadrant? I know they're less than 6 hrs away from OWU which isn't too bad, but still feels weird seeing a New York team in there with the rest. Any chance Rochester only received the at-large due to geographical reasons? Obviously it wouldn't make sense to have Wes in this quadrant but were there no better candidates than UR here? I mean they're a team that finished below 6-7-3 Brandeis in UAA...and now they're down 4-0 first round and could easily be 5 or 6.

PN I'm sure Calvin loved this UR draw before the game even started and I was surprised to see quite a few people predict a Rochester W in their brackets. If Calvin had hypothetically played a team like Wesleyan I'd bet a lot on Wes not being down 4-0 at any point in the game. Anyways I'm hoping for first round exits for Rochester, Swarthmore and SUNY Oneonta...none of them should be here imo

OWU scores off a Gomez free kick w/ less than 2 min remaining to make it 1-0 v. Knox. Brutal way to lose for Knox but props to them for holding OWU scoreless for so long.

I put my first half notes in the 2021 Games Notes thread.  Done and dusted, not even close really.  More goals will be had for W&L.

Just as a matter of consistency, is there a preference where my game notes go?  In the thread I mentioned, or here?  Will do whatever.

I don't think it matters where you post them, I'll still read them either way. Thanks again for doing these recaps, really appreciate the work you put into them.

That is an excellent question.  My guess is they still get in because they are 4-1-1 against ranked teams and a loss to an unranked team seems to have less of an impact on one's stead in the selection committee's mind than a ranked loss, as counter-intuitive as that seems.  However, they have been dominated their last two games at home and would be crawling into the playoffs as a road team probably going against one of the better NESCACS or a Cortland or Montclair State.  Their last strong performance was against SLU who you note really turned it around and was impressive today.  SLU still has to win out to play after this weekend, but if they play like today they have a shot.

Yeah you're right, that does sound counter-intuitive. Hypothetically if you had a team with the same exact record and same or very similar SoS, but Team A RvR = 2-2 and Team B RvR = 2-0 (but with two other losses v. unranked teams)....would the selection committee favor Team B? Or how would that work

I would swap North Central IL and Hope in Region VIII.
. . . the regional committee is obviously looking at that criterion in terms of overall games played vs. RRO rather than winning percentage vs. RRO  . . .

It bears re-iterating for those who may not know and those who sometimes forget: the criterion is "results versus ranked teams", not "W-L-T record versus ranked teams" or "winning percentage versus ranked teams".  The fact the the W-L-T record versus ranked teams is what the ranking tables and data sheets includes can make us forget or never realize that the criterion is much more open and broad than that. In other words, the committee can consider who specifically the results came against and more generally if the results came mostly against teams near the top or near the bottom of the regional rankings.

That's not to say they don't look at the W-L-T record, winning pct., and how many games were played against ranked opposition--it certainly seems that they very much do--but they can dig deeper than that and give those stats some context.  I think this becomes even more important with the expansion of the rankings to 20% of eligible teams.  Some teams will have more games versus ranked teams than they would have had in the past, but if those additional results are wins against the last team or two in the rankings, that should be allowed to be weighted differently than wins (or even ties or close losses) against teams at the top of the rankings.

Thanks for the clarification. Would give +k if I could.

Just a few quick reactions to the Regional Rankings --

Looking at Region X I'm not convinced Mary Hardin-Baylor deserves too much hype as they lost to/were outplayed by Franklin & Marshall earlier this season. F&M is a team I don't rate very highly and while MH-B's losses to Trinity TX and Messiah make sense the rest of their schedule is so weak it's tough to tell if they're worthy of that #2 spot. I would take both CMS and Colorado College over them and I'm confident Redlands > Southwestern and possibly Willamette.

Region IX looks pretty solid but other than SOS it's tough to understand Luther's spot at #4 and Dubuque all the way down at #8. Dubuque beat Luther 2-0 earlier this season outshooting them 22-5 and Luther's RvR is 0-5...

I would swap North Central IL and Hope in Region VIII.

Otterbein > Kenyon is questionable and Wilmington's SOS kills them as they are much better than #9 in Region VII.

The top half of the rankings look solid, if I wanted to get picky I'd swap St Joe's ME and Mass-Boston but the rest looks pretty good.

Saw Cortland scored off a nice free kick v. Oneonta to beat them 1-0. Important W since they'll be riding that momentum into their game v. New Paltz tomorrow. Oneonta all over Cortland in the last 10 but couldn't generate anything...they've been dropping lots of games recently.

Lots of key matchups this Saturday --

Cortland v. New Paltz
Tufts v. Conn College
Montclair State v. Rowan
Calvin v. Hope
Chicago v. North Park
Christopher Newport v. Mary Washington
MIT v. Babson
RPI v. Ithaca
Wabash v. Ohio Wesleyan
Wheaton MA v. Coast Guard

As predicted in the Fan Poll thread earlier W&L already dropping points in this slate of games v. Roanoke, Randolph-Macon and VA Wesleyan. Credits to Roanoke for holding them out to a draw tonight...W&L are an extremely talented side but they just haven't proven to me they deserve the #1 national ranking. I think they've been a bit overrated all year. Now they go up against two other top-half teams in the ODAC and need all 6 points to remain in Top 5-10 contention imo. Sounds like there are some W&L supporters on the board so good luck to them.

Also saw Otterbein beat Wilmington 3-2 in a game that easily could've gone either way. Stats were even everywhere besides Otterbein being ahead 6-1 in corner kicks. I'm sticking with my opinion that Wilmington is still a Top 20-25 squad at the moment and remain underrated nationally.

Won't be able to catch the 2nd half but Otterbein is now up 2-1. Wilmington had another shot off the post too...Def an exciting game to watch

Crazy start to the Wilmington v. Otterbein match. Already 1-1 less than 15 minutes in with Otterbein hitting another off the post and Wilmington with some solid chances of their own. Very back and forth game. Think Wilmington deserves just as much national recognition as Otterbein.

Appreciate the Conn analysis, Simplecoach. If you have time to catch Otterbein v. Wilmington tonight that will be the best game to watch all day imo.
