Gusties top St. Thomas tonight 68-65. Gusties won the game on the boards. They out worked the Tommies tonight. Grabbed 14 offensive rebounds and that led to numerous second chance opportunities. Tommies look to be every bit as dangerous offensively this year as they have been but not nearly as intimidating defensively as they have been in years past. Gusties usually have trouble getting the ball into the front court against UST and they had none of that tonight.

Yeah, but you have to take their record against all teams they are tied with. Gustavus would be 2-4 against the three other teams, and Carleton would be 2-4 against the three other teams. So they would go to tiebreaker #2 which is combined results against teams above those tied - so St. Thomas, Concordia and Augsburg. Carleton is 3-3 against those teams and Gustavus would be 2-4.
So that's why I'm saying if Bethel, St. John's, Gustavus and Carleton all finished tied at 11-9, Gustavus would be out.

And someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if all four teams finish tied at 11-9, with Carleton and Gustavus losing on Saturday and Bethel and St. John's winning...the Gusties are the team on the outside looking in.

Gusties pull out a tight one in Northfield tonight thanks in part to some horrible free throw shooting down the stretch by the Knights. Now if the Gusties can win in Moorhead on Saturday they will host a first-round game as the No. 4 seed.

I think assuming Bethel and St. John's will win out is giving two mediocre teams wayyyyyy too much credit. I think it's entirely possible for Bethel to lose to Hamline or for St. John's to lose to St. Olaf, regardless of what's on the line for the Oles.
Looking forward to Wednesday's game in Northfield between the Knights and Gusties.

Great game today, the Gusties did not look very good the first 10 minutes of the game, but they got it together thanks to the play of Grey and Anderson.
I thought three key factors made the difference: offensive rebounds for the Tommies, turnovers at inopportune times for the Gusties, and the play of Zach Riedeman.
Riedeman made some big shots, none bigger than the three pointer with two minutes left in overtime which cut the Gusties lead from 5 to 2. That shot was the biggest shot of the afternoon in my opinion.
I'm hoping that the non-conference wins over Transylvania and Hardin-Simmons might give the Gusties a shot at a Pool C bid, but I wouldn't bet on it.

miacsuperfan, your comment that tomorrow's game in St. Paul should not be close could qualify for Common Man's Preposterous Statement Tournament.
What evidence do you have that the game should not be close?! The two teams split regular season games that were both close. And St. Thomas needed a win and a Gustavus loss on the last day of the regular season to earn a tie of the regular season title. Gustavus has a veteran team, while St. Thomas relies much more heavily on several underclassmen. If Vegas was putting a line on this game it would probably be St. Thomas by 4 based solely on the home court advantage.

Gustavus @ St. Thomas on Sunday....again.
Sure would be nice to get one of these championship games at Gus Young Court.
The Gusties have a much better chance to win this year though, than they have the past few years. Should be fun.

Bobby Fong and Stu Neville finish their careers by going 1-19 from the field. Ouch!
The scenario couldn't be working out better for the Gusties. They get the Johnnies who I think is the best matchup for them out of the other five playoff teams. Plus if Bethel can stay hot and upset St. Thomas, the championship game could end up in St. Peter.

The best thing for Gustavus right now might be if Bethel can beat St. Olaf in the quarterfinals. These are the two teams that have given the Gusties the most trouble this year and if Bethel beats Olaf, Bethel would go to St. Thomas and the Gusties would get either SJU or Augsburg, and they swept both of those teams this year. Plus I think I give Bethel the best shot at upsetting the Tommies, and therefore giving the Gusties a chance to host the championship game if they get that far.

I think it's safe to say the Gusties are putting plenty of value in getting the number one seed, given the fact that they haven't won at St. Thomas in a long time, yet they have had some success recently against the Tommies in St. Peter.

In response to Miacmaniac's question: Does anyone know the last time Bethel won at GAC?
Since the 2003-04 season, Gustavus and Bethel have played 11 times in St. Peter, including three times in the MIAC Playoffs. Gustavus is 9-2 in those games. The last Bethel win at Gus Young Court was in the '06-07 season. In Gustavus' nine wins, they have beaten the Royals by an average margin of 16.7 points per game.

2012 Joe Hutton / MIAC MVP Award
DP -
Per your previous post, are you predicting GAC's Seth Anderson will be the Joe Hutton/MIAC MVP this year? Just curious. I've watched him three times this year and in those three games he scored roughly 18/ppg with very few rebounds, assists and average defense. But, the guy can flat out score in a variety of ways. He's enjoyable to watch coming off all the picks they set for him.
I would think that G-Grim from Augsburg and Neville from St Olaf will be considered as legit contenders as well. Anybody else have thoughts on this subject?
I think Anderson is a lock for three main reasons:
1. It looks like Gustavus will win or at least share the conference title
2. He leads the conference in scoring by 3-4 points the last time I looked
3. Nobody else on Gustavus's team is averaging 10 points or more per game, go back and look at how many games where he was the only Gustavus player in double figures. Biewen and Grey and some others have gotten things going during the second half of the season, but for awhile there he was carrying them on his shoulders.

What a defensive effort by Gustavus last night to pick up the win in Collegeville. Jim Hill, Paul Blacklock and Tyler Grey really had big nights for the Gusties on a night when Seth Anderson was held scoreless. What a demoralizing loss for the Johnnies. They hold the likely conference MVP to 0 points and still lose by 18 on their home floor. In their last two games the Johnnies are 10-38 from three-point range and 11-27 from the free throw line. Ouch.

Drake, one minor correction to your rundown. The Gusties get Bethel at home not on the road in the season finale.
