Jim Good was hired as Redlands Offensive & Recruiting Coordinator. Looks like he had a tough go as a head coach for Hamline over the last four years. Thoughts from the boards Hamline supporters?
He says he is looking forward to relocating to California, and looking outside, I can't say I blame him. Hamline was competitive in a tough conference, losing a lot of close games. Hamline not the easiest school to recruit to vs. the other top quality MIAC schools.
By the way, Hamline has now hired their new coach-- John Pate. A lot a college experience, but his most recent job was as a head HS coach in the southeast. No local connection that I can see in the Hamline release. Anybody know more? Who else did they have to choose from?

The sun came up in St. Peter today, but GAC sure knows how to ruin a guy's Valentine's Day. With a 23 point halftime lead, I felt safe making plans to cut out early to meet my secret valentine.  The J's spoiled the evening as GAC could not get a defensive stop in the second half. Gusties helped out the comeback with some ill advised shots early in the 2nd half that allowed SJU to get quickly within striking range. The current lack of depth at the post also caused problems when Johnson got in foul trouble.
Then a miraculous 3 at the buzzer to send the game to OT and the party was over for both GAC and me.  :(
On the positive side, the game was great entertainment value and there's always next year for my Valentine. :-*
This is the 3rd OT conference loss for the Gusties. Flip those around as well as the MAC mistake and they would be right in the hunt for the title. Don't count out these guys in the playoffs.

Gustavus game tonight was officially a benefit for the food shelf. Wasn't supposed to be a benefit for the opposing team!
However, congratulations to Mac.
Interesting stats from the game: MAC was 11/16 from 3pt. range but only 9/21 from the free throw line. Gustavus had no points in the last 2 minutes.

St. Thomas doesn't, to my knowledge, block off seating. At all. Years ago, hundreds of GAC fans showed up at 5 p.m. for a 7:30 tip and "stole" all the good seating. The BV fans last year arrived a little late and were stuck in the corner opposite the team's bench. That could play a role in the ticket situation?

How exactly do you get the video.  I can hear the audio.  When I click "Listen Live" I get this screen that pops up and a video commercial plays and then the screen goes blank.  All I get is audio.  Any help would be appreciated.
I had to click around a little bit on the site. Try looking at the full schedule and then click on the appropriate channel. I would mute that audio though and use d3hoops audio.
Tommies shouldn't complain about this easy 1st round game.  #2 Wash U had to face Lawrence and survive a missed layup at the end to win by 2.

I can understand allocating tickets for family, but if you're going to have a full arena how about you raise the price a bit and sell it to the general public over phone/online?  or at least sell them in one predicatable location.  perhaps this is an ncaa rule that you have to sell tickets at all of the colleges rather than just the host school?
I am with you on this. Anyone from outside the metro area, the physically infirm, or even the people with a daytime job have no chance to see the games in person.
Another idea: Sell tickets in 2 separate sessions for Friday night. Lawrence, a team with a small gym, did this when they hosted and it seemed to work out well. This would also generate more revenue. Surely somebody at St. Thomas thought of this?
A saving grace is that the game appears to be scheduled for live video on MN Sports network.  Speaking of live video, I am watching the MIT game and seeing a lot of defense that would never pass muster in the MIAC or WIAC.

Based on what I saw a couple of weeks ago at GAC, St. Thomas is simply a better basketball team. They have an aggressive defense and it really doesn't matter if someone gets in foul trouble because their bench is so deep. Unless GAC changes something up, the result tonight will be similar.
This isn't a best of 7 series however,  so there is hope. :)
Sometimes it's just a matter of knocking down more shots
Hanson seemed to be going with a small lineup in the 2nd half in their last meeting to little effect as the guards struggled to get themselves open for any kind of a shot before the shot clock ran down. (or a "24 second violation" as the GAC announcer said). Maybe need to go big with a lot of McPartland, Paulson ,and Crowder.
I would like to see the GAC post players shoot the ball once they have it down on the blocks 1 on 1 rather than dribbling it and then passing it back out. If Paulson can't do it then maybe put McPartland down there.

AO.......I don't know anything about Haugen other than the article you posted, I do know Brownie, and GAC passed on a very good and deserving man.

Still trying to puzzle out this selection. Simply looking at the resumes of the 2 finalists, seems like it should have been Brown. Haugen has limited college coaching experience, coached in a mediocre HS conference,  and more importantly, no proven track record as a college recruiter. Also, compare this hire to the recent HFC hires in the conference at Carleton, Olaf, and Hamline.
That said, I wish him well, and I hope he has the full support of the college president and some help from the admissions department--something I don't think Coach S. necessarily had.

Gustie at Carleton recap

The possession before, with GAC leading 23-17 and under 30 seconds to play, Carleton was faced with a 3&10 from the Gustie 20ish. Gustavus was called for PI at the 4...and the refs said it was a spot foul! Schoeny called a timeout for an explanation, and the ref even told me it was the right call during that break, but I've never seen PI be a spot foul in the college game.
I think the officials actually got this one right. It was rightfully marked as a 15 yard penalty from the previous line of scrimmage- just inside the 20 yard line. There is no half the distance to the goal rule in this case as long as the 15 yards don't get you within the 2 yard line. It just so happened that the 5 yard line was also the spot of the penalty.

Election Reminder.
I voted by absentee ballot today. Those of you in the First Judicial District please remember that Johnnie Red is up for election and mark your ballots accordingly. :)

Oles win 17-0 yesterday.  Defense is strong this year, they've kept opponents off the scoreboard 7/8 quarters this year.  Offense looks good as well.  They are running the ball well.
True, but I have to question how good either of their opponents were. Luther has a new HC and new offense playing their first game . PLU was also playing their first game of the season, new quarterback, and a lot of underclassmen starting.
The Ole running game is certainly strong statistically, but as the Vikings found out today you also have to be able to throw the ball to win against good teams.  :-[

A quick update on the Olaf guys with the Redskins. Other than having the name of the college as St. Olaf's and having it located in St. Paul, nice article.

Is there anything worse than sitting at work on a Friday afternoon like this when there are perfectly good golf courses sitting open right now?
Well put, Frank! Speaking of golf, it looks like SJU is tightening its grip on 4th place in the tourney.

Actually, I like their chances to win the thing right now. They are only a few strokes out of first and have played more holes than the leader. Palingo with a 31 on the back 9.

WW- I concede to your elegant and stylish rebuttal. Hard to argue with a former player. Maybe I've been watching way too much high school and women's basketball lately and am not used to seeing all that contact in the lane.  I just didn't like all that obvious complaining from the players.
Leave that stuff to the coaches and fans. :)

I was reading the GAC game story and if what I read is true...you have to say that the Knights mislplayed the end of that game...with 11 seconds left and up 3 they are on D and Jesse Van Sickle brings the ball down and pulls up for a top of the key three...the guy is the top 3 point shooter in the conference how do you not find him and defend him?

I feel bad for Tommy Drake, missing that front end of the 1 and 1 which might have salted the game away,  is a tough memory to have.

It should be a good final...gotta give the edge to the Tommies, the way they play D and being on their home floor...I will be hoping the Gusties win though as I hope the MIAC gets two into the NCAA tournament...
Not misplayed by the Knights, just a great shot by Van Sickle. He was actually a few feet outside of the 3 point line with 2 guys on him. He hit a falling away, hand in your face 3. One of those shots that is only great if you hit it since he had a teammate wide open for a 3.
By "classy" , I wasn't referring to the Carleton players' personal characteristics. I meant their basketball style of play; as in "stylish" or "elegant" as the dictionary would say. As in, they handle the ball well, don't commit a lot of fouls, have some guys who look like they can knock down the jumper and a football game isn't about to break out on the court ala GAC/CON a few weeks ago. Gusties did what they had to do to win and I wish them luck on Saturday.
They were just more fun to root for about 6 years ago.

Exciting game to watch in St. Peter tonight.
I went to the game a Gustie fan but came away a Carleton fan. Very classy team. They should be a force the next few years in the conference.
Timely threes by the Gusties at the end pulled it out. That last one in regulation reminded me of Espenson's a few years ago against MAC,
Frankly, I found it hard to root for the Gustie team after the 1st half after seeing their shenanigans and then all the whining from the players after they would get called a few times for it. The whining paid off however, as Carleton really got homered by the refs down the stretch.
ZJ with an off night. Sutherland on fire all night long.
