Quote from: sjujohnnie on January 06, 2025, 11:09:32 AMLooking ahead to the fall, how does anyone see St John's looking? Looks like we have two open dates yet to be filled with non-conference opponents. Obviously the toughest test of the conference slate will be traveling to Arden Hills to face Bethel in the third conference tilt of the season. How different will our squad (& theirs) look? We have a transfer QB from USD that will competing to fill some big shoes. Can we build on this season or do we take a step back?

Bethel loses a lot to graduation...most of the offensive production (Kidder, Niewald, Ellingson).  Obviously they have Drews - so hopefully there are some younger receivers who were anxiously waiting for the older guys graduate.

Defense loses a lot too - obviously Jung, Nate Farm, but also Dewall, and Reese Pantilla on the d-line.  Lots of holes to fill!

I thought Coach Mac said Dewall could technically get another year due to injury earlier in his career. He may want to just graduate and move on though as Mac said he was a newlywed.

Would have been interesting to see how Bethel or Johnnies would have competed against NCC.

Quote from: sfury on December 17, 2024, 02:59:25 PMJung enters the portal. Figure big bucks are coming his way at a bigger school.

****!!!!!!!

Good for him, but man this stinks. I continue to absolutely detest the portal...detest it.

Hate to see him go - happy for him though.  If I were in his shoes, it would be difficult to not want to play as high as I could.

I dislike the impact of NIL more than I dislike the portal - I realize they're linked.  I don't mind the portal in that I think it's not reasonable to hold a kid to a decision that they made at 17 or 18 (heck maybe 16), when circumstances can change a lot by the time they're 20 - I like that there is some mobility for players - since there is plenty of mobility for coaches.

Looks like Jung has offers from Iowa State and Wisconsin now. Good for that guy.

So in this case, the regular season and conference championship game do matter. Usually hear it the other way.

@Pat Is the 2025 season the first year when there should not be any Covid year eligibility remaining on teams?

Curious if this is now "back to normal" of 5 years to play 4 or the most likely in D3 of 4 to play 4.

Quote from: BiggieSmalls on December 14, 2024, 02:56:14 PMI believe the hold was on the RB who was helping with the RT. He grabbed jersey of DE. Probably didn't need to as that DE was not likely to make a tackle on QB by his release.
I thought they called it on the tackle before the RB engaged. But who knows.

Agreed. I didn't see the RT hold, but the RB who was helping the RT did tug the jersey of DE.

Quote from: repete on November 20, 2024, 10:59:58 AMGreat stuff. Lake Forest drops like a stone. That it gets a No. 2 seed is Exhibit 1 about the need to tweak.

Agreed. Lake Forest got very lucky this year to get in using current model. River Falls got the opposite treatment from current model.

Quote from: hazzben on November 18, 2024, 08:46:31 AMI'm guessing the committee just decided a one loss Coe hosts a two loss Bethel.

Tbh it doesn't seem like the committee put much thought or creativity into the bracket. Let's group the Texas teams, NWC/SCIAC, overload one side with all the good Region 5 and 6 teams, etc.

Given they didn't have to actually make any selections I was hoping we'd see a little more intentionality put into things.

NCAA screwed up. Expect announcement this AM correcting their error and Bethel will host Coe since Bethel was lower seed.

Quote from: DuffMan on November 13, 2024, 10:15:48 PMI think he meant that there is no way for the NCAA to "make sure 2 MIAC teams" get in because there's no human intervention.  Pool C selection is 100% based on a calculated NPI value.  Either the 2nd place team has an NPI in the top 12 of pool C contenders or they don't.

Got it. Thank you.

Quote from: faunch on November 13, 2024, 06:44:19 PMThat said it feels like the NCAA will make sure two MIAC teams in this year.

Unfortunately, there's literally no way for them to do that. Either an MIAC runner-up is in the top 12 in NPI or not.

Pat - Are you indicating if Bethel loses they would not be in Top 12 NPI? I'd assume Johnnies would be Top 12 after a loss, but trying to understand your comment. Thanks.

Quote from: SJU13 on October 28, 2024, 05:26:22 PMI think Gendreau, Frank, and our linebacking unit would be people that would be difficult to potentially replace like for like or cause us to have to change things to accommodate their absence.

Given the spread of their wins I can't help but feel like Bethel would be rising in the rankings if they didn't get knocked out of the top 25 after playing SJU.

Beating the snot out of Gustavus (OK), Macalester, Augsburg and Hamline doesn't move the needle for a Top 25 voter. Similarly Brockport beat the snot out of St. John Fisher, Hartwick, Hilbert and Morrisville State (OK) and it didn't get them ranked either.

Pat - You guys may have addressed this already, but with the NPI and conferences like MIAC with only 2 competitive teams this year, how do you see teams like Bethel and SJU scheduling going forward?

Quote from: sjujohnnie on October 21, 2024, 11:38:33 PMI cannot fathom how they could possibly struggle to find motivation this week in preparation for Gustavus. I am hopeful that that sting of being left out of the postseason will carry them deep into the playoffs & make this a special season! Hopefully they realize they cannot look past anyone & that everyone is going to give them their best shot!

Will be interesting to see which Gustie QB starts. The 5th year returning starter left in middle of Bethel game, didn't travel with team to Scholastica the following week, and hasn't seen time since.

Quote from: DuffMan on October 21, 2024, 08:19:49 PMI'm not saying that.  I just don't really put too much stock in them; the ring is what I care about.

Frankly, no matter what the pollsters or the NCAA's NPI say, you've got to prove it on the field.  That's what's great about D3.
And i really hope this SJU teams doesn't  let these rankings go to their heads. Need to remember they're playing the team this week that knocked them out of playoffs contention last season. I expect a decidedly different result than last year in St Peter.

Johnnies should roll easily over the Gusties. They have taken a turn for the worse this year for some reason.
