Haven't posted in here in about an eon but I came across a cool page the other day and figured there were plenty here that might like to check it out.   It's called the Helmet Project and it's got tons of helmets, both historical and current, including almost every D3 team.  If you're having a slow day at work and want to feel like a total loser, do what I did and spend about an hour or two looking at various helmets from the NFL, CFL, World League, and various college teams.  The site creators also include instructions for sending them other historic logos used on your team's helmets.  Check it out.

Also, I caught a discussion about guys who passed on D1 scholarships to go D3.  Wasn't there a tackle from Mount Union just a few years back who passed on Ohio State to stay home and go to Mount?  It's possible he lost his scholarship due to academic issues, but he still started as a true frosh when he went to Mount and was an All-American at least twice.  Can't remember his name, unfortunately.

Does anyone know how to check up on the status of the playoff pickem sheets?

I'm an NCAC'er, but since it's past midnight I figured I'd throw this question out on a few boards to hopefully get a quick response.

Does anybody know how to check up on the status of your playoff pickem sheet?

Are you just supposed to do this on your own or what?

I'm posting this question on several boards in the hope that I will get a response soon.

aueagle,

That's exactly the point I was trying to make.  Speed on the outside keeps those DB's and outside backers honest.

Okay, unless asked to contribute, I'm done with this discussion.

Valid point, Wally, but I think it's only part of the equation.  One other intangible I'd throw in for Air Force and Navy is their discipline.  These guys basically eat, sleep, and breathe discipline and it shows in their toughness on the field.  Of course if you throw Army into the mix, that point is immediately flawed. But 2 out of 3 ain't bad is it?

If some are tiring of this discussion I apologize and I'll try to wrap up my point.  To say that a certain offense CAN'T win championships is plain wrong.  Nebraska proved in the 90's that you don't have to throw the ball to beat the best.  On the other hand, I will admit that one-dimensional offenses are highly UNLIKELY to win championships because it's rare that in a championship situation, one team's players are going to be that much better than the other's.  On the flip side, pass happy offenses usually don't win it all either (see Texas Tech).  Mount threw for a lot of yards, but they always used their passing game to set up their run, which was also very effective.  I agree with OldGuy that a more balanced style can keep defenses off balance, but I'll never buy the argument that a particular offense is plain out-dated.  If OWU managed to recruit a couple of burners and a strong-armed qb, defenses would have a much harder time shutting down the running game that they thrive on.

Coaches can only teach what they know.  If all of a particular coach's experience happens to be with the Wing-T, then that's what they're going to run.

If we're talking terms of one-dimensionality limiting a team's success, didn't Georgia Southern win a couple of  I-AA championships in the late 90's with an option style offense?  Don't know many option teams that throw for much.

And on that same subject, Southern's coach, Paul Johnson, went on to Navy where I don't think anyone would argue against the job he's done there in a short period of time.  Air Force has also long succeeded with an option offense.  Just think how good those programs might be if they were on an equal footing in recruiting?

Ha!  From -6 to 0 in just over a week.  Call me the karma chameleon.

yeah, that was plain sad.  :-[

As horrible as this season has been, my feeling is that the Gators will bounce back in a big way in '06.  I know there's still two weeks to play this season so I don't want to jump ahead too quickly, but I think if Gheny can close this season on a high note (by upsetting Witt) they will be in good shape for next season, with pretty much all of their offensive specialists returning.  And its not like they have been getting their heads kicked in this year.  All but 1 one of their games has come down to the last minute or two. Before this year, I never would've believed that big of a turnaround was possible, but I'm also a Penn St. fan and words can't describe the change of fortune one year has brought them.

Staying in the present season though, good luck to the 'Bash in the coming weeks.  I know anything can happen in the next two weeks, but I expect Wabash to represent the NCAC well in the playoffs.  Plus I can afford to support them come playoff time since they have an entirely different recruiting area.  Not much direct competition on opposite ends of the conference.

Yes, Oldguy, Witt shut us out in '98.  That was Hrovat's first year and it was the third game of the season.  Wooster was a damn good team that year and we hung 40 points on them (granted 14 of them were in OT).  I'll give Witt's D the credit there, but it's not like we would've scored a ton if we were using a run and shoot.  As I recall the weather was miserable that day.

I will admit this much.  Had Miller not transferred in we probably would've lost 2 more games than we did.  That offense was just too complex for a rookie to learn on the fly and expect to beat great D's.

great point, ski!!  I guess that's why the knuckleheads on Cold Pizza and Around the Horn have a national outlet to vent their stupidity and make their listeners dumber.  Skip Bayless and Bill Plaske are the worst in my opinion.

We ran a wing-T with Hrovat and I seem to recall hanging some very big numbers on both Woo and Bash.  We were good but never great against Witt though.  Of course, Hrovat's was certainly not you're traditional wing-t. No huddle with tons of motion.

Another good effort from the Gators comes up short.  Here's to hoping they can head into '06 with a couple of W's.   Still have Earlham and Witt to go.

Could someone pass the defense, please?

Okay, now I've got it. His name is "Leib".

wabco,

If you go to the Allegheny athletics page, look on the left and click on the teamline page.  Follow the instructions and you should be good to go.
