And looks like after moving to the east coast former Willamette HC Sam Adelman has landed at Brandeis as an assistant.

On a side note Puget Sound freshman goalie Alex Rhodes who also runs track (the 400) won the d3 silver medal in nationals and took 3rd in u20 world championships. And apparently was the only male athlete competing at the USATF U20s from a D3 college or university. Pretty amazing after taking up track late in high school. It's unclear what this portends for his future as a backup goalie on the soccer team though ;-)

Quote from: Kuiper on March 21, 2024, 04:04:41 PMWillamette hired Matt Corti-Young as its new head soccer coach

https://www.wubearcats.com/sports/msoc/2023-24/releases/202403192ikdl0

This is a big time get for Willamette.  Corti-Young was an assistant coach at DI UC San Diego for the last few years, but before that he was head coach at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, where he was West Region coach of the year in 2019 when he led CMS to the NCAA tournament.  He also did a great job as head coach at Knox College before that, taking a team that was 1-16 the year before he was hired and improving them to 15-4 within two years, winning their first conference title in 26 years and being named conference coach of the year.  He started his coaching career as an assistant at Amherst in the NESCAC, so he really has National DIII experience.

In another bit of Willamette news, Jake Oetinger, a sophomore defender is transferring to D1 Cal Poly San Luis Obisbo.  Oetinger was a locked in starter as a freshman, named Honorable Mention All-NWC, and starting 19 out of 20 games, but I think he was injured or otherwise unavailable after the first 8 games in 2023 (all of which he started) because he didn't play at all the rest of the season.  Oetinger is from Gilroy, CA, which is a couple of hours north of San Luis Obisbo, so this is much closer to home for him.

Great to see NWC making some solid HC hires.

Quote from: westroadsf on March 16, 2024, 11:56:29 AMSteve Mohn is named new head soccer coach at University of Puget Sound.

https://loggerathletics.com/news/2024/3/15/general-steve-mohn-to-serve-as-head-mens-soccer-coach-this-fall.aspx#:~:text=Mohn%20replaces%20Reece%20Olney%20as,of%208%2D5%2D5.

Is Steve Mohn still playing with the Tacoma Stars indoor (MASL) team?  That's what the press release suggests.  The seasons sort of align, but still kind of hard to imagine with the added recruiting responsibilities given that they likely need to recruit nationally too.

In any event, nice local hire for Puget Sound.

He's not on the Tacoma Stars roster so must be something from his past.

Yes agree that its too bad the NWC doesn't have some additional lever to use to add more meaning for those mid-to-upper table team's last few matches. I'm sure additional travel costs for a conf tournament are a factor, so I get it, but seems something creative could be developed. Perhaps if NCAA would allow conferences without a conf tournament to play regular season OT, golden goal, pens, etc., to eliminate all the ties, that might add some excitement to the regular season and tighten up the table?

With a 0-0 result versus George Fox, congrats to Lewis and Clark for their first point (and clean sheet) in their new era of Mens Soccer!

(In reference to SC's latest injury time) Ah, yes, the over used word in youth soccer "development." I'd also throw in a few more  personal favorites "pathway," "path to pro," "system" and of course "academy."  I think clubs would be better served by replacing "development" with "culture." Youth clubs and coaches that can inspire a positive culture (on and off the pitch) that can build confidence, accountability and a love of the game among its players can be a powerful thing. I think sometimes clubs say development to mean they hold more trainings, have higher level coaches, etc. Thats a bit of an illusion. The reality is that the key development that might occur at the youth level is going to be from inspiring them to be intrinsically motivated to want to get better (on their own), training, working out and, dare I say it, playing unstructured pickup games. (things done outside of formal coach led trainings). If you ask me, the quickest sign to tell if a kid has what it takes to play beyond high school (at any level) is what kind of work they do outside of their MLS Next A licensed coach trainings. If that answer is not much, then that should tell you a lot.

Agree, teams with a long thrower fall prey to being too predictable and too reliant on it. Match slows down while long thrower gathers ball, himself/herself, etc., lets defenses organize/setup. I never understand why teams don't switch it up more by letting the long thrower go short/quick (like a short corner) which forces defenses to make more hard decisions.

Looks like Santa Cruz is hosting both Cal Lutheran and Pacific along with some others (Whitworth). So several NWC teams doing some heavy out of conference traveling.

The last NWC holdout, Pacific. Notable is the out of conf travel to California for Cal Lutheran and UC Santa Cruz.

Yes wondering whether this might be an incomplete schedule. With late head coach change, maybe things are still in motion on the scheduling.
