Men's soccer / Re: NCAA TOURNAMENT 2024

Quote from: PaulNewman on November 19, 2024, 06:05:03 PMThe additional video is helpful.  The Messiah player got trucked, plain and simple.  Not unusual or close to a red imo and probably happens 10-15 times in most games.  But it was a foul.

This is just clear as day. The Messiah player allows the ball to run across his body without scanning to see what is coming from behind him. In doing so the ball now has too much space and the defender pressuring the ball does not anticpate he would let it roll away from him. He has come in too quickly, definitely didn't slow down at all to try and play physical as to win and protect the ball. The defender crashes into the attacking players planted leg and that should have been that. Proceeding to then quickly throw up a quick finger wag knowing he fouled the player but hoping that the ref will not make the call.

Its a foul, nothing more than a foul, and should have been a Messiah free kick.

Quote from: Hopkins92 on October 27, 2024, 07:37:04 PMSo, just got back from absolutely glorious weekend up in P.A. Some ruminations:

* - Hopkins was doing some stuff on Saturday that was very cool and confounding the Fords for a good chunk of the first half. The were having their wide players dart in when the ball was played to the more central middie, that guy with the ball was then almost running and RPO (sorry, Ill circle back) with the flank player cutting in. He'd either leave for that guy, or he'd turn, or he'd knock it back to holding middie or defender. It was REALLY fun to watch.

* - The reason Haverford is in last place is not because they are a bad team -- they are not -- it is because the lack depth. The guys up top, in particular, were running their butts off. But even by the end of the first half, I could see the their danger guys in the midfield and up top were getting tired. They just need more horses.

* - I was really impressed with Hop's ability to roll with the punches and just out-quality and (see the subs issue) out-work the Fords. Hop was never down in this game, but at this point, against this oppponent, you need 3 pts. The Fords were not going to get rolled.

- Hop scores early... Fords stick around and pick up a PK, First half 1-1
- Hop scores early in the second (same 39/40 min mark for both goals) and Fords score a damn Olympico to tie it again. This was barely 2 minutes after the hop goal (51st versus 53rd) (The wind was nutty, and this thing hung in the air like a Zeppelin.)
- So, now with the game back to 2-2, Hop goes right back to "pedal down" soccer and forces an own goal less than 30 seconds later. It was pretty remarkable.
- Ian Wammond makes it 4-2 and pretty much done in the 72 or so minute.

* - Haverford is probably the most beautiful campus I've ever seen. I'm stunned every time I visit, and it's been a dozen times or so at this point.

* - Just a technical note. Hopkins was doing some higher level stuff on Saturday. 1) Their ability to hold the ball with a defender on their back, and then in that position, generating offense was truly remarkable. I don't think folks know how hard that is to pull off. 2) The work rate on this team, for the most part, is stunning. And that comes down to, at this point in the season, trusting and relying on your subs. 3) The last couple or three weeks.. They just seem more dangerous and decisive going forward.

The drawback of the slow build out of the back is that at some point when you get to the attacking third, you have to beat someone at pace. The style they are employing right now, which is kind of a direct/possession hybrid--I think I see joy on this team. They are really getting after it.

Hopkins has such technical players all over the field and a coach that truly enjoys possession. Its awesome that they have changed their dynamic more frequently this season and it seems like its paying off.

Excellent points Enmore.

Fair enough.

Quote from: SKUD on September 26, 2024, 10:05:12 AMthat game was one dropped ball from being a Hopkins win.

A terrible pk call and blatant handball would suggest otherwise. Hopkins was outplayed on the night. Will both teams be tournament teams absolutely, but go and watch the game back if they post it on demand and Hopkins had large periods where they couldn't get out of their end even when trying to play super direct.

Quote from: PaulNewman on September 25, 2024, 10:15:05 PMI was especially impressed knowing that JHU has an extremely veteran group with multiple grad students/D1 transfers.  Perhaps the two teams are very similar in regard to being older and more mature than most.
JHU has 6 grad students on its roster.  MWU has 9.

How many of those grad students have actually attended the school for undergrad? Almost all of the ones at UMW were four year student athletes not just one and dones.
HTF should I know?  Better yet what difference does it make?  The question was about the maturity of the teams.  Do the Hopkins grad students have an advantage over others when it comes to maturity?  And please don't invoke privilege in the event they may have come from an undergrad program labeled as D1. These days that is a debate worthy of its own thread.

Not an attack so no need for the HTF stuff. Just was posing a question to see if you indeed did know. Don't think it's invoking privilege either more along the lines of what their model has shifted to over the last few years based off of the reputation of the school.

Regardless love this and will definitely fill out right now. Some really good games this week. UMW vs. Mount Union at the Kickers stadium in Richmond should be a unique game. Three of the four coaches in attendance for the event either coach at UMW or are Alums. (Tommy Dinuzzo HSC and Matt Lamb Rhodes College)

Round 3 lets get it!

We had a week 1 d3soccerfan entry and a week 2 d3soccerfan123 entry. If they're the same we can combine them.

I only filled out week 2 missed out on week 1 so my apologies!

Mary Washington with an asbolute performance against a Bethany team that is currently reeling after their first 3 defeats. I am interested to see how UMW will perform against some more difficult opponents in the upcoming weeks. Sundays game against Marymount should start them trending as their schedule starts to get more difficult. 17 shots to 0 in the first half against Bethany and I honestly do not think that Bethany was able to get into the attacking third once.

Quote from: Hopkins92 on September 06, 2024, 07:57:45 PMIf you're watching the game in B'more, looks a lot more like Hopkins takes a W than Kenyon. Both good teams, but I'd say Jays dominated possession and more danger chances.

Hopkins lives and dies by playing it out of the back and some sloppy play at the 25 yard line led to a turnover and well-finished goal.

Hop pressure led to a 30 yard cross into the box and a deft finish. Second half should be a chess match. Kenyon willing to wait and pounce, Hop doing a good job breaking the soft press and being dangerous in the attacking third.

I have long lamented the Jays inability to score. This iteration seems a little more dangerous with its movement and passing in the final third.

To be fair Hopkins has been for a while now one of the most dominant teams in possession in D3 soccer. So organized, understand each others movements so well, but I do believe there is a tendency to overplay and it hurts them sometimes more than it helps. Didn't get to watch their game tonight, but definitely will see if the game is still up.

I've been really nervous to post for some reason, but feel as though its the right time and I'm really excited to hop into the discussion especially in this thread.

So many good teams to keep track of in the Mid-Atlantic Region with some really exciting fixtures coming up. Personally, I believe Mary Wash has the chance to really go for it this season. They have more depth than they have ever had, and a lot of key players that can change a game at a moments notice. They have a 7:00pm tilt against Bethany this evening followed up with a game against Marymount who they played in the NCAA tournament in 2022 during their final four run. Should be a good matchup as Marymount is right up the road and tons of DMV guys that have all played against one another.
