Quote from: eaglesoccerdad on October 23, 2024, 10:19:15 AMOut of those 50 games only 6 were against to 25 teams? I guess there are not a lot of options for playing strong programs out of conference without a long bus ride.

the tourney will provide where the real meat and possession of ball lays...

They took away the "smite" button.

Can you imagine being on a D3 board - where folks like Ejay with his adorable lisp set up a game where they watch at least half of all D3 soccer games and then opine on them. All in good fun. No harm. Then imagine coming up with an inimitable 70's movie stars name and taking the time to post his image along with your name. Then imagine talking about smite which is a traditional biblical term. But you turn it into smitten, which is all about jesus love and you are trying to find out if the NESCAC is really the greatest ball in the world and Salem state, Wesleyan, OWU (wtf), Denison (lol) are in your posts and you continue posting every other day or so- cuz ya know- well yer committed and a gamer. And you feel strongly about it and have a worthwhile objective say in it all. And continue with it cuz it is just the D3 board and I'm Newman and all that. It's my 3 rd post - who is the best in the nation 1-7?

Lol...they did that as a favor to me.  Who doesn't get nostalgic about a bygone era when Mr.Right and I "smited" each other for 78 straight days?  Thank goodness we were only allowed one "smite" per day per customer.

CMS 2 - Occidental 1

This was a very even, hard fought, game before what sounded like a partisan Oxy crowd (complete with vuvuzelas) until half the CMS football team apparently showed up after practice ended.  In the first half, both goalkeepers made some fantastic saves as well as interventions on 1v1s and the teams went into the half tied 0-0.  CMS, however, came out aggressively in the second half and scored two goals within four minutes of each other, first in the 63rd minute on a great near-post run and flick off a cross by John Laidlaw into the near post and again in the 67th minute on a shot from Rafael Otero from the right side of the box to the far post.  Oxy was on the ropes, but they've been there before and Andrew Notter scored on a scramble in the box in the 76th minute.  To make things even more interesting, in the stoppage when the Oxy goal was scored, CMS replaced its goalkeeper, which I assume was because of injury and not because their starter let in the goal since the backup GK was already ready to go immediately. Nevertheless, Oxy couldn't take advantage and CMS was able to secure the win.

Chapman 1 - Redlands 1 (Chapman advances on PKs)

This was the big shocker of the evening, although it played out the way I suggested it might in my preview. Chapman had little offense, but fouled Redlands enough (16 to 8 for Redlands) to prevent them from getting into a flow offensively.  Chapman's lone goal came right before halftime on a free kick by Cormac Galvin.  Once they got that goal, Chapman parked the bus (or, since they are from the OC, it's probably apt to say they parked a couple of Cybertrucks) and ceded possession almost completely to Redlands.  It looked like the winning strategy as they repeatedly blocked Redlands' shots, intercepted their crosses, and frustrated their attempts to pass slip balls into the box.  With 7 seconds left on the clock, though, Redlands launched a hopeful ball into the far post area that wasn't cleared and Zach Darmanyan hit a seeing-eye ball from close range that made it through several defenders and went past the diving Chapman GK who had shifted over and dove in an attempt to make himself big.  Neither team could score in OT (to be fair, Chapman didn't even try as they took 0 shots in both OT periods and just played for PKs).  It ended up working as Chapman's keeper and some errant shots by Redlands won them the shootout.  My guess is that this knocks Redlands out, but I'm not positive how the tie will affect them.

The Finals will be Saturday night with Chapman traveling to CMS.  The last time the two teams played in mid-September, CMS won 3-0.

Cmon Kuip it was at CMS field -- there was no Oxy crowd there-be honest

I don't typically engage with nonsense, but "all Cali teams"?? That out of the gate is disqualifying statement.

But to be specific, an average Swarthmore team flew out that way and beat Oxy (3-1) and Caltech (1-0) and Chapman came out east and lost to Stevens (2-1) and Montclair St (3-0). Cal Lutheran also traveled east and lost to an (at the time) floundering Messiah (4-0) and tied Gettysburg. (1-1).

So, I'm not great at math but 0-5-1 for the SCIAC teams... What are you actually talking about?

Quote from: Kuiper on October 22, 2024, 01:18:28 PMGames to watch in Region X on Wednesday 10/23

CMS @ Occidental 7 pm Pacific

CMS is on a 5 game winning streak and just beat Oxy 3-2 at home in a game where Oxy's Andrew Notter scored very very early (1 minute in) and late (75th minute), but CMS won it in the middle of the game with goals in the 27th, 33rd, and 48th minutes by passing around and pressing Oxy.  It was clearly up for the game, more so than in the La Verne game it won 1-0 on Saturday.  That was better than Oxy did in the Saturday game against Caltech, though, when it salvaged a tie on a penalty kick in the 86th minute.  Other than against weak NAIA side Bethesda, Oxy hasn't had a full game of dominance in a long time (probably the 3-0 win over Cal Lu on 10/2 and that was a game where they were only leading 1-0 for most of the game and then scored 2 quick goals in the last 10 minutes that were marred by three red cards during a tussle after the third goal).  This is a chance for Oxy to re-establish itself as a contender for the SCIAC title and for CMS to stay ahead of Redlands, which has a bit easier game against Caltech.

Whitman @ Whitworth @ 3 pm Pacific

The Battle of the Whits is always worth watching even though both teams are coming in on losing streaks.  Neither are really out of contention, but Whitman has a better chance to catch Pacific Lutheran if it can use this game to jumpstart its season.  Its final game of the year is hosting Pacific Lutheran and if it wants to make that meaningful it needs to start by taking this rivalry game.

Pacific Lutheran @ Puget Sound 1:30 pm Pacific

Both teams are coming off of bad ties (Willamette and Linfield, respectively).  PLU has only a 2 point cushion over George Fox and it arguably has the tougher schedule down the stretch.  It should want to have a bigger cushion before the final weekend when it travels to Whitman and Whitworth because those long road trips are always tricky.

Anyone who as watched Oxy this year knows all goals run through a dubious striker and/or specious front line- not quality. Their midfield should start shooting and making runs. Quote from: nescac1 on October 22, 2024, 08:57:15 AMAfter last night, the NESCAC is a pretty insane 40-4-6 combined in non-league play.  Certainly a strong argument for including a sixth NESCAC team in the NCAA tourney pool if one can make a run to the NESCAC semis (I agree that five in should just about be a lock at this point).  That includes a solid league-wide 2-0-4 record against non-NESCAC top-25 teams.

completely irrelevant stat as the non conference teams they played were garbageholio. SCIAC teams - example CMS knocked of St Olaf. NESCAC dominance fades this year in the tourney easy. The bottom half of Nescac is garbage.

First post and I follow you closely Kuiper as you have the most incisive objective posts out here hands down. Don't get me started on the East Coast threads as I can't bear to watch or follow them. Couple thoughts on the CMS/Oxy game tonight. I'm not sure turf fields are going to help the speed of Oxy next game. They were outclassed tonight- CMS had possession by 65/70% easily, played tika taka on the wings effectively and stretched Oxy's midfield. Hard to see Oxy string 3-4 forward passes together or have any build out of the back. When you have freshmen scoring on silly goalkeeper out of the box mistakes, something is wrong mentally. CMS was better tonight technically, play better as a team, don't rely solely on the striker. I suspect they will go forward and close out the season in first. The St Olaf defeat and their SOS/SSF should get them higher in overall standings soon. Coach Cartee is recruiting some stellar players. I smell upcoming dynasty...
