From the Senile One...

It doesn't appear that new Gophers basketball coach Tubby Smith is going to keep any of the coaching staff that finished the past season. He already has hired two assistants in Ron Jirsa, whose last job was head coach at Marshall, and Saul Smith, his son. Saul was an assistant coach at Tennessee Tech last year.

Oh boy...my feelings for Saul are like Keating on steroids. This might not be as good as I first thought...

New Gophers men's basketball assistant Saul Smith, 28, on the energy he has for the job: "I'm going to be everywhere, all the high schools, all the AAU tournaments. People are going to get tired of seeing me."

Like you I'm sure, Willy, I already am :(

Willy, kel, or anyone else know the status of Wittwer for tomorrow night?

Wittwer's Status for the game: AWESOME, in a not basketball-related way.

This tournament is all about one man: Jon Bain.

I am now coaching at Foley and have a couple of kids that SJU is very interested in.  They were at the game last night and have bought into the hype that is MIAC basketball.  I tried to tell them what a fun league it is, now they know.

Former RRC member represent! RRC pride, nationwide baby! Oh for the good old days of Milaca, Sauk Rapids, Foley, Chisago Lakes, Princeton, North Branch, Pine City, and Mora (and who could forget about Cambridge before that) when giants like Conrad Emmerich and Jesse James roamed the plains. Things will never be the same....

Keating is still the MVP of Western Civilization, eh Shocker?

Why limit ourselves to the West while Yao Ming is out with a broken leg?

FYI

http://www.startribune.com/508/story/929131.html

"He's [Keating] the best player in this conference," said Hamline coach Barry Wohler, who was watching Wednesday's game. "He does everything."

Well, if the "best coach in the MIAC" agrees with me......KEATING FOR ALL-AMERICA!!!!

Strange though, that with all that "talent" and the "best coach" Hamline is again sitting near the bottom of the conference. SMU has taken hold of its usual place as well. Ever feel like the MIAC is an awful lot like that Bill Murray movie?

Long live Punxsutawney Phil ;)

Gimme a break with this argument. It's D3. People make decisions to not play for a lot of reasons, only some of which are of the cut variety. For example, arguably the best post on campus my senior year didn't go out for the team due to his career path. That doesn't mean they aren't/weren't good and never play anymore.

And to think, Mr. Thousand Points, Thousand Rebounds, 3rd all-time in the state of MN for blocked shots didn't even become a teacher ;)

(Check http://www.mshsl.org/mshsl/records.asp?actnum=402 if you don't believe me....you'll find him on the career rebounds list, too. And he did it all with a torn ACL his senior year.)

I was on both ends of those JV showdowns. Willy's right...they're not a big deal.

Keating needs to step up? This just gives him the chance to show who the REAL MVP is, right Shocker?

Don't bait me like that, magical Candy Man. You're lucky I'm in generous Christmas spirits and will let that one slide this time.

He got his 19 and 12, and his teammates let him down. It's lonely at the top.

I'll just have to hold my breath and hope he lives up to his all-universe talent after the start of the new year.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

I'll break it down for you, to SMU-level. (Let me guess, as would be the ultimate irony, you're a communication studies major? Only they could be that oblivious. Am I right?)

comon now...no reason to hate on the communications major...i turned out ok...maybe ;)

if anyone needs a rapid trama assessment im your dude and remember to thank your epiglottis for preventing food and liquid from entering the trachea during swallowing

wow that was nuts

as common would say, "im either on something or on to something"

My apologies, Mr. Mafia. I'd never hate on you. I just always thought it funny that my mom assumed "comm studies" meant "compromise studies" because the students had compromised their initial goals of med school, law school, etc. after the weed-out classes.

I will always remember the suburban Gustie gal from my freshman year who wanted to go to "doctor school" as my quintessential comm studies major. I don't think she realized that (a) George Clooney had already left ER, so she wouldn't get to meet him, or (b) ER wasn't actually "doctor school" anyway.

But hey, now they have Uncle Jesse as a replacement, so maybe the dream is back on for some doe-eyed Gustie freshman again this year.

Shocker:

How is Jake Phillips over-rated.  "Kid has No range, no handles, no vision. Kid barely cracked the rotation on a team that lost its first 3 conference games last year."  But somehow led the miac in assists per game last year, led the league in 3point percentage and was 2nd in the league in 3 pointers made   3rd in the leage in assist to turnover ratio??   also led the league in minutes per game and after the first 3 games I'd say his team did all right wouldn't you.  If he is over-rated what do you think he should be doing?  Personally I don't like his game, and find it hard to watch the kid but somehow he gets it done.

Oh Redbird......I see your perception of subtlety is as strong as SMU's chances of actually doing anything this year. Yikes...if that kind of sarcasm goes over your head, I'd hate to see what you'd do if Kel was still around and you had to decipher his madness.

I'll break it down for you, to SMU-level. (Let me guess, as would be the ultimate irony, you're a communication studies major? Only they could be that oblivious. Am I right?)

Clue #1: I was obviously aware of how Carleton did in the 17 MIAC games following the 3 losses.  That's why I specifically limited my "insult" to those games. Heck, I went to at least 5 of the games, plus both Carleton playoff games. I had a vested interest in the team, and have seen "No-Handle" Phillips play pretty well. Nice guy too.

Clue #2: Hanson-bashing. Granted, I don't post as much as I once did, but anyone who's ever read this board knows me to bleed Gustie gold, and above anything else related to GAC, I hold Hanson in the highest possible esteem as a coach. Then again, he's barely won 7 out of 10 games over the last nearly 2 decades and is working on an uncharacteristically long drought from the NCAA's...... ;)

Thank God one of the Catholic schools still teaches something as SJUforlife was quick-witted enough to catch my thinly veiled sarcasm. Geez, I'd almost lost the faith.

awhile back i asked the question who is the most underrated player in the miac...i got a few answers, but none were robinson...i would say he is got to be a top 2 or 3 most underrated player in the league along with brady brink of SJU...anyone else's thoughts?

i think robinson would be would get the lable of up and coming player rather than underrated player because he was not getting significant minutes last season.

1. Keating--best ever. Any rating is under-rating.
2. DeRock--just because everyone talks about him and how Hamline will finally be good all the time, doesn't mean he's overrated. In fact, I'd say he's become so rated, he's back to under-rated. He's like living in a post-cool world.
3. SMU--Give 'em their day. Let's call them all under-rated. Like Hamline, Augsburg, and St. Olaf, if we don't give them their delusions of "this is the year/we have a new coach/we got a sweet transfer/the young guys have experience/they bonded over the summer/the jv program finally developed/they found a way to circumvent steriod testing" then they won't have any glory at all. So just give it to them. SMU is under-rated. They'll contend. Really. For real this time.

Over-rated:

1. Hanson--He's barely won 70% of his career games, and he hasn't even been able to do it for 2 decades yet. Let's all hold off on the accolades a while longer. I'd take Wohler and his program-transformation abilities any day.
2. Jake Phillips--A Carleton PG? Come on. No range, no handles, no vision. Kid barely cracked the rotation on a team that lost its first 3 conference games last year.
3. Kel_Varnsen--Where'd he go anyway? Half the posters here probably don't even know him anymore. I'd compare him to Dwight Gooden: some transendent years at a precocious age, followed by a horrific cocaine-fueled meltdown. I'm still waiting for the comeback, a la Gooden on the Indians in 1998.

I can't let it go without commenting on it.

In addition to yet another group of Stellar numbers provided by UST's big 3
-Convincing me to start a petition for Keating as All American material
-Plus solid defensive effort from Lonnie

You can't start that petition. I'm the original.

Keating. All-America. Mark it dude. Based on last night, first maybe second team if the usual "east coast bias" prevails. He's a force of nature, and by all accounts the greatest dude who ever lived. Did you know his family crest is a picture of a barracuda eating Neil Armstrong? That's a heritage.

Goooooooooooooooooooo Gophers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There's new MIAC sportsmanship? They taking their cues from The Stern? Do we have a new ball too?

I think I've seen those predictions out of you before, Mr. Varnsen.

I think I've seen those predictions out of you come true before, Mr. Varnsen.

I'd say odds look good for them again.

Here I was....all set to have another supporter in the Keating army, and then you had to go and quote Dane Cook. So much for that axis of evil alliance.

It sure would be nice to hear from a Tommie or UST fan that's close to the team this year.  During the previously mentioned halftime interview with Siverson, he mentioned that he'd heard like some of the rest of us that UST's Mike Keating had hip surgery this spring, but was now having back problems or something to that effect.  Course on the other hand, if I'm a Tommie booster, I don't know if I would want to let the cat out of the bag if Keating was in fact injured.

Although he wasn't sure of Keating's' playing status, Siverson opined that without Sean Sweeney & possibly Mike Keating, the Tommies become an ordinary team.  I would tend to agree with that assessment.  However, Coach Siverson also thought Keating & Bryan Schnettler were D1 transfers, when in fact only Rosefelt was the DI transfer.

Is this November 2005 or November 2006? Are the excuses as to why he won't dominate the league and be MVP starting already?  ::)

Who cares about league MVP? Even Gilbert (the Elder) got one of those. That's small potatoes, baby. All-America, all the way. I'm on board. Who's with me?
