Actually ran into Thad at the Calvin-Trine game today.  He is completing his graduate studies in physical therapy, and yes, still playing in a rec league with many ex-college players (including John Teske from U of M). I assume he is dominating.

Quote from: oldknight on January 18, 2025, 07:47:52 PMDaane Harvey's career night fueled the Knights' comeback, with the former Forest Hills Eastern prepster scoring a game-high 19 points on 6-8 from the field, all from beyond the arc, and doing his damage in only 15 minutes of PT.

I have thought it strange that Harvey doesn't get more minutes, even though he has typically been used as a "defense/hustle" player.  I think he brings way more offensive upside than other bench players, like Trip Reimersma for example, who just isn't playing with a lot of confidence right now. Daane is making a case for increased game time.

Great game for the Knights, taking the lead early and maintaining about a 10 pt lead most of the game, fending off a few runs by RMC in the second half. They really struggled to contain Jalen especially in the first half, learning early that single teaming him wouldn't work, with only slightly better success with doubles, triples, and zone. Uchenna also very strong on both ends. Even with a tough road, we're on to the final 8!

Woof.  This livestream play by play guy at JCU is the most apoplectic homer I have heard in a long, long time.

Calvin was so tough defensively, especially in the 1st half.  Uchenna really shut down Thomas, and Hope looked lost on offense.  Couple that with nearly everything falling for Calvin (Egekeze was 9/9 from 2, 1/1 from 3!!) this one was over early.

Hard to understand Why Thad was on the bench for the final sequences.

Don't think I have seen this name on the board for Calvin:

Sirr Favors, 6'2" SG, Valley Christian HS, Cerritos, CA

If the announcer doesn't yell "Yes Sirrrrrrrrrrrrr" after every three, it is a huge missed opportunity.

Random morning-after thoughts on Hope vs. Calvin:

  • As Sac reported, it was a well-played game, marked by great first half shooting and few turnovers by both teams, and a down-to-the wire finish (the sort of game that, even when my team has lost, I've said was a great game).
  • With Emmett Warners still out, Calvin's scoring came from its starting five, with only 5 points from its bench.
  • Has Thad Shymanski always been that good--or is he a greatly improved player during his Calvin years?
  • Uchenna Egekeze has a great future and will be fun--for Calvin fans--to watch for the next four years.
  • Evan Thomas' rebounding and drives to the basket, and Preston Granger's skill at rotating with his back to the basket make me wonder if either would like to use that extra year of eligibility.
  • In the first moments of his college career Noah Hedrick drains a 3-point shot . . . enabling Hope to win by 2 . . . against Calvin . . . a memory he can take to his old age.

Been watching Thad since freshman year high school, and he has always been a great shooter, but his all around game is significantly improved. But it’s a sneaky good—sometimes he seems to be moving in slow motion, and suddenly he is scooping a shot underneath his defender at the rim, and you wonder how he did that.

Per Twitter, Jackson Glanzer,  5'11" guard from Berrien Springs planning to play at Calvin.

I can't remember this many recruits in recent history. Seems like a lot of welcome recruiting energy so far in the Sall era. I thought VandeStreek had lost that juice toward the end.

.....and also Trent Mulder, from Covenant Chr. 6' 4" guard. "BTW you are not seeing double!"

Evan May, 6' 3" wing for GR Christian planning to play basketball at Calvin per GRChristianeagles.org. He was also an excellent volleyball player/outside hitter in the fledgling high school men's volleyball program in Michigan.

Off the top of my head
Matt Haveman(?)             G  GR Christian   -----Calvin

Marcus Haveman, 5'11" G GR Chr. He has very good handles, loves assists (and the flashier, the better), better slasher than shooter, but could put up points.  Plays very emotionally, often to his detriment. See the link for a taste.

I'm admittedly a fan of the Scots, but I do think it was a foul. The Calvin player extends his arm to grab Harvey. I think that play gets called every time it's seen. As so often happens on a last second shot, the defender became a spectator and had to grab with an extended arm. You can see many of the players and coaches on the Alma bench jump up to protest right away. I thought it was a reasonable call, but could see it go either way. Just like the foul on Gamble's shot just prior to the Woodruff miss.

Some contact certainly occurs at some point prior to the horn. The degree to how egregious was and if it should have been called at all can be debated. What really grinds me is:

1. The game had not been called tightly all afternoon. Calvin was awarded 3 FTs all game and Alma was awarded 4 FTs prior to this play. Coaches on both sides had been calling for foul calls -- with lots more contact than on this play -- all game long. Fouls, for the entire game, were 9 for Alma and 10 for Calvin up to this point. The call was not consistent with the rest of the game.

2. The Scots were awarded a shooting foul when the rebounder had not even touched the ball before the horn. IF there was enough contact to award a foul I believe it would have had to be a 1-and-1. As sac points out, the referee who made the call did not even flinch at any contact before the horn. To me it was a classic case of the ref waiting to see that the shot was missed to award the foul. Unfortunately all relevant events occurred well past the horn at that point.

I completely agree with Slappy. This amount of contact was not called all game long, and to determine the outcome of the game in this manner is really poor officiating. This is a no call.
And lost in the controversy was the fact that Alma has some retched away jerseys. Wow, those things are a travesty—kind of like the love child of the late 90's Pistons jerseys and a flannel shirt.
