I rarely post on this board, I am more of a basketball fan. But I had to break up the "who got beat by Albion worse" support group. I must say the amount of information you can find on the internet is great. A quick search of the stat sheets for the two games in question reveals some interesting things.

Boredatwork- I haven't laughed this hard in a while. That had to be the first time I have ever heard of an extra point being called a long field goal. You were correct on one thing, the 73rd point came late in the game, only because the Albion reserve players went on a 13 play drive ending with a TD taking more than 7 minutes off the clock. It looks like none of the scoring drives by the 1st team offense took more than 5 plays. The only FG Albion tried took place in the 1st qtr and they missed it.

Adawg- Looking at the stat sheet I would find it hard to say the score was run up. Yes it was a lopsided score, but it looks like the starters were out with more than half of the 3rd qtr remaining. One of the 2nd half scores was a fumble return by the defense for a TD. Turning the ball over 4 times in the 2nd half didn't help Adrian out either.  At least 30 players recorded a tackle for the Albion defense, and it looks like 7 different RBs carried the ball. It sure does seem like they cleared the bench.

That is all for me this football season. I look forward to seeing most of you during another exciting MIAA basketball season.

QuoteLooks like Paradise will be prepared if they ever have to play at Hickory High School

Ziggy,
Hickory High School will not be borrowing the church bus to take the Huskers to Paradise anytime soon. Due to the influence of Miles Brand, the IHSAA (Indiana High School Athletic Association) adopted the NCAA classification for in region and out of region games. A game between the two schools would not cout towards the Huskers regional play-off seeding come tournament time.

HopeConvert, you must have missed the Iowa-Michigan State game the other night. Great showing by the Spartans with 18 points scored in each half.  The ugliest display of shooting I ever saw was on a hunting trip with Featherstone and The Angry Dwarf. The only animals in danger that day were the ones completely hidden as their aim was just a bit off that weekend.

Chip Mundy with the Jackson Citizen Patriot broke an interesting piece in his article this morning. Because of the students still on break at Albion, the heat in all buildings on campus will still be shut off for the game against Olivet on Wed night. Word from Coach Turner and Coach May is the Britons will be wearing long sleeves in Kresge, and the point guards have been practicing the last few days with gloves on. This could be a huge home court advantage for the Brits. All fans making the trip to Historic Kresge Gym should dress warm as well.

Stinger I love your optimism "Time and a place for everything." With the way the college football season went this year, I see the Hornets picking up a double digit win against "that school from the west."

Before I first posted, I asked the question to a number of Scouts I know around the NFL. I heard back from scouts with 9 different teams(two of which are the head of scouting for their team), and all had the same response that nobody in the NFL tests or holds a workout for student-athletes with eligibility.  I got the same response when I asked a couple of ex-NFL assistant coaches. I guess the Liedowns and the Jets are in the minority and they do workout/test student-athletes with eligibility remaining.

D306,
I was able to catch a scrimmage yesterday. The team I watched had some unreal talent, stuff that hasn't been seen around the MIAA for a long time. During the whole scrimmage, I didn't see one missed tackle, one incomplete pass, one fumble or interception. However, I also didn't see one player or coach on the field. I am new to the Grand Rapids area, and a former friend (as of yesterday) told me I should go check out the Calvin College Knights football team, as they were holding a practice open to the public. Now I know why everyone looked at me like I had two heads when I asked where the football team was practicing. What a waste of a good Saturday.

I never stated it was an issue with the NCAA regarding eligibility. It is an issue with the NFL and the rules within their league. I may have gone over the edge calling it illegal, but NFL teams simply do not hold combines for kids in the summer who still have eligibility. One reason is college coaches wouldn't allow it due to risk of injury.

I question the combine workout with the Lions. It is illegal for an NFL team to tryout  a player who still has eligibility.

Sorry I haven't been around for a while. I have been caught up in a custody battle for my child. Apparently 5 other men feel it is theirs as well!!!

Sac, I was at that 99 game, it was a heartbreaker as Albion missed a layup to win the game in regulation. It was a shot "He Who Not Be Named" could make 9 of 10 after a hard night at "Relli's.

Bulldogalum, you went up in my book with your newfound inability to fully type out the name for that school out west. With some help I think you can learn to not even use the first letter.

Only once have I seen a person leave a court as fast as the officials did for the Albion Adrian game the other night, that was when Spaman flew off the court at Kresge to beat the halftime rush to the concession stand for buy 1 get 1 free hotdog night.

I got a tour of the Lions practice facility the other day and got to see the inside of their draft "War Room." Looks like they are going to use their pick to draft some QB out of Oregon who had a huge mural plastered on the side of a NYC building. I guess he is a great piano player as well. Book your flights to the Super Bowl, according the the GM, this is a can't miss prospect.

I caught Coach Turner's post game press conference on www.youtube.com this morning. He had some great remarks about the game, although he got fired up at the end when the sports writer for the Pleaid (Albion's school paper) asked how Coach Turner felt about now having to make the trip out west for the Conference Tournament. Coach T responded with "They are who we thought they are, and tonight we let them off the hook. If you want to crown them, then crown their a**."

I can see that as the next Coors Light commercial.

SAC funny you should mention the word miracle in your post about the game last night. I spoke with Albion's asst. Coach May this morning on the phone and he said they have asked Mike Eruzione to come speak to the team before the MIAA tournament begins and have also asked him to travel with the team and sit on the bench as an honorary asst coach with one stipulation. He does not weark a Navy Blazer with Khaki pants.

I saw some posts earlier about a kid commiting to USC for football. Did anyone else see the other verbal commitment USC received the other day. They are getting a Running Back out of San Francisco City College. He doesn't use his real name instead he uses his initials. He has a "slashing" running style. Look for "The Juice" to win a heisman during one of his two seasons at USC.

Nate,

I am surprised you were able to even type the first letter for "That school out West." It looks like your counseling sessions are paying off. In three more years you might be able to add the second letter or even wear an orange shirt.

I don't think I will be able to make the game on Saturday. Hexman and I well, um, actually have a pretty nice little Saturday planned, we're going to go to Home Depot. Yeah, buy some wallpaper, maybe get some flooring, stuff like that. Maybe Bed, Bath, & Beyond, I don't know, I don't know if we'll have enough time.

I am a little diappointed I won't be there  Saturday to take a seat at the bottom of the bleachers by the Brits bench and hold a conversation with Coach Turner when he walks over and starts to chat with the coaches of the other sports teams and the admissions office representatives. Which usually starts to take place with about 9 minutes to go in the first half and will continue throughout the game. "Hey Carlton can you believe these officials today."

David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone; and he slung it...

GO BRITS beat  - - - - on Saturday

I can't believe I beat bulldogalum or any of the other Adrian fans out there in reporting this story. There is a new press release on Adrian's website (www.adrian.edu). Based on the buzz created by Hope's new mascot, the Bulldogs didn't want to feel left out, and will have a brand new mascot of their own. On their road game at K-Zoo, Adrian will introduce their new mascot, a real Bulldog who will take a place at the end of the team bench. There was no mention of who provided Adrian with the animal.

In an unrelated news story, the police log for Athens, GA showed a call made to police about a missing bulldog named UGA. The owners believe the dog was stolen.

There is an interesting story on the MIAA website (www.miaa.org). MIAA comish Dave Neilson has awarded Hope the basketball championship along with the MIAA tourney title and the MIAA's automatic bid to the NCAA tourney. He also stated Wed. and Sat. games will be played because the officials were already assigned.

After reading this article I was finally able to make sense of the invitation I received last night from Coach VandeStreek to the Calvin Basketball end of the season banquet which is being held this Sunday afternoon.

I had a slow day at work so I decided to check out www.census.gov. I found some interesting information on the website. I found a page listing the top 20 occupations of people who enter the Federal Witness Protection Program. I wasn't real shocked to see "Alma College Men's Basketball Leading Scorer" at #9 on the list. Every year is seems like that guy doesn't end up on next seasons roster

They split a doubleheader with Despair and Pride.

Hope ran Despair out of the gym early. In the final game of the night, it was a 4OT thriller with Pride beating Hope on a buzzer beating game winning shot.

The Holland Sentinel has a great writeup on the two games.

Last week an emergency meeting was called for the SuperSweetness Hall of Fame Board of Trustees to deal with the sudden news about SAC ending his posting days. First measure brought to the table was waiving the 5 year retirement clause to place SAC on the Hall of Fame ballot for this years class. However, a board member (The Angry Dwarf) brought up a great point dealing with "High Speed Internet" and the inflation of SAC's posting numbers and statistical acquisition for much of the information included in his posts. The Board came to a final decision, and  based on the era of "High Speed Internet", SAC had an unfair advantage over posters from the previous "Dial Up" era. It was ruled SAC must wait for other posters in the "High Speed" era to wrap up their careers before he will be eligible for SSHOF voting.

On to some other news

Stinger, I belive John Stott was the Freighter built and placed into service in 1976 to replace the Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior. However, I am only 72% sure!

Try a little change of pace for the board.

It wasn't until 1998 when the host team didn't win the Championship in the league Tournament. Which came about from a great final minute comeback by the Brits over that orange school to the West. Since that ESPN Instant Classic, only twice has the host team won the championship (both by Calvin). What will happen this year?

The registrar's home page on Calvin's website has listed a new class for the fall semseter. Coaching the KVS way aka Right Way vs Every other coach's philosophy in the country 101. The syllabus is already available for those who are interested. Looks like some great discussions for the month of October. Enrollment in the class is limited. If you wish to add the class after the first day of class, you must sit in the back, participate in discussions, take notes, do assigned readings, however you will not receive credit for the class. Rewarding those who come after the original class roster is made, is not the KVS way.  ;)

Looks like the MIAA is back to its post 1981 pre 2003 results. Albion is back to going 1-4 against the two headed monster from the west, and they also drop a game to a non-contender that they should have beat.

Sac what a small world it is, you ran into He-Who-Not-Be-Named at the game, and I stepped over He-Who-Not-Be-Named while he was laying on the groud outside of the Phoenix. From the looks/smell of it, I think he took last nights loss pretty hard.

I was in a store buying a suit yesterday and the place was packed. Curtis Enis who still has to play in the Citrus Bowl was in there with a person who looked to be an agent. I am sure the NCAA won't like that at all. Also there was this short guy  ranging in the 5'6''-5'8'' realm. I heard one of his buddies call him "Ranch", man that is some nickname. Anyway to my amazement this guy is getting a size 52 extra short for his suit. I heard the salesman say that is the first time they have ever had a suit that big for someone under 300lbs. "Ranch" must be one hell of a weightlifter.

With a win tonight Coach Turner will post win number 497 for his career. Not bad for a guy who started out as the golf coach.

I would love to see Coach Turner end the season with at least 500 wins.

Indian Trails Bus Service released the passenger list on their website for a bus that is leaving from Albion, MI and arriving in some town on the west side of the state. Knight fans worst "knightmare" came true as one Brett Quaile is on the passenger list.

For all of those interested in Official Conspiracy Theories, there is a good article out about longtime Big 10 official Dick Honig.

KresgeKrazy and I were out in LA last night with a group of people and we ran into this guy who said he played for the Green Bay Packers. He said his name was Max McGee. He bought us a few choice beverages as he had more than a few himself. He was telling us how he was going to be sitting the bench today in some game called the Super Bowl. KresgeKrazy and I turned the game on today and there he was catching a pass for a TD. We had trouble believing this guy could even stand up let alone catch 7 passes for 2 TDs.
