What kinds of defense was OSU attempting to implement on the field? I've never seen a defense run backwards like that before. And Laurinaitis? He got his butt-kicked. I don't know how many times he was blocked 10-15 yards downfield.
A close personal friend told me on Sunday (9:30-12:00) that the Gophers were the only school in the hunt for Laurinaitis until OSU came calling late - the source of this information makes me believe this is not true, but who knows.
Laurinaitis is a good football player but also a product of OSU's system and talent playing with him - I have had this argument with a friend who is very anti-Gopher athletics (mainly for their lack of recruiting MN kids) and I have argued with him that Laurinaitis would not be 1st team Big Ten if he played for the maroon and gold as he would be shedding blocks to save his life with a very average defensive line in front of him - he disagrees.
Although I would never want to meet him on the street at night, I think Laurinaitis is a little bit over-hyped - and I have to think his father's quasi-fame has helped make him very marketable to TV analysts.

FW: MasterCard Wedding
You gotta love this guy... This is a true story about a recent wedding that took place at Clemson University . It was in the local newspaper and even Jay Leno mentioned it.
It was a huge wedding with about 300 guests. After the wedding at the reception, the groom got up on stage with a microphone to talk to the crowd. He said he wanted to thank everyone for coming, many from long distances, to support them at their wedding. He especially wanted to thank the bride's and his family and to thank his new father-in-law for providing such a lavish reception.
As a token of his deep appreciation he said he wanted to give everyone a special gift just from him. So taped to the bottom of everyone's chair, including the wedding party, was an envelope. He said this was his gift to everyone, and asked them to open their envelope.
Inside each manila envelope was an 8 x 10 glossy of his bride having sex with the best man. The groom had gotten suspicious of them weeks earlier and had hired a private detective to tail them.
After just standing there, just watching the guests' reactions for a couple of minutes, he turned to the best man and said "F--- you". Then he turned to his bride and said, "F--- you ". Then he turned to the dumbfounded crowd and said, "I'm Outta here." He had the marriage annulled first thing in the morning.
While most people would have canceled the wedding immediately after finding out about the affair, this guy goes through with the charade, as if nothing were wrong. His revenge...making the bride's parents pay over $32,000 for a 300 guest wedding and reception, and best of all, trashing the bride's and best man's reputations in front of 300 friends and family members. This guy has balls the size of church bells.
Do you think we might get a Master Card "priceless" Commercial out of this:
Elegant wedding reception for 300 family members and friends...$32,000.
Wedding photographs commemorating the occasion ... $3,000.
Deluxe two week honeymoon accommodations in Maui ... $8,500.
The look on everyone's face when they see the 8 x 10 glossy of the bride humping the best man..........Priceless.
There are some things money can't buy, for everything else there's MasterCard

You can't spell Monkey Stomp without L-S-U, right TMerts?
As I've said hundreds of times before, ND is a middle-of-the-pack squad in any major conference this year. You can only begin to imagine how big my smile was when Robert Smith said the Irish have been badly overrated thus contributing to their bowl ineptitude following the 41-14 debacle on national TV tonight.
They haven't defeated a top 10 team since pre-Bob Davie and they have lost 9 (and counting) straight bowl games - but it is in the be$t intere$t of the NCAA that Notre Dame be showcased.

Outside of the few folks in WI and MN who have the NFL network, who's going to see them? I suspect most folks who want to watch fb will tune in the BYU-Oregon game. 8)
I get the NFL Network and would rather be watching BYU/Oregon...

I'd rank wrestling third, for sure. The Gophers are so darn good, though, so that helps to draw people in. Wrestling, in my high school at least, was about as popular as syphilis. I think other than family and good friends, no one ever came to watch us. Of course, our team sucked and that didn't help.
That would be pretty popular in some high schools

I attended the match - good wrestling for the most part - a few one-sided or sloppy contests. I agree that Conrad's match was somewhat of a yawn - especially since he was wrestling a freshman...but I don't want to be the one to tell him his performance was boring
Schlatter is an animal - I could at least run away from Conrad

Mike was going to be married to Tammy, so his father sat him down for a little fireside chat......
He says, "Mike, let me tell you something. On my wedding night in our honeymoon suite, I took off my pants and handed them to your mother and said, "Here try these on."
She did and said, "These are too big, I can't wear them." I replied, "exactly, I wear the pants in this family and I always will.
Ever since that night we have never had any problems.
"Hmmm," says Mike. He thinks that might be a good thing to try.
On his honeymoon, Mike takes off his pants and says to Tammy, "Here try these on." She does and says, "These are too large, they don't fit me.
Mike says, "Exactly. I wear the pants in this family and I always will, and I don't want you to ever forget that."
Then Tammy takes off her pants and hands them to Mike and says, "Here you try on mine." He does and says, "I can't get into them."
Tammy says, "Exactly. And, if you don't change your smart ass attitude, you never will."

Worse than any spanking was when my old man would let it bottle up for days and not say a word to you - my siblings and I still joke about the silent treatment.
A few years and a few grand kids later, he's a giant teddy bear.

Mighty Royal,
I don't know your age or how you were brought up. Being almost 50 and having raised 4 boys. The trouble does not lie with lawyers or cops. The trouble is with all the liberal crap. That poor mom can not use corporal punishment any more without being a child beater. I used it on my kids and I don't think they turned out badly. I have seen stories on here about the nuns, brothers, and priests in schools. I think that the mother did what she had to do to bring home a point to her kid. Her kid takes a swing at the school cop and gets kicked out of school. Seems to me he is a candidate for prison already. I think he needs a huge swift kick in the a$$.
Or a scholarship from the U of Miami football team....

Count me in favor of an eight-team playoff-- I'd rather see controversy over the eighth place team getting in and having to beat #1, #4 and #2 to win a title rather than a two-team playoff where # 3 doesn't have a chance to win the title. It makes it frustrating to be #9, for sure, but it's a lot easier being #9 and left out in the cold than #3 (who could have been #2, who knows). If you really want a championship, that's the way to go.
I didn't mind the old system-- having two national champions in the University division simply was a part of the fun and rivalry of college football. The BCS angers me because it is intended to crown a single champion and cannot do it effectively. That a coach can "lobby" or refuse to "lobby" is pretty weak if you ask me. Regardless of what I think about Florida, Lloyd Carr is a class act for staying out of the fray.
But the BCS conferences would never go for the eight-best-teams-in playoff (as the Big East representative would get shoved out by Wisconsin this year), or they could potentially have to share revenues with an eighth place MAC team (that's what would happen if the NCAA ran the playoffs.) So unless some revelation occurs, and the BCS presidents actually admit that football is more important than academics (which everyone at that level acts like but will not admit to), we're stuck with this system that will always be worth bad press.
Personally, I don't think an 8 team playoff is even necessary. Why not add just 1 more game that would pit the 2 winners of the top 2 bowls for a given year against each other? You could keep all of the existing bowls or even add an additonal bowl for just the Championship game. This year it'd be #1 OSU vs. #4 LSU and #2 Florida vs. #3 Michigan with the winners playing each other. My thought being that never under the current system or the past system has the #5 team had any legitamate gripe that they were the best team in the country. Just my $.02.
I like the idea but would like to see it expanded to 5 or 6 teams - with the #1 (5 team) or #1&2 (6 team) getting a bye for their great regular season. You would still play all the U of MN-type bowls for other teams, but this bowl series being the true grand daddy. I do agree with you that there is less noise coming from a #5 (or higher) ranked team missing out of a playoff opportunity than a team like Michigan this year.

I attended the Gopher/Arizona St basketball game with a fellow Cobber on Saturday. We received tickets through a friend of his who is in-tune with the athletic department. The seats were 2 rows behind the Gopher bench. My friend, with his 18 month old, was told we could move back a row as we'd have about 5 seats all to ourselves for the little guy to run around. I made the comment "I can't believe they don't fill seats this close to the bench for a Saturday game." We were then told by his inside source that they were the seats for Monson's wife and kids - I almost felt as if I was at a wake there for 2-3 seconds.
Thankfully the Gophers pulled one out. Blowing a 19 point 2nd half lead for the interim head coaching debut would have been a pretty low blow - even for a team with no expectations.
Feel good moment from Saturday. The PA announcer was doing the pre-game rant. As he announces who is in town, he pauses after saying Arizona State, covers the microphone, asks the guy next to him who their mascot is, and then comes back with a very bland "Sundevils"
