It's not Around the Nation but didn't know where else to put it.

In Triple Take at the end under 'They'll be on your radar'
QuoteRyan's take: Franklin. With a win this weekend, the Griz would be guaranteed to finish no worse than 7-1 in conference play, and they own the head-to-head victories over other potential one-loss teams. That means Franklin is poised to be the first team in 2014 to land a spot in the playoffs.
Would be nice... but Franklin has the week off. And with MSJ playing Bluffton, the winner will still be alive (albeit highly unlikely) for the conference crown.

Indeed, that was my mistake. I had put a note at the end of the blurb on Saturday when I noticed the error, but it was up far too long. Apologies.

Is there a team of the week for this past week? Last week's is still showing.

Just now seeing your note. I'm not sure what was up this morning when you posted, but the current TOW is up now:

Ryan,

Thanks for your "snap judgements" piece. I would only point out  the CCIW is one of 11 conferences that hasn't yet started conference play.  The "independents" like U Chicago and Wash U, etc also haven't started play against each other but that's not really a conference any more.

My apologies! Thanks for the catch, USee. I've updated it on the site.

Great column about Bryan Bing.

Isn't that story the real reason that we love D-3 football?

The leadership that Bryan is "living" will be his greatest achievement that came from playing football at Methodist.

Bryan was awesome to talk to: smart, eager, determined. What he overcame is a true #whyd3 story.

If you haven't seen the front page, the handoff from Keith is now complete and my first Around the Nation column has been posted:

I will do my best to respond to any questions and comments, and I encourage any discussion related to ATN or the national scene in D-III to take place here. I look forward to hearing from folks and to bringing D-III to your digital doorsteps!

Wally

I'll make the trip next week to watch Tigers as I've got blood playing. Hope the game lives up to the hype. Most important question is "Where is Tailgate and when does it start" ?

There will be copious tailgating in and around both of the parking lots just outside of the stadium- one on either side of the railroad tracks because this is D3 and of course there are railroad tracks.  When?  Early.

Wabash is also planning to host an open tailgate for fans of both schools. I don't know exactly where it'll be located, but I'm sure it'll be well-marked and in a fairly central area.

Emory and Henry shirt in Cleveland

With the longtime Don Montgomery pipeline, there's a few folks I can think of who would sport that shirt in northern Ohio. :)

An SUV in downtown Roanoke, Virginia, had a sticker that said "University of Redlands grandparent."

It's a long ways between Virginia and California.

"....full of D1 players that couldn't cut it....."

Their HS coach is an idiot.

True, that coach has his head in the sand, but I took the comment to mean more academically than athletically. Virginia's public D1s are different caliber academically than those in most other places. Not at all excusing what that coach said but just giving some context, for better or worse.

There's a reason we didn't retweet that story.

Thanks for keeping me in the loop........

I put this out over Twitter yesterday but should've posted it here, too.

Roanoke-area football players commit to Mount Union

Stagg Bowl visibility undoubtedly helped.

Reports coming in from Crawfordsville that our friends to the South attempted to steal The Bell last night. Apparently about a dozen or so Dannies made the trip from Greencastle, came across some sleeping TKEs and made the grab, only to be thwarted by the pledges of Sigma Chi.

Congrats to the Wabash Men for successfully defending our prize, and to the Dannies for making an attempt to steal. I'm surprised they even knew what it looked like!

Asleep at the Bell?!  Oh no no no no.  I know those freshmen are plenty sleep deprived as is, but we gotta do better fellas.

Ah, no, see...it was a TRAP!

Here's a post describing the attempted heist that was relayed through my fraternity's alumni Facebook page:
"At 4:30 am about 3 vehicles filled with dannies came and parked by the football field. We had 3 TKE's guarding the bell and a couple of Sig Chi's and TKE's in the chapel. There were about 6 dannies who pinned down our 3 TKE's and about 5 other dannies came to carry it away, but on hearing the yelling of the TKE's the guys inside the chapel came out and tackled to stop the dannies taking the bell. Which caused the bell fall and break the handle. After hearing this commotion Wabash Security came to the scene and chased the Dannies off campus in his Minivan. This is what I heard from one of the Sig Chi pledges that were in the chapel."

Trying to shed some more light on the tiebreaker. Here's the answer I got from the NCAC.
Me: Bret, I read the Crawfordsville paper's explanation of the tiebreaker, but wanted to double check on how it works. If the three tied teams are Witt, Wabash and Ohio Wesleyan, for example, would Wabash get the AQ because of its 2-0 record against those teams or would it go to the next tiebreaker because Witt and OWU didn't play?
Bret Billhardt: In that scenario we wouldn't use the head-to-head tiebreaker because it wouldn't be fair to apply that specific tiebreaker seeing that every team didn't play each other.

I'm not buying that reasoning. And I'm not surprised that Billhardt isn't terribly forth-coming.

I know everyone is saying that Witt would be the Pool A, and maybe that's just the beast of interpreting the selection criteria. Looking at it objectively, I don't see how the No. 1 criterium, h2h, doesn't apply here. Looking at it as listed in the Journal Review article, I see it as Wabash likely getting the AQ.

Kenyon is 0-1 against the tied teams, as is Witt. They're out based on h2h.
OWU is 1-1. Wabash is 2-0 against the teams in this group, meaning Wabash wins the AQ.

If we had to go deeper because Wabash didn't directly beat Kenyon, it may depend on how the OWU/Gheny game turns out, since they would be the next two teams in the "descending order." And Kenyon and Bash would each be 1-1 against them. If OWU wins this weekend, that means Wabash would win the AQ over Kenyon because OWU would be higher up the "descending order than Gheny, giving Wabash the edge with its win over OWU. If Gheny wins, criteria Nos. 4 or 5 might be needed, which would also give Wabash the edge.

This is just the way I'm interpreting the criteria. I very possibly could be reading it wrong. But we're all apparently looking at it with our own little nuances.
