Interesting regional rankings taken from KnightSlappy's Calvin bball blog that were published on 12/6.  Hope is 2nd in the region but has more overall losses than any other team in the top-9 of the region.  Only other MIAA team to come in is Trine registering at #9.

These rankings are based only on regional games, so it counts Hope as 1-0.

sounds like Jackson from Trine had a pair of warm ones last weekend.  Are they sneaking in under the radar, or not playing solid competition yet

Dunno how to answer that. The OWP of Trine and the other seven MIAA teams is charted below, but the problem is that the sample size is small (only 5-to-8 games played apiece by the league's teams) and there's more variation among the opponents in terms of affiliation than you see in other D3 leagues, because the MIAA plays so many more games against non-D3 competition than is the norm.

team  W-L (pct)  OWP
Trine  6-1 (.857)  .459
Olivet  5-2 (.714)  .404
Adrian  3-3 (.500)  .467
Albion  2-3 (.400)  .517
Alma  2-3 (.400)  .244
Hope  2-3 (.400)  .756
Calvin  3-5 (.375)  .754
Kalamazoo  0-5 (.000)  .542

The interesting thing, of course, is how playing the likes of Cornerstone, Grace Bible, and Davenport has really boosted the OWP of Hope and Calvin.

According to Massey (D3 rank):

18 -- Hope
30 -- Calvin
36 -- Olivet
83 -- Trine
132 -- Albion
203 -- Adrian
227 -- Alma
300 -- Kalamazoo

He says they're pretty good. Not Hope, Calvin, or Olivet, but pretty good.

Having eyeballed Hope, Calvin, and Trine within a 24-hour window, I can vouch that -- at this point, at least -- Trine is within hailing distance of the two traditional MIAA powers. But I saw only one game apiece, and we have to keep in mind that this is early December. I have no guarantees to make regarding how the MIAA will all play out once January and February roll around. All I know is that the Thunder impressed me (Mr. Jackson in particular, of course).

Trine's Ian Jackson made an impression on at least one CCIW poster.

.....  If you were in the gym on Saturday night, or had the chance to watch on line, you know that the performance Ian Jackson put on cannot simply be defined by his 33 points (as impressive a number as that is).  There was a stretch of about 8 minutes there (during which NP pretty much lost the game) that Jackson was absolutely unstoppable.  I do not think it was a matter of lacking defense....Jackson was just unconcious.  I actually enjoyed watching it, even though it was at my own team's expense.  Easily one of the best individual performances I have seen in the North Park gym in a long time.

As a side note, kudos to the Trine fans.  Impressive road turnout for a team that's not right down the road.

Ian Jackson impressed the heck out of me, too. Once he got in the zone, there was nothing North Park could do to defend him. He had a couple moments in the first half as well, but in the second half he was locked in.

He didn't get much rest in the second half either -- Harmon took him out at one point but a Trine player fouled out about 30 seconds later and Jackson went back in, still looking winded. On one of the possessions immediately following, Jackson had one of his best buckets of the game.

is "getting in the zone" comparable to "having the hot hand"?

Grand Valley 79
Olivet 45

I thought Olivet would be more competitive.

Michigan   86
Concordia 65

U of M only led by 7 midway through the second half before pulling away from a bottom half WHAC squad. I thought the Wolverines would be more competitive.

GVSU 79 Olivet 45

If I had a guess, its that GVSU remembered that Olivet had last years game tied with 5 minutes to go and the Lakers weren't going to let that happen again.

McClary 19 pts, 8 rebs. Nathan Jennings 12.   Olivet really struggled to shoot the ball, I'm sure the 27% they shot tonight is a season low.

Kalamazoo 83 Oberlin 62

Kzoo gets its first win of the season and picks up another in-region win for the league.  Oberlin isn't good and look to be heading for rock bottom of the NCAC, Kzoo just needed a win of any kind and its good to see them dominate a team they really should.

Joe Prepolec 23, Joe Wilson 21, Jeff Hollenbeck 13

Also, Lamont Simpson was one of the officials for the Michigan/Concordia game.

Any speculation on why GVSU is playing Olivet, but has not recently played Calvin or Hope?  GVSU's decision or does that come from Calvin and Hope?

I'm not sure.
But I'm now inclined to blame it on Haverdink. ::)

When I finally showed up for work yesterday afternoon I was met with a Hollywood generated obstacle course comprised of carts loaded with electronic equipment, cameras and supplies, closed streets, and miles of cable to avoid. When I reached my desk Bruce Willis and 50 Cent were filming below my feet--I mean literally below my feet in the restaurant downstairs--and I spent a portion of my afternoon watching 50 Cent chase a putative bank robber from my building into a door across the street from where I work. I thought I had wasted my day until I read how much board time was devoted to the relative merits of Brian Haverdink's playing time. At least I was educated by my eye-rolling receptionist that 50 Cent is actually pronounced "Fitty sen." Apparently I am so 20th Century.

Well, losing to then-#18 Carthage by 1 point at Carthage and beating then-#21 Wheaton by 6 netted Hope a total of two more vote points in the d3hoops.com top 25 poll. They're now RV (T#40) with a total of 3 vote points.

Despite the close games vs. Hope and Calvin at home, Carthage lost only one place, to #19. Wheaton dropped out of the top 25 and is now RV (T #31).

By the way, Hope and Calvin still have the #2 and #3 most difficult schedules played so far, according to Massey.

Michigan hoops fans (except for me) are pointing to michigan state's loss to grand valley as a way to soften the blow of last night's unexpected competitive game with Concordia. Cleary they do not realize what the expected result would be if GV took on Concordia.

By most definitions, yes.
