Look for UW-Platteville to win a WIAC championship this year! They just got in a new freshman girl who is supposed to have some stellar talent and plays straight, no nonsense, technically sound basketball. I'm calling it!

WARHAWKS point guard Kaityn Thill was named an honorable mention D3Hoops.com preseason All American.  Thill was the only WIAC player named.

The WARHAWKS opened the season with a convincing 107-61 win over St Marys College (In) in the Saint Norbert Tip Off semifinal.  Starting the game with an 11-0 run in the game's first two minutes the WARHAWKS pushed the lead to thirty, 52-22, at the half.  The lead grew to a game high of forty seven, 95-48, with six minutes remaining.  The WARHAWKS shot 49% from the floor including ten three-pointers.  The defense created 32 turnovers which included 13 steals.  Kaitlyn Thill led the WARHAWKS with 24 points and game highs of 8 assists and 5 steals.  Mary Merg added 16 points and had 4 steals.  Amy Mandrell dropped 15 points and a game high 7 rebounds.  Abby Reeves rounded out the double figure scorers with 10 points.  A 53-33 advantage on the boards led the WARHAWKS 44-34 advantage in points in the paint and a 24-11 advantage in second chance points.  The WARHAWKS outscored St Marys 46-19 off of turnovers.

The WARHAWKS met Saint Norberts in the championship game and got win number two 72-61.  The WARHAWKS started the game with a 10-3 in the first three minutes and the lead grew to a game high of nineteen, 34-15, with three minutes remaining in the half.  Saint Norberts pulled to within fourteen, 36-22, when the half ended.  Saint Norbert pulled to eight early in the second half and five, 52-47, with seven minutes remaining but that's as close as it would get.  The defense forced twenty five turnovers which led to a 31-8 scoring advantage in points off of them.  Amy Mandrell finished with game highs of 16 points and 9  rebounds.  Katie Burton finished with 15 points and 7 rebounds.  Abbie Reeves added 14 points and Kaitlyn Thill had a game high 8 steals.

The WARHAWKS ran the winning streak to three games with a 90-76 win over the University of Chicago.  Though they scored the game's first five points the WARHAWKS trailed 25-20 after nine and half minutes.  A 7-0 run gave the WARHAWKS the lead and they led 39-35 at the half.  Scoring 15 points off of 16 turnovers help the WARHAWKS get the lead.  Mary Merg led all scorers with 12 points while Amy Mandrell added 10 and 8 rebounds.  UC scored the first four points of the second half to tie but the WARHAWKS responded with a 16-4 run to take a double digit lead 55-43.  Chicago would get to within four, 59-54, with eleven minutes to play but once again the WARHAWKS would quickly make a run and regain the double digit lead which reached a high of seventeen.  Chicago closed  to within nine points twice around the seven minute mark but that's as close as it would get.

Mandrell finished with a team high 24 points and a game high 14 rebounds.  Kaitlyn Thill added 18 points and game highs of 7 assists and 7 steals.  Merg finished with 17 points and added 4 steals.  Abbie Reeves and Rilley Stewart also scored in double figures with 15 and 11 points respectively.

WARHAWKS: 91
Edgewood=71

The WARHAWKS never trailed in the game and led by ten 48-38 at the half.  Edgewood would get no closer than twelve points in the second half as the WARHAWKS lead reach a high of twenty-four 91-67 before Edgewood scored the game's final four points.

Amy Mandrell finished with a game high 18 points.  Mary Merg added 16 points.   Katie Burton had 16 points while Abbey Reeves and Rilley Stewart each scored 13 points.  Mandrell also had a game high 7 rebounds.  Kaitlyn Thill had a game high 6 assists and 5 steals.

WHITEWATER: 96
Illinois Wesleyan: 79

Behind 61% first half shooting the WARHAWKS jumped to a sixteen point halftime lead, 52-36, and cruised to the win.  IWU got to within nine points in the second half but the WARHAWKS responded and rebuilt the lead to a high of twenty-four points.  The WARHAWKS finished the game shooting 56%.  It was a sloppy affair as the full court pressure defense employed by both teams led to a lot of turnovers and free throws.   The two teams combined for 54 turnovers resulting in a combined 76 points off of turnovers and shot a combined 50 free throws.

Mary Merg led six WARHAWKS in double figures with 19 points.  Katie Burton hit 3 three pointers and finish with 15 points.  Amy Mandrell continued to add offense with 13 points.  Kaitlyn Thill, Abbie Reeves and Andrea Olson scored 12 points apiece.   Merg added a game high 7 assists and Thill had a game high 6 steals and a team leading 6 rebounds.

It was a good win against an opponent, though not as strong as previous years, is still a top tier program.

Stout Video Screens. Some Bozo at Stout put video screens up in opposite corners of the court at Stout. Not only do they total ruin the game for spectators but they are absolutely a total dstraction  to players. They broadcast the game live on these. Effectively, these sit up in the right corners as you dribble up to your basket, I have never seen the likes of it, WIAC COACHES beware - they will really through your team for a loop. It is like having extra players on the court - they are literally huge and right on the court - can someone check in on this. I am baffled - they absolutely distract the audience for the game and are a total distraction to players. Please report if you know about these or have seen them. It is absolutely ridiculus

Are they showing replays, or doing promotional activities on them? If they are just showing live action there's really no point in an ordinary sized gym. It's not like sitting at the top of Madison Square Garden.

Some replays at half but I tell you, these screens must go. They interfere with the game big time. I'm sure that the woman's whitewater coach and S. Point coach will ask for them to be turned off. BADGERHAWK -look into this one. See what you can figure. Could be why Superior lost tonight - these things are really bad news - if your guard brings the ball up and looks to pass right - they will be totally distracted. It is like a movie screen in the middle of the movie screen - you go to the movies to watch a flick and in the middle of the screen they are showing the same movie in a slower out of focus version. Stout folks - where is your head at?

So they sit on the floor?  Our men are there Saturday so we'll see where that goes.

Those screens don't do much for me either, but the reason that Superior lost?  I hope you are kidding!  And I'm sure if any coach comes in and asks for them to be turned off, I'm sure our AD will jump right on that.  And for the record, JMM, in an earlier post you referred to "some Bozo at Stout".  After rereading that post you would have a hard time convincing me that there is a "Bozo" at Stout.  I would suggest that the "Bozo" title probably fits the guy that would make a post like that in the first place.

Roundball999

Can't speak for the screens at Stout, but I'm generally not a fan of these things at hoops games.  Some of it depends on where they're located - end walls is worse than overhead IMO - and some depends on how they're used.  Was not a fan at WLC of the very long home team player intros caused by review of program history, 1000 pt scorers, etc but could see how home fans might appreciate that more.  Pregame and half time ads are a downer too.  But while I really don't like these things at games, I find it hard to think it would impact game outcome.

BDB

The video screens are 40-50 feet in the air and have no effect on the outcome of a game played there. Johnson Fieldhouse is a large, open facility and the screens help warm it up if anything. I like them.

Hey, maybe the screens on the football scoreboards should be turned off too. BW, make sure that happens next time we are down there. I'm sure you agree that that video board effects the outcome of games in Whitewater.  :P   ;)

Blue Devil Bob - have you stood on the floor at the same level of the players during a game, The screens are absolutely a distraction. Looks like a very bad attempt to add technology where it is not needed. They absolutely are a distraction to player and and spectator. The picture quality is pathetic and out of synch - go take a look. If you want them to warm up the field house arena - leave the screens off during he game. Use them for half time recap. My two cents.
