I think the words I was looking for was that this behavior is unacceptable

The behavior is completely wrong and should be addressed accordingly, whether it is at Amherst College or any other institution of higher learning.  There is no room for it whether you are a man or woman, or regardless of the sex of your children.

Having said that, I find it absurd that Amherst has to hire an ex-Justice to conduct an investigation and make that so publicly known.   Deal with it decisively, clearly, and expeditiously as an institution, but why be so public - as Biddy Martin has been - in hiring such a high profile individual to deal with it?   The reason, of course, is that Amherst remains gunshy after the rape allegations of many years ago.   However, I am tired of reading about my alma mater in the news.   I completely respect that these things happen but enough is enough.

JEFFFAN,

I, and several of my amHerst friends, agree entirely with you. They don't recall a small enterprise receiving as much poor national publicity in recent years. In my own case, it resulted in no checks (non-alum) from me a while back.

There is an old saying, "Tell your own bad news, tell it first, and tell it all."

Excuse me if I missed this part of the discussion, but I was a little surprised to see no comments on the release of the 588 unique mascot ideas that were submitted to Amherst: https://www.amherst.edu/amherst-story/mascot/mascot-suggestions

Or, maybe you guys are just tired of talking about it...

The list with the rationale is worth reading...

My favorite must be the Amherst Fighting Microaggressions though Lord Zeph, Cider Donuts and Social Justice Warriors are all quite clever.

Don't look now, but Jayde Dawson might be having an Allen Williamson moment - by which I mean his three point shot might have finally clicked, forcing defenders to guard him more closely and making his ability to get to the rim an offensive force to be reckoned with.

He's averaging 18 points a contest while playing only 23 mpg and shooting at a 44% clip from beyond the arc. If he even remotely keeps this up, Hixon needs to find a way to keep him in the game for 30+ minutes.

I really like that multiple people recommended either dogs in general (see, e.g. "good dog", stated rationale - "everyone loves a good dog") or their own family dogs in particular (see, e.g. "Garvin", stated rationale - "The obvious and perfect mascot for you is a large white and tan dog named Garvin with thick soft fur who lives in the mountains of New Mexico. You can see him in my icons. He is delightful, with great character, quite powerful, yet very gentle. The teams that used him would be nicknamed the Garvins. Funny, yet secure and completely value neutral. Also, he is very handsome and loyal.")

A few from the Amherst list that I predict will make the final 30, I bet at LEAST half of these make it to the final cut.  And Frost or Purple Frost will be the winner, I'd bet.

Aardvarks
Argonauts
Comets
Dire Wolves
Dragon Hawks
Frost
Gryphon
Horned Owl / Owl
Mammoths
Mastodons
Moose
Pioneers
Frost / Purple Frost
Purple Haze
Purple Storm
River Otters
Werewolves

Zephs won't make it, but is genius, and would have the benefit of confusing even more spectators new to the Amherst-Williams rivalry.

Couple of comments wrt posts.
Lefrankenstein...nice to hear your "voice" here this season.  Plus K for a post on basketball.  I would agreed with you on the matter of Dawson if his role was as a shooing guard only.
WUH...the Mascot topic for me is one that is a waste of time and energy in an open forum on this board.  I will now make two final comments.  First, at Homecoming, I was told by an alum who was on the selection committee of the Mascot that the key rule/condition  for a choice is Lord Jeff is NOT a choice!  As I posted earlier....waste of time..the process is "rigged" to use a present overused word.
Second, I had been giving money to Amherst for over 50 years, been an associate Class Agent for forty or more years and the Class Agent for 6 years...over the 50 year Reunion period.  I am proud that my class gave several million dollars over our set goal for the 50th.  I resigned as the Class Agent over the Mascot matter.  I could not ask classmates to donate when I stopped giving.  When the present Prez is gone, I will resume.
Hopefully, this particular board will return to basketball topics.

Insiders report current favorites include hamster, moose. Outsiders favor plague with zephs an intriguing long shot ....

I hope that you're wrong about the Zephs not making it. That would be my choice. I would also be ok with Zephyrs, but prefer the plain Zephs, as it makes zero sense to outsiders. Perhaps Zephs could be the team name and a purple animal (moose, hamster, hawk) could be the mascot.

Heard it here first (which means absolutely nothing!) ... I believe that it will be the Amherst Pioneers.

amh63

JEFFAN....if so then there would be two Pioneers mascots in the Pioneer Vally....Smith being the other.   I had suggested to a staff friend who can vote and may have submitted it, the mascot name Missionaries, to reflect the school's motto in part.
Now a BB topic.  The Amherst Lord Jeffs will play Springfield tonight in Springfield, the place where basketball came to be.
It should be an interesting game in that Williams played them most recently with a young and talented team.  I would like to see Coach Hixon put a young and talented group of Amherst players on the floor asap for experience and evaluation purposes.  Starters can return if the game when and if needed.

I did not know we had a XC team
Choosing between Olson and Toomey is like choosing betweeen a chrome-colored ferrari and a silver-colored ferrari
2007 had more depth, athleticism is a tie, and 2013 had a more efficient starting five

I wish I had posted "Amherst always has trouble with Springfield" back when it would've been prescient, because I've been thinking it all day.

Good try.  Springfield wins by one after valiant comeback.

Down goes Liston! The plague loses to a determined and hustling Springfield team by 1 by defaulting to selfish individual outside play. Somehow Springfield earns half (36) of their 71 points in the paint, 50% more than the plague (24) despite a significant size disadvantage.
Clearly the plague did not come ready to play, or execute a game plan that should have been obvious from watching the Ephs easy win last Saturday on the same court.

That's why they play the games ....and it's Division III.
