With the news that Ken Thomas has transferred to North Central (https://twitter.com/nccmbb/status/1700242013981962599?s=46&t=MhKpneCgs0ubvAHyG-LcxQ), I decided to review last years All MIAA honorees.

2023 Men's Basketball All-MIAA First Team
Brent Cox, Trine - graduated
Uchenna Egekeze, Calvin - returning
Connor Jones, Trine - graduated
Jalen Overway, Calvin - returning
De'Ovion Price, Adrian - transferred to Marietta
Evan Thomas, Hope  - graduated

2023 Men's Basketball All-MIAA Second Team
Josh Decker, Kalamazoo - transferred to Hope
Clayton Dykhouse, Hope - returning
Fred Garland, Albion - transferred to Trine
Emmanuel Megnanglo, Trine - returning
Gabe Quillan, Hope - returning
Ken Thomas, Albion - transferred to North Central

So of the 12 honorees:  3 graduates, 5 returning, and 4 transfers

The previous 5 seasons, the average has been 6 graduates and 6 returning, with only 1 transfer (Jordan Harris)

Brent Cox is returning as a 5th year graduate student, taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted due to Covid.

Trine started practice over the weekend and posted a clip on Twitter. Brent Cox can indeed be seen.

With  many teams starting practice this month, I'm hoping we'll get official rosters sooner than usual!

Which 1st-years would you (or anyone else here) think have a chance to play with the varsity this season?  Is there a clear two or three-to-five possibles?

Given all the returning talent at Calvin, not many freshmen have much of a chance at playing this year. Not so, however, with Jordan Scott, a 6'4" guard from Plymouth Christian. It's quite likely we're going to see a lot of this kid during the 2023-24 season.

There is also that high school D1 all state recruit last year who was injured all year. Might he too be competing for some minutes?

I believe Brady Ewing will be in the mix for playing time, yes.

By my quick guess, there are probably 13 players vying for regular playing time. Coach Sall has typically played only 8-9 guys per game.

Ambrose, Bult, Egekeze, Ewing, Harvey, J. Overway, V. Overway, Ressler, Riemersma, Scott, Lo. Van Essen, Varnado, T. Winkle.

This list could expand once they hit the court and compete in practice.

I am so ready for basketball season.  I too check every day to see if Trine has their roster posted.  Something new for Trine this year is on their 'X' page they are revealing the returning roster individually every couple days.  I am hoping they include the newcomers too.

This year the MIAA should be pretty easy to predict;  Calvin, Hope and Trine in dogfight, then everyone else.  All 3 of these teams are going to pretty special I think this year.  Would really like to see 3 from the MIAA in the dance, especially Trine for the 1st time in their D3 history.  They should have plenty of experience: Cox, Megnanglo, Smylie, Pahl, Preston, Awls, Tucker, all with extensive PT last year, McKenzie got more PT towards the end of the year.  Add in transfers Garland and Moore who gives us some offensive punch.  A few freshmen may be in the mix, the 2 Ohio kids, Wypasek and Richardson might help, and maybe one of the Michigan kids like Cusack.  I don't forsee Jannsen returning but I could be wrong, just haven't seen him at any of the basketball camps on campus this summer.  And in some years there is usually a 'surprise' kid on the roster for Trine that no one knows about, maybe this season?  This year, more than any in recent memory, is going to be tough for any underclassmen to get into the playing rotation.

...I think I spy one of the 'surprises' on the roster...hint...could be an 'all in the family' addition... ;D

I don't see the roster, and I had no idea...but I'm going to be really disappointed, aren't I?

Obviously, I realized this was "possible," thanks to COVID, but I didn't see this coming.

If I can lift the veil here, Cortez Garland is apparently using his COVID year now after not playing last year and is joining Fred at Trine.

Looking like Trine will be very good.

Bingo!  It appears that Cortez Garland indeed will be on the Trine roster this season.  I did see something on Cortez's X (Twitter) account a few months ago that was re-tweeted on the Trine MBB account, but didn't put two and two together until I saw a photo of Cortez, Brent Cox and Ryan Preston participating in a student Read A Thon celebration at one of Angola's elementary schools.  My first thought this past summer was that Cortez was going to go to grad school at Trine and was going to be a student assistant coach, had no idea he had basketball playing eligibility remaining.  There is also a short clip of practice on the Trine Thuder MBB X account, and if you slow down the video frame by frame there is one spot where you can catch both Fred and Cortez on the court together (I beleive they were the only guys wearing warm up pants).

Who boy that game up in Albion January 13th is going to be heated!!  I might have to make the short trip up there for that one.

23-24 MBB roster is now up for Trine:

https://trinethunder.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/roster

It has been confirmed that both Garland brothers are enrolled at Trine.  The other surprise on the roster is that Hayden Jones is back.  He was on the roster 2 years ago as a freshman, got a fair amount of minutes early in the season, even started a few games, then minutes decreased as season went on.  Not sure of his whereabouts last year.  Only one Fr on Varsity, Jayce Cusack from Lakewood HS MI.  That shows you how deep this team will be as most years there are 4-5 freshmen on varsity.  I wish Trine posted a JV roster to confirm the other guys are enrolled.

Good for Cortez for finding a way to play another year and for both for getting another year together.

Is the COVID year rule allowing 4 playing years (not counting 20-21) in 6 time years?  I think I'm past having to worry that Jamezell is going to show up on Trine's roster, right?

Trine and Calvin have put together very good rosters that Hope can beat again in the MIAA Tournament.  ;)

Per the Adrian Athletics website and twitter account, the MIAA game between Adrian and Trine on January 28th will be played at Little Caesers Arena as part of the AC Night with the Detroit Pistons:

I believe the rule (before COVID through a wrench into everything) was 4 seasons of eligibility to use in 5 years of enrollment. The clock paused if a student is not enrolled. I believe Jamezell Davis played three seasons at Albion (didn't play the COVID half year), so as long as he didn't stay in school for 2 more years, he is probably eligible to join Trine's team this season  ;D.

I only attended Calvin for 4 years so I believe I could play 1 year of college basketball, but so far Coach Sall has not dialed my number  :'(.
